Found-Footage Horror and the Frame's Undoing
This essay finds in the found-footage horror cycle an alternative way of understanding the relationship between horror films and reality, which is usually discussed in terms of allegory. I propose the investigation of framing, understood both figuratively (framing the film as documentary) and stylistically (the framing in handheld cameras and in static long takes), as a device that playfully de-stabilizes the separation between the film and the surrounding world. The essay’s main case study is the Paranormal Activity franchise, but examples are drawn from a variety of films
MWCNT as mechanical support during ball milling of an AB5 alloy used as negative electrode of a Ni-MH battery
The La0.8Cm0.2Ni3.8Co0.3Al0.4 (AB5) (Cm: Cerium rich misch metal) alloy was mechanically mixed with carbon nanotubes at four different time periods, in order to study The effect on The mechanical milling and The electrochemical performance of The negative electrode of a Ni-MH battery. The microstructure and size particle during processing was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The morphology, examined by scanning electron microscopy, showed that The surface of The AB5 alloy was modified by carbon nanotubes. The electrochemical properties of The obtained materials were measured and discussed.Fil: Benavides Castillo, Lisbeth Alexandra. Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica. Unemployment protection reforms in Southern European countries between 2004 and 2016 and the trade-off between efficiency and equity
Efficiency and equity are the two core objectives of unemployment protection schemes. Substantial academic production has focused on theoretically discussing the adverse effects of unemployment benefits as well as their empirical validation. However, the evaluations made of unemployment protection reforms, implemented in every European country, have not as a rule been based on these two state intervention objectives. Hence, this constitutes the main purpose of this article. To this end, we subjected the reform measures undertaken in four southern European countries between 2004 and 2016 to analysis. Three different profiles were identified: the Italian reforms improved both efficiency and equity; Portugal and Spain returned an opposite profile while in Greece, an improvement in efficiency was counterbalanced by a negative impact on equity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Hypercalcemia in renal transplant patient with Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia
Pneumoncystis jirovecii (PJP) is an opportunistic infection that can occur in immunosuppressed patients, including those with renal transplant. We present the case of a 63-year old male with autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease with renal transplant on immunosuppressive therapy who presented with cough and exertional dyspnea. He was hypoxic with coarse breath sounds bilaterally. CT chest revealed ground-glass opacities with increased interstitial markings of the left lung. Labs were significant for hypercalcemia with ionized calcium 1.53 mmol/L, parathyroid hormone 97 pg/mL, 25-hydroxy vitamin D level 30 ng/mL and increased 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D to 156 pg/mL. He was started on intravenous normal saline, furosemide and calcitonin, however, he remained hypercalcemic. Endocrinology evaluated him and he was started on ketoconazole and received one dose of denosumab, with no improvement in calcium levels. Bronchiolar lavage cultures obtained from bronchoscopy were positive for PJP. He was started on intravenous steroids, clindamycin and primaquine due to acute kidney injury, precluding the use of Bactrim. His calcium levels improved with treatment of PJP, and he was discharged home. This case illustrates the potential for renal transplant recipients who develop PJP to develop hypercalcemia. Although the mechanism is not fully understood, it is thought to be secondary to an increase in 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D, possibly related to a granulomatous reaction against PJP. Patients with PJP may have hypercalcemia that improves with treatment, as was seen in this patient. It is important to consider PJP as the etiology of unexplained hypercalcemia in renal transplant patients.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2020caserpt/1113/thumbnail.jp
