The Ethical Character from Plato to James: Strict and Stable to Flexible

    Get PDF
In this paper I examine the historical direction taken in ethics in relation to one’s personality and character, from a stable and static view to one that incorporates movement and flexibility. I begin by examining Plato and Aristotle’s understandings of character, using such concepts as Virtue and the Good as abstract and static ideals towards which development should lead. I then briefly examine Augustine, Kant, and Mill’s theories of what defines an ethical character, showing that the strict view was applied to varied and even opposing views of the ethical. Finally, I examine three very different views, those of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and James, which view character development and ethics not as a process aiming towards a set goal, but defined and expressed moment to moment. The ethical character is flexibly determined, through choice and decision making, the expression of the will to power, and the focus on the concrete and existent

(The article deals with the causal dominants nominations studying in the far- and close-related languages in the etymological aspect. In the Dutch language there have been etymologically analysed such lexemes as: tegemoetkoming, doel, gevolg; in the Ukrainian language: підстава, умова, допуст / поступка, мета / ціль, висновок, наслідок, засіб; in the Russian language: основание, условие, уступка, цель, вывод, следствие, средство. The present study logically follows the previous research of the author devoted to nominations designating the causal dominants with the Latin stems (cause, reason, condition, concession, purpose, effect, conclusion, result, consequence, means in the English language; reden, conditie, concessie, effect, conclusie, resultaat, middel in the Dutch language; causa, razón, condición, concesión, fin / final, efecto, conclusión, result / resultado, consecuencia, medio in the Spanish language; ефект, результат in the Ukrainian language; эффект, результат in the Russian language), as well as the possible reconstruction of the archetype images of the causal dominants, reflected in the English, Dutch, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Russian languages speakers’ consciousness. The latter has been realized with the help of Proto-Italic and Proto-Indo-European languages protoforms. The major result of the article proposed lies in the probabilistic reconstruction of the studied dominants etymons which will enable the comparison of the causal archetype images in different ethnocultures in order to define common and specific features in the language pictures of ancient Germans, Romans, and Slavs.

Preliminary investigations concerning the treatment of dry carbonate rocks with some derivatives of silane in the vapor state are described. The treated rocks appear similar to affected aggregates observed in some inferior concretes

Pop-outs in Hematite Colored Concrete Floor

    Get PDF
Pop-outs found in a hematite colored basement floor subjected to wetting and drying action were attributed to shale introduced into the concrete as fine aggregate. The shale particles in pop-outs were characterized by clear gel rims associated with the alkali-silica reaction as well as red-brown hydrated iron oxide gel caused by oxidation of indigenous iron. Fresh shale particles from the same fine aggregate source used in the concrete under investigation were placed in sodium hydroxide which developed reaction zones characteristic of the concrete reaction and were interpreted as evidence supporting the instability of this material in alkaline environment. The hematite color which marked the original particle surfaces, indicated that reaction rims were developed entirely within the shale particle. Further study of the rim gel is needed to explain the pathway and interactions between the iron oxidation reactions and the alkali-silica reactions

Young Children’s Mobile Device Use in Public Places: Immersion, Distraction, and Co-Use

    Get PDF
Though prior research has examined how parents use mobile devices in public, we know less about children’s use of mobile devices outside the home. The present study therefore explores how children use mobile devices in public places they visit with their parents in order to conceptualize how device use affects children’s interactions with their parents and environments. We used naturalistic non-participant observational methods in three locations in the US: eateries, laundromats, and airports. We observed 77 families with at least one parent and one child estimated to be between 2-6 years old. The observers wrote detailed field notes that we analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. We found that children used mobile devices in 31% of the observed families. We categorized children’s behaviors under three themes: immersion, distraction, and co-use. Children were highly engaged with their parents and environment during co-use. However, when children asked for a device or were provided with a device that they used on their own, they were less engaged with parents and environments. Engagement levels between children and parents therefore corresponded with the circumstances of children’s device use and whether they used devices with their parents or in isolation from them. The themes we develop here may be applied to future qualitative and quantitative studies of children’s mobile device use in public and at home

The Transgressive Posture: Insights from Nano Discourse into the Ontology of Being a Transgressor

    Get PDF
Considering this trajectory of the uses (or should one rather speak of the abuses?) of transgression, we can identify a number of clusters. Broadly speaking, there is a tendency to either use transgression in a socio-political context (identifying practices which move beyond the permissible or social norms), locating transgression in cultural practices (the ways we interact with the world) and finally in aesthetic practices (moving beyond the norms and conventions created by the fiction of authority). If we begin with what is maybe the broadest application of transgression as ways of overreaching taboos, we find that Peter Lemish's article The Transgressive Posture signals precisely this notion of reaching across he acceptable social boundaries — of a very sensitive field: the Israel-Arab conflict and argues that only through a transgressive posture, which Lemish develops from Heidegger, can the playing field be levelled.&nbsp
