    A sub-product construction of Poincare-Einstein metrics

    Given any two Einstein (pseudo-)metrics, with scalar curvatures suitably related, we give an explicit construction of a Poincar\'e-Einstein (pseudo-)metric with conformal infinity the conformal class of the product of the initial metrics. We show that these metrics are equivalent to ambient metrics for the given conformal structure. The ambient metrics have holonomy that agrees with the conformal holonomy. In the generic case the ambient metric arises directly as a product of the metric cones over the original Einstein spaces. In general the conformal infinity of the Poincare metrics we construct is not Einstein, and so this describes a class of non-conformally Einstein metrics for which the (Fefferman-Graham) obstruction tensor vanishes.Comment: 23 pages Minor correction to section 5.     Clinical validation of an automated fluorogenic factor XIII activity assay based on isopeptidase activity

    Hereditary factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare autosomal bleeding disorder which can cause life-threatening bleeding. Acquired deficiency can be immune-mediated or due to increased consumption or reduced synthesis. The most commonly used screening test is insensitive, and widely used quantitative assays have analytical limitations. The present study sought to validate Technofluor FXIII Activity, the first isopeptidase-based assay available on a routine coagulation analyser, the Ceveron s100. Linearity was evidenced throughout the measuring range, with correlation coefficients of >0.99, and coefficients of variation for repeatability and reproducibility were 5% and 10%, respectively. A normally distributed reference range of 47.0−135.5 IU/dL was derived from 154 normal donors. Clinical samples with Technofluor FXIII Activity results between 0 and 167.0 IU/dL were assayed with Berichrom® FXIII Activity, a functional ammonia release assay, and the HemosIL™ FXIII antigen assay, generating correlations of 0.950 and 0.980, respectively. Experiments with a transglutaminase inhibitor showed that Technofluor FXIII Activity can detect inhibition of enzymatic activity. No interference was exhibited by high levels of haemolysis and lipaemia, and interference by bilirubin was evident at 18 mg/dL, a level commensurate with severe liver disease. Technofluor FXIII Activity is a rapid, accurate and precise assay suitable for routine diagnostic use with fewer interferents than ammonia release FXIII activity assays

    The Impact of Isospin Breaking on the Distribution of Transition Probabilities

    In the present paper we investigate the effect of symmetry breaking in the statistical distributions of reduced transition amplitudes and reduced transition probabilities. These quantities are easier to access experimentally than the components of the eigenvectors and were measured by Adams et al. for the electromagnetic transitions in ^{26}Al. We focus on isospin symmetry breaking described by a matrix model where both, the Hamiltonian and the electromagnetic operator, break the symmetry. The results show that for partial isospin conservation, the statistical distribution of the reduced transition probability can considerably deviate from the Porter-Thomas distribution.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR

    Charged Current Neutrino Nucleus Interactions at Intermediate Energies

    We have developed a model to describe the interactions of neutrinos with nucleons and nuclei, focusing on the region of the quasielastic and Delta(1232) peaks. We describe neutrino nucleon collisions with a fully relativistic formalism which incorporates state-of-the-art parametrizations of the form factors for both the nucleon and the N-Delta transition. The model has then been extended to finite nuclei, taking into account nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking (both within the local density approximation), nuclear binding and final state interactions. The in-medium modification of the Delta resonance due to Pauli blocking and collisional broadening have also been included. Final state interactions are implemented by means of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) coupled-channel transport model. Results for charged current inclusive cross sections and exclusive channels as pion production and nucleon knockout are presented and discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures; v2: 2 figures and discussion added, version accepted for publication in Phys.     Teachers' emotional well-being during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic with long school closures: a large-scale cross-sectional survey in Northern Italy

    Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the magnitude of emotional burden on teaching staff during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in a significantly impacted region. In addition, the correlates of emotional burden were analysed to enable the design of targeted interventions. Study design: This study was a cross-sectional survey. Methods: An electronic survey was administered to the teaching staff at public schools and kindergartens in a specific geographical area. Cross-sectional assessments of pandemic-specific variables were performed using the Pandemic Fatigue Scale, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS)-21, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Resilient Coping Scale. DASS-21 results were compared with results from a parallel survey that was representative of the local general population. Results: In total, 3251 teaching staff members participated in the survey. Teachers showed a higher emotional burden for depression, anxiety and stress than the general population during the pandemic. According to a linear regression model, this burden is correlated with the language in which the questionnaires were answered, mistrust towards institutions, specific SARS-CoV-2 anxiety, past infection with SARS-CoV-2, avoidance of information about the pandemic and pandemic fatigue; emotional burden was negatively correlated with measures for life satisfaction, resilience and team atmosphere. Some independent variables were shown to contribute differentially to the variance of depression, anxiety or stress. Conclusions: Emotional distress during the pandemic among teachers is higher than in the general population and correlates with variables that could, at least in principle, be targeted for specific interventions

    Virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes in human MRSA ST398 isolates in Austria

    This study determined the genetic background of virulence and resistance genes of MRSA ST398 in Austria. From 2004 up to 2008 a total of 41 human isolates of MRSA ST398 were investigated for virulence and resistance gene patterns using DNA microarray chip analysis. Highly similar virulence gene profiles were found in 29 (70·7%) of the isolates but genes encoding Panton-Valentine leukocidin, enterotoxins, or toxic shock syndrome toxin were not detected. Genes conferring resistance to tetracycline and erythromycin-lincosamide were common as all but one of the isolates exhibited tetM and/or tetK, which are involved in tetracycline resistance, and 12 (29·9%) were positive for ermC, conferring resistance to erythromycin/lincosamide.     Localization in Strongly Chaotic Systems

    We show that, in the semiclassical limit and whenever the elements of the Hamiltonian matrix are random enough, the eigenvectors of strongly chaotic time-independent systems in ordered bases can on average be exponentially localized across the energy shell and decay faster than exponentially outside the energy shell.     LHC collimation efficiency during commissioning

    The design of the LHC collimation system requires understanding and maximizing the ultimate performance with all collimators. However, for the commissioning of the LHC it is important to analyze the collimation efficiency with certain subsets of collimators, with increased collimator gaps and relaxed set-up tolerances. Special studies on halo tracking and energy deposition have been performed in order to address this question. The expected cleaning performance and intensity limits are discussed for various collimation scenarios which might be used during commissioning of the LHC

    Analyzing symmetry breaking within a chaotic quantum system via Bayesian inference

    Bayesian inference is applied to the level fluctuations of two coupled microwave billiards in order to extract the coupling strength. The coupled resonators provide a model of a chaotic quantum system containing two coupled symmetry classes of levels. The number variance is used to quantify the level fluctuations as a function of the coupling and to construct the conditional probability distribution of the data.
