    The rhetoric of the consumer and customer control in China

    This article explores the extent to which the rhetoric of the sovereign consumer and the use of the customer as a device of managerial control have been transferred to the subsidiaries of multinational retail firms operating in China. Based upon data drawn from over 200 interviews conducted at UK and Japanese multi-nationals' stores, in this rapidly internationalizing context it was evident that the notion of the sovereign consumer was ubiquitous and procedures designed to inculcate management by customers or consumer control had been implemented. However, it was equally apparent that the rhetoric of the consumer not only served managerial ends, but also provided a rich and fertile resource for shopfloor workers. Meaningful, socially embedded relationships could also play a crucial role in transactions. Moreover, with respect to discipline and control, employees were fully aware that power lay with their managers, rather than disembodied consumers or even actual customers

    Os M. pretenderam traçar um quadro da HistĂłria da Alimentação, nĂŁo como um novo ramo epistemolĂłgico da disciplina, mas como um campo em desenvolvimento de prĂĄticas e atividades especializadas, incluindo pesquisa, formação, publicaçÔes, associaçÔes, encontros acadĂȘmicos, etc. Um breve relato das condiçÔes em que tal campo se assentou faz-se preceder de um panorama dos estudos de alimentação e temas correia tos, em geral, segundo cinco abardagens Ia biolĂłgica, a econĂŽmica, a social, a cultural e a filosĂłfica!, assim como da identificação das contribuiçÔes mais relevantes da Antropologia, Arqueologia, Sociologia e Geografia. A fim de comentar a multiforme e volumosa bibliografia histĂłrica, foi ela organizada segundo critĂ©rios morfolĂłgicos. A seguir, alguns tĂłpicos importantes mereceram tratamento Ă  parte: a fome, o alimento e o domĂ­nio religioso, as descobertas europĂ©ias e a difusĂŁo mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia.     Mediaeval documents reflect the image of mediaeval woman in a special way, generally in relationship with men, as daughter of, wife of, widow of... There are few many women that act by herselves in a patriarcal society. This paper wants to give a look on the mediaeval woman through another way: the iconographical images. Miniatures, pictures, sculptures, altarpieces, engraving, inscriptions, drawings, show us how were mediaeval women, how they were dressed, how they worked and how they lived. We can see two kinds of woman image, the sacred one with virgins, martyrs and roman and gothic mother-of-god's; and the profane image, that presents not only ladies and gentlewomen but marginal women as jews and witches. But, above all, there are workers, women that work as peasants, as craftswomen, and that make all kind of jobs beside men

    Part 16: Performance Measurement SystemsInternational audienceIn turbulent markets and scenarios that require extremely competitive and innovative organizations, the need to transform the resource base in accordance with the changing markets and technology is apparent. In order to do this, it is necessary to quickly identify and incorporate market opportunities, provide high capacity for learning, innovation and work collaboratively with other organizations in a network – in a collaborative way - to coordinate and transform their resource base. It is based on this information that this work aims to discuss the association between the role of an organization in a collaborative network and the development of dynamic capabilities, in response to environmental pressures and turbulence. Similarly, we seek to identify the impact (the improvement, or not) that generates the dynamics of organizations in a collaborative network. This paper brings two main contributions: the first lists a theoretical framework associating three main constructs: Dynamic Capabilities, Collaborative Networks and Turbulent Environments. The second proposes a conceptual model involving these three main constructs, facing adaptation, resilience and competitiveness of organizations
