Validation of Phonon Physics in the CDMS Detector Monte Carlo
The SuperCDMS collaboration is a dark matter search effort aimed at detecting
the scattering of WIMP dark matter from nuclei in cryogenic germanium targets.
The CDMS Detector Monte Carlo (CDMS-DMC) is a simulation tool aimed at
achieving a deeper understanding of the performance of the SuperCDMS detectors
and aiding the dark matter search analysis. We present results from validation
of the phonon physics described in the CDMS-DMC and outline work towards
utilizing it in future WIMP search analyses.Comment: 6 Pages, 5 Figures, Proceedings of Low Temperature Detectors 14

Authority and moral reasons: parenting style and<br /> children’s perceptions of adult rule justifications
The style of parenting of 100 children (mean age 11 years, 5 months) was established according to Baumrind's typology. Children were asked to indicate what they thought an adult would say to justify a moral rule in five different scenarios. Results indicated that parenting style did not relate to the number of justifications that children thought adults would produce but did affect the types of justifications they thought adults would give. Children of authoritative parents thought that adults would use more justifications based on reciprocity or equality in social relations than children of authoritarian parents. The results suggest that children of authoritative parents do not perceive adults to offer a more discursive moral atmosphere than children of other parents do; rather these children are more likely than others to think that adults will justify moral rules specifically in terms of equality in social relations. An unexpected finding was that children of permissive parents tended to judge that adults would legitimise judgments by pointing to the consequences of action for other people
Comparison of CDMS [100] and [111] oriented germanium detectors
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) utilizes large mass, 3" diameter
1" thick target masses as particle detectors. The target is
instrumented with both phonon and ionization sensors and comparison of energy
in each channel provides event-by-event classification of electron and nuclear
recoils. Fiducial volume is determined by the ability to obtain good phonon and
ionization signal at a particular location. Due to electronic band structure in
germanium, electron mass is described by an anisotropic tensor with heavy mass
aligned along the symmetry axis defined by the [111] Miller index (L valley),
resulting in large lateral component to the transport. The spatial distribution
of electrons varies significantly for detectors which have their longitudinal
axis orientations described by either the [100] or [111] Miller indices.
Electric fields with large fringing component at high detector radius also
affect the spatial distribution of electrons and holes. Both effects are
studied in a 3 dimensional Monte Carlo and the impact on fiducial volume is
discussed.Comment: Low Temperature Detector 14 conference proceedings to be published in

Experimental inoculation of plants and animals with Ebola virus.
Thirty-three varieties of 24 species of plants and 19 species of vertebrates and invertebrates were experimentally inoculated with Ebola Zaire virus. Fruit and insectivorous bats supported replication and circulation of high titers of virus without necessarily becoming ill; deaths occurred only among bats that had not adapted to the diet fed in the laboratory
The mechanical performance of sugar palm fibres (Ijuk) reinforced phenolic composites
Sugar palm fibres are one of the natural fibres which have many features and need further study to understand their properties. The aim of this work is to investigate the flexural, compressive and impact properties of sugar palm fibres reinforced phenolic composites. Sugar palm fibres were used as a filler (particle size 150 μm) and with loading of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 vol.%. The fibres were treated by sea water and then fabricated into composites by hot press technique. Flexural, compressive, and impact tests were carried out as per ASTM D790, ASTM D695-08a, and ASTM D256 standards, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphology and the interfacial bonding of the fibres-matrix in composites. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites improve with the incorporation of fibres. The composite of 30 vol.% particle loading exhibit optimum values which are 32.23 MPa, 61.66 MPa, and 4.12 kJ/m2 for flexural, compressive, and impact strength, respectively. This was because good compatibility of fibre-matrix bonding. Consequently, sugar palm fibre is one of the prospective fibres and could be used as a potential resource to reinforcement polymer composite
Toward homochiral protocells in noncatalytic peptide systems
The activation-polymerization-epimerization-depolymerization (APED) model of
Plasson et al. has recently been proposed as a mechanism for the evolution of
homochirality on prebiotic Earth. The dynamics of the APED model in
two-dimensional spatially-extended systems is investigated for various
realistic reaction parameters. It is found that the APED system allows for the
formation of isolated homochiral proto-domains surrounded by a racemate. A
diffusive slowdown of the APED network such as induced through tidal motion or
evaporating pools and lagoons leads to the stabilization of homochiral bounded
structures as expected in the first self-assembled protocells.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Monte Carlo Comparisons to a Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Detector with low Transition-Edge-Sensor Transition Temperature
We present results on phonon quasidiffusion and Transition Edge Sensor (TES)
studies in a large, 3 inch diameter, 1 inch thick [100] high purity germanium
crystal, cooled to 50 mK in the vacuum of a dilution refrigerator, and exposed
with 59.5 keV gamma-rays from an Am-241 calibration source. We compare
calibration data with results from a Monte Carlo which includes phonon
quasidiffusion and the generation of phonons created by charge carriers as they
are drifted across the detector by ionization readout channels. The phonon
energy is then parsed into TES based phonon readout channels and input into a
TES simulator
Microtiming patterns and interactions with musical properties in Samba music
In this study, we focus on the interaction between microtiming patterns and several musical properties: intensity, meter and spectral characteristics. The data-set of 106 musical audio excerpts is processed by means of an auditory model and then divided into several spectral regions and metric levels. The resulting segments are described in terms of their musical properties, over which patterns of peak positions and their intensities are sought. A clustering algorithm is used to systematize the process of pattern detection. The results confirm previously reported anticipations of the third and fourth semiquavers in a beat. We also argue that these patterns of microtiming deviations interact with different profiles of intensities that change according to the metrical structure and spectral characteristics. In particular, we suggest two new findings: (i) a small delay of microtiming positions at the lower end of the spectrum on the first semiquaver of each beat and (ii) systematic forms of accelerando and ritardando at a microtiming level covering two-beat and four-beat phrases. The results demonstrate the importance of multidimensional interactions with timing aspects of music. However, more research is needed in order to find proper representations for rhythm and microtiming aspects in such contexts
Isolation and phylogenetic characterization of Ebola viruses causing different outbreaks in Gabon.
Three outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever have recently occurred in Gabon. Virus has been isolated from clinical materials from all three outbreaks, and nucleotide sequence analysis of the glycoprotein gene of the isolates and virus present in clinical samples has been carried out. These data indicate that each of the three outbreaks should be considered an independent emergence of a different Ebola virus of the Zaire subtype. As in earlier Ebola virus outbreaks, no genetic variability was detected between virus samples taken during an individual outbreak
Results from a Low-Energy Analysis of the CDMS II Germanium Data
We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter
Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken
between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are
reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased
sensitivity to interactions from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs)
with masses below ~10 GeV/c^2. This analysis provides stronger constraints than
previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c^2 and excludes parameter
space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and
CoGeNT experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Supplemental material included as ancillary
