    Detection of X-ray emission from the host clusters of 3CR quasars

    We report the detection of extended X-ray emission around several powerful 3CR quasars with redshifts out to 0.73. The ROSAT HRI images of the quasars have been corrected for spacecraft wobble and compared with an empirical point-spread function. All the quasars examined show excess emission at radii of 15 arcsec and more; the evidence being strong for the more distant objects and weak only for the two nearest ones, which are known from other wavelengths not to lie in strongly clustered environments. The spatial profiles of the extended component is consistent with thermal emission from the intracluster medium of moderately rich host clusters to the quasars. The total luminosities of the clusters are in the range 4x10^44 - 3x10^45 erg/s, assuming a temperature of 4keV. The inner regions of the intracluster medium are, in all cases, dense enough to be part of a cooling flow.Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures and 4 tables. To be published in MNRA

    Activity ageing in growing networks

    We present a model for growing information networks where the ageing of a node depends on the time at which it entered the network and on the last time it was cited. The model is shown to undergo a transition from a small-world to large-world network.     Multi-scale analysis of the surface layer urban heat island effect in five higher density precincts of central Sydney

    The urban heat island (UHI) effect is invariably present in cities, mainly due to increased urbanisation. It can result in higher urban densities being significantly hotter (frequently more than 4°C, even up to 10°C) than their peri-urban surroundings. Urban structure and land cover are key contributors to the surface layer urban heat island (sUHI) effect at city and district scale. This research aims to explore which urban configurations can make urban precincts and their microclimates more resilient to the dangerous sUHI effect. In the context of the city of Sydney, Australia, the research aims to explore the most heat resilient urban features for neighbourhoods, at precinct scale. The investigation examines five high density precincts in central Sydney. The analysis of these precincts is based on remote sensing thermal data of two independent sources: a nocturnal remote-sensing thermal image of central Sydney on 6 February 2009 and a diurnal Landsat 7– ETM+ data from 2008-2009. Comparing the surface temperature of streetscape and buildings’ rooftop feature layers indicates that open spaces are the urban elements most sensitive to the sUHI effect. Therefore, the correlations between street network intensity, open public space ratio, and urban greenery plot ratio and sUHI effect are being analysed in the five high density precincts selected. Results indicate that a higher open space ratio and street network intensity have a significant correlation to a higher sUHI effect at precinct scale. However, higher urban greenery plot ratios could mitigate the sUHI effect in these precincts. In addition, annual variation of land use features of streetscape, building (rooftop), open space and urban greenery are being analysed based on diurnal Landsat 7– ETM+ data for 2008-2009. Results indicate that an increase in urban greenery is the most effective strategy for land surface that is more resilient to the sUHI, while open public space is up to 15 per cent less heat resilient.     Seasonal variation of aliphatic amines in marine sub-micrometer particles at the Cape Verde islands

    Monomethylamine (MA), dimethylamine (DMA) and diethylamine (DEA) were detected at non-negligible concentrations in sub-micrometer particles at the Cap Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO) located on the island of SĂŁo Vicente in Cape Verde during algal blooms in 2007. The concentrations of these amines in five stage impactor samples ranged from 0–30 pg m−3 for MA, 130–360 pg m−3 for DMA and 5–110 pg m−3 for DEA during the spring bloom in May 2007 and 2–520 pg m−3 for MA, 100–1400 pg m−3 for DMA and 90–760 pg m−3 for DEA during an unexpected winter algal bloom in December 2007. Anomalously high Saharan dust deposition and intensive ocean layer deepening were found at the Atmospheric Observatory and the associated Ocean Observatory during algal bloom periods. The highest amine concentrations in fine particles (impactor stage 2, 0.14–0.42 ÎŒm) indicate that amines are likely taken up from the gas phase into the acidic sub-micrometer particles. The contribution of amines to the organic carbon (OC) content ranged from 0.2–2.5% C in the winter months, indicating the importance of this class of compounds to the carbon cycle in the marine environment. Furthermore, aliphatic amines originating from marine biological sources likely contribute significantly to the nitrogen content in the marine atmosphere. The average contribution of the amines to the detected nitrogen species in sub-micrometer particles can be non-negligible, especially in the winter months (0.1% N–1.5% N in the sum of nitrate, ammonium and amines). This indicates that these smaller aliphatic amines can be important for the carbon and the nitrogen cycles in the remote marine environment

    Influence of the pion-nucleon interaction on the collective pion flow in heavy ion reactions

    We investigate the influence of the real part of the in-medium pion optical potential on the pion dynamics in intermediate energy heavy ion reactions at 1 GeV/A. For different models, i.e. a phenomenological model and the Δ\Delta--hole model, a pionic potential is extracted from the dispersion relation and used in Quantum Molecular Dynamics calculations. In addition with the inelastic scattering processes we thus take care of both, real and imaginary part of the pion optical potential. A strong influence of the real pionic potential on the pion in-plane flow is observed. In general such a potential has the tendency to reduce the anticorrelation of pion and nucleon flow in non-central collisions.Comment: 12 pages Latex, 4 PS-figure

    In Quantum Physics, a measurement is represented by a projection on some closed subspace of a Hilbert space. We study algebras of operators that abstract from the algebra of projections on closed subspaces of a Hilbert space. The properties of such operators are justified on epistemological grounds. Commutation of measurements is a central topic of interest. Classical logical systems may be viewed as measurement algebras in which all measurements commute.     Formation and evolution of clumpy tidal tails around globular clusters

    We present some results of numerical simulations of a globular cluster orbiting in the central region of a triaxial galaxy on a set of 'loop' orbits. Tails start forming after about a quarter of the globular cluster orbital period and develop, in most cases, along the cluster orbit, showing clumpy substructures as observed, for example, in Palomar 5. If completely detectable, clumps can contain about 7,000 solar masses each, i.e. about 10% of the cluster mass at that epoch. The morphology of tails and clumps and the kinematical properties of stars in the tails are studied and compared with available observational data. Our finding is that the stellar velocity dispersion tends to level off at large radii, in agreement to that found for M15 and Omega Centauri.Comment: LaTeX 2e, uses AASTeX v5.x, 40 pages with 18 figures.     Spectator detection for the measurement of proton neutron interactions at ANKE

    A telescope of three silicon detectors has been installed close to the internal target position of the ANKE spectrometer, which is situated inside the ultra-high vacuum of the COSY-Juelich light-ion storage ring. The detection and identification of slow protons and deuterons emerging from a deuterium cluster-jet target thus becomes feasible. A good measurement of the energy and angle of such a spectator proton (p_sp) allows one to identify a reaction as having taken place on the neutron in the target and then to determine the kinematical variables of the ion-neutron system on an event-by-event basis over a range of c.m. energies. The system has been successfully tested under laboratory conditions. By measuring the spectator proton in the p d to p_sp d pi^0 reaction in coincidence with a fast deuteron in the ANKE Forward Detector, values of the p n to d pi^0 total cross-section have been deduced. Further applications of the telescope include the determination of the luminosity and beam polarisation which are required for several experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure

    Quasi-Bayesian Nonparametric Density Estimation via Autoregressive Predictive Updates

    Bayesian methods are a popular choice for statistical inference in small-data regimes due to the regularization effect induced by the prior. In the context of density estimation, the standard nonparametric Bayesian approach is to target the posterior predictive of the Dirichlet process mixture model. In general, direct estimation of the posterior predictive is intractable and so methods typically resort to approximating the posterior distribution as an intermediate step. The recent development of quasi-Bayesian predictive copula updates, however, has made it possible to perform tractable predictive density estimation without the need for posterior approximation. Although these estimators are computationally appealing, they struggle on non-smooth data distributions. This is due to the comparatively restrictive form of the likelihood models from which the proposed copula updates were derived. To address this shortcoming, we consider a Bayesian nonparametric model with an autoregressive likelihood decomposition and a Gaussian process prior. While the predictive update of such a model is typically intractable, we derive a quasi-Bayesian update that achieves state-of-the-art results in small-data regimes
