The active control of wing rotation by Drosophila

This paper investigates the temporal control of a fast wing rotation in flies, the ventral flip, which occurs during the transition from downstroke to upstroke. Tethered flying Drosophila actively modulate the timing of these rapid supinations during yaw responses evoked by an oscillating visual stimulus. The time difference between the two wings is controlled such that the wing on the outside of a fictive turn rotates in advance of its contralateral partner. This modulation of ventral-flip timing between the two wings is strongly coupled with changes in wing-stroke amplitude. Typically, an increase in the stroke amplitude of one wing is correlated with an advance in the timing of the ventral flip of the same wing. However, flies do display a limited ability to control these two behaviors independently, as shown by flight records in which the correlation between ventral-flip timing and stroke amplitude transiently reverses. The control of ventral-flip timing may be part of an unsteady aerodynamic mechanism that enables the fly to alter the magnitude and direction of flight forces during turning maneuvers

Lipophilic organic substances in the environment are nearly exclusive of anthropogenic origin. Input of contaminants to sea and fresh water lakes arise via rivers, the atmosphere, direct intake and disposals. Intake by fish occurs via diet or directly from the water. The contamination level in fish is influenced by the fishing ground, fat content, biological cycle and age of the fish. But the effect for fish as food is very limited. Levels of lipophilic organic contaminants in the edible part of fish important for human consumption are far below the German maximum allowable evels of residues and pollutants

Proper static potential in classical lattice gauge theory at finite T

We compute the proper real-time interaction potential between a static quark and antiquark in classical lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. Our central result is the determination of the screened real-part of this potential, and we reconfirm the presence of an imaginary part. The real part is intimately related to the back-reaction of the static sources onto the gauge fields, incorporated via Gauss’s law. The use of ultrasonic measurements assessed with two probes in live lambs for predicting the carcass composition

The accuracy of the use of two probes (UST-586-5 MHz and UST-556 tu-7.5 MHz) for predicting the carcass composition were used in 36 lambs of Churra Bragançana breed ranging in body weight from 26 to 47kg. Comparison between the ultrasonic measurements assessed in live lambs with the same measurements taken on carcass were established. The best relationship obtained were between the ultrasonic measurements assessed with 7.5 MHz probe on last rib and the same fat thickness measurements taken on carcass. Between 41 and 86tm of the variation in the weight of carcass components were accounted for by variation in body weight and the ultrasonic measurements

Chancen des religiösen Kinder- und Jugendbuches

Unter den sozialen Kommunikationsmitteln nimmt das Medium Buch einen besonderen Platz ein: In den meisten Texten zum Verhältnis von Kirche und Medien bleibt es unerwähnt. Dies sicher auch deshalb, weil Bücher im klassischen Sinne nicht zu den Massenkommunikationsmitteln zu rechnen sind. Trotzdem nehmen Bücher in der kirchlichen Medienarbeit einen besonderen Stellenwert ein. Dies belegen die katholische Büchereiarbeit und die Stiftung des Katholischen Kinderbuchpreises durch die Deutsche Bischofskonferenz im Jahre 1977. Seither wurde der Preis insgesamt sechs Mal verliehen. Die Preisverleihung im Oktober 1989 vereinigte Aspekte, die nicht alltäglich zusammengesehen werden: Der Preis wurde verliehen an Sonia Levitin. Das Thema ist weit und vieldimensional. Dies gilt gerade auch, wenn man noch das Internet und die Sozialen Me­dien einbezieht. Gerade solche Probleme muss ich aus­ klammern. Ich möchte mich vor allem mit Konflikten und ihrer Erörterung in den Medien befassen. Ich beziehe mich dabei mehr auf die objektive und allgemeine Kommunikation, wenig auf ein­ zelne subjektive und persönliche Konflikte. (...
