    "Gesund durch Bewegung" versus "Schön durch Sport": Appearance-Framing von Gesundheitsbotschaften in der Bewegungsförderung

    Die positiven psychischen Effekte von Bewegung treten am ehesten dann auf, wenn gesundheitliche Aspekte das stĂ€rkste Motiv darstellen. Gleichzeitig lassen sich diese Effekte jedoch am seltensten bei jungen Frauen beobachten. Eine mögliche ErklĂ€rung liegt in der erhöhten Relevanz der AttraktivitĂ€t als Motiv zur sportlichen BetĂ€tigung unter Frauen, wobei die Gesundheitsförderung selbst dann in den Hintergrund rĂŒckt. Der vorliegende Beitrag fasst den aktuellen Stand der Forschung zu diesem Zusammenhang zusammen. Es werden insbesondere die VerknĂŒpfung von Gesundheit und AttraktivitĂ€t sowie die Verwendung von Appearance-Frames in der Bewegungsförderung thematisiert und beispielhaft auf deren Einsatz ab der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts eingegangen. Dabei werden zunĂ€chst die gelĂ€ufigsten Motive von Bewegung sowie mögliche Folgen dargestellt, wobei zum VerstĂ€ndnis die Objektifizierungstheorie von Fredrickson und Roberts (1997) herangezogen wird. Die Erkenntnisse zur Kommunikation in diesem Kontext deuten insgesamt darauf hin, dass das Framing der Bewegungsförderung Einfluss auf ihre Auswirkungen nehmen kann.The positive psychological effects of exercise are most likely to occur when health aspects are the strongest motivation. However, these effects are most rarely observed in young women. One possible explanation can be found in the increased relevance of attractiveness for females, whereby health itself is not always recognized as a positive outcome of exercise. This article summarizes the current state of research on this connection and in particular on the use of the most common frames in promoting physical exercise. First, the most common motivation for exercise and their possible consequences are discussed. Furthermore, the gender-specific differences with a focus on beauty are explained. For a better understanding, the objectification theory of Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) is used. Lastly, after the communication part has been dealt with, implications for practice are derived

    Background: Climate change is a paramount global health threat with multifaceted health implications. Societal change is required to mitigate the negative effects of climate change, as well as help people adapt to the associated health risks. This requires situation-specific, large-scale data that can help identify the relevant areas for policymaking and communication. Such behavioral data can help scientists and policymakers understand public perceptions and behaviors, as well as identify the levers to increase public readiness to act (RTA) against climate change and protect their health. The Planetary Health Action Survey (PACE) explores RTA, integrating individual behavior, policy acceptance, and political participation as its key indicators and determinants. The survey seeks to develop and refine an integrated conceptual model of RTA, create valid corresponding measurement instruments, and implement them in monitoring. This contribution serves as the study protocol for PACE. Methods: In cross-sectional data collections, a comprehensive set of sociocognitive factors, including climate change knowledge, trust in institutions, perceived health risks, self-efficacy, social norms, and perceived effectiveness of policy measures, are assessed. The online questionnaire is updated regularly and involves a nonprobabilistic quota sample from the German population (N ≈ 1,000 at each data collection). Discussion: PACE contributes to a comprehensive understanding of tackling climate change and related health risks by considering the different facets relevant to societal change. In addition, it allows for observing changes over time and adjustments to the model, as well as including current topics and debates. It provides a broad foundation for future health and crisis communication. PACE contributes to informing climate change and health communication, policymaking, and interventions by providing insights into the multidimensional factors influencing RTA against climate change

    Segmenting the German public for targeted communication about climate change and health along different indicators of the readiness to act against climate change

    Introduction: To mitigate the global health threat posed by climate change, multifaceted responses are required. As shown in previous work, older, male, and highly educated individuals exhibit greater general readiness to act against climate change; the same is true of people living in larger communities. The present study investigates the relationships between the indicators (facets) of the readiness to act against climate change—namely individual climate-friendly behavior, acceptance of climate-protection policies, and political participation—and relevant sociodemographic factors. Methods: Data from four waves (2022–2023) of the Planetary Health Action Survey (PACE) were analyzed (N = 3,830, nonprobabilistic representative German sample). Sociodemographic variables (e.g., gender, age, and education) and the three abovementioned facets of the readiness to act against climate change were assessed to examine their relationships. Results: Women and older individuals exhibited more climate-friendly behavior and policy acceptance. Political participation showed the opposite trend. Higher education was linked to less sustainable behavior, greater policy acceptance, and higher participation, while municipality size was only linked to the latter two. Additional analyses explore the relations between age and the constructs at the item level. Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of a nuanced understanding of people’s readiness to act against climate change. There is a need for tailored communication strategies in climate action that consider communication objectives along with audience characteristics. Different target groups may be relevant when campaigners want to increase political participation rather than change individual behaviors. As older individuals exhibit greater readiness to act in some respects, it is important to include young people in climate-communication efforts

    Kommunikation zu Klimawandel und Gesundheit fĂŒr spezifische Zielgruppen

    Hintergrund: Der Sachstandsbericht Klima und Gesundheit hat zahlreiche Gesundheitsrisiken aufgezeigt, die durch den Klimawandel entstehen oder verstĂ€rkt werden. Eine Handlungsempfehlung ist, zielgruppenspezifisch ĂŒber Risiken zu informieren. Dieser Artikel soll hierfĂŒr als Handlungsgrundlage dienen. Methode: Auf Basis von vier Erhebungen (2022/23) der pace-studie.de (N = 3.845) wird der Stand der Risikowahrnehmung aufgezeigt und eine Zielgruppenanalyse durchgefĂŒhrt. Ergebnisse: Einige Gesundheitsrisiken durch die Klimakrise werden als vergleichsweise gering wahrgenommen (z. B. psychische Probleme). Personen mit einer grĂ¶ĂŸeren Risikowahrnehmung zeigen eine höhere Handlungsbereitschaft. Bei der Segmentierung der Zielgruppen basierend auf soziodemografischen Variablen zeigen sich jĂŒngere, MĂ€nner, Personen mit niedrigerer Bildung und in kleineren Gemeinden als relevante Zielgruppen, da sie eine geringere Handlungsbereitschaft haben. Ca. ein Drittel gab an, sich kaum oder gar nicht gezielt zu informieren. Die Mediennutzung unterscheidet sich zwischen verschiedenen Zielgruppen; Menschen mit geringerer Handlungsbereitschaft bspw. informieren sich ĂŒber alle Medientypen hinweg seltener. Schlussfolgerungen: Eine zielgruppenspezifische Kommunikation kann die Gesundheitsrisiken der Klimakrise verdeutlichen. In der Diskussion des Artikels werden ausfĂŒhrlich Implikationen existierender Literatur diskutiert, um Kommunikator*innen eine Handreichung zur effektiven Klimakommunikation anzubieten

    Modelling the readiness to act against climate change by integrating individual behaviour and system-level change

    Behavioural science in the climate change field has mainly focused on understanding and changing individual behaviours. However, effectively addressing the climate crisis requires broadening the focus on systemic change. This paper introduces a novel model that defines readiness to act against climate change by considering individual climate-protection behaviours along with acceptance of climate policies and political participation. The model undergoes rigorous validation by psychometrically evaluating measurement instruments and testing the explanatory power of a comprehensive set of predictors, including perceived health risks, trust in institutions, social norms, perceived efficacy of political measures, self-efficacy, and knowledge. Utilising latent modelling, we separate general variance in the readiness to act from specific variance in individual behaviour, policy acceptance, and political participation; estimate relations that most closely approximate true relations between constructs and illuminate complex behavioural patterns. This approach surpasses individualised perspectives on climate action and includes a behavioural perspective on system-level change

Methods: In cross-sectional data collections, a comprehensive set of sociocognitive factors, including climate change knowledge, trust in institutions, perceived health risks, self-efficacy, social norms, and perceived effectiveness of policy measures, are assessed. The online questionnaire is updated regularly and involves a nonprobabilistic quota sample from the German population (N ≈ 1,000 at each data collection). Discussion: PACE contributes to a comprehensive understanding of tackling climate change and related health risks by considering the different facets relevant to societal change. In addition, it allows for observing changes over time and adjustments to the model, as well as including current topics and debates. It provides a broad foundation for future health and crisis communication.
