    Empirical Studies of Evolving Systems

    This paper describes the results of the working group investigating the issues of empirical studies for evolving systems. The groups found that there were many issues that were central to successful evolution and this concluded that this is a very important area within software engineering. Finally nine main areas were selected for consideration. For each of these areas the central issues were identified as well as success factors. In some cases success stories were also described and the critical factors accounting for the success analysed. In some cases it was later found that a number of areas were so tightly coupled that it was important to discuss them together

    Open-Ended Evolutionary Robotics: an Information Theoretic Approach

    This paper is concerned with designing self-driven fitness functions for Embedded Evolutionary Robotics. The proposed approach considers the entropy of the sensori-motor stream generated by the robot controller. This entropy is computed using unsupervised learning; its maximization, achieved by an on-board evolutionary algorithm, implements a "curiosity instinct", favouring controllers visiting many diverse sensori-motor states (sms). Further, the set of sms discovered by an individual can be transmitted to its offspring, making a cultural evolution mode possible. Cumulative entropy (computed from ancestors and current individual visits to the sms) defines another self-driven fitness; its optimization implements a "discovery instinct", as it favours controllers visiting new or rare sensori-motor states. Empirical results on the benchmark problems proposed by Lehman and Stanley (2008) comparatively demonstrate the merits of the approach

    Model Calculations for the Two-Fragment Electro-Disintegration of 4^4He

    Differential cross sections for the electro-disintegration process e+4He⟶3H+p+eâ€Če + {^4He} \longrightarrow {^3H}+ p + e' are calculated, using a model in which the final state interaction is included by means of a nucleon-nucleus (3+1) potential constructed via Marchenko inversion. The required bound-state wave functions are calculated within the integrodifferential equation approach (IDEA). In our model the important condition that the initial bound state and the final scattering state are orthogonal is fulfilled. The sensitivity of the cross section to the input p3Hp{^3H} interaction in certain kinematical regions is investigated. The approach adopted could be useful in reactions involving few cluster systems where effective interactions are not well known and exact methods are presently unavailable. Although, our Plane-Wave Impulse Approximation results exhibit, similarly to other calculations, a dip in the five-fold differential cross-section around a missing momentum of ∌450MeV/c\sim 450 MeV/c, it is argued that this is an artifact of the omission of re-scattering four-nucleon processes.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication by Phys.Rev.

    Full potential LAPW calculation of electron momentum density and related properties of Li

    Electron momentum density and Compton profiles in Lithium along ,, , and directions are calculated using Full-Potential Linear Augmented Plane Wave basis within generalized gradient approximation. The profiles have been corrected for correlations with Lam-Platzman formulation using self-consistent charge density. The first and second derivatives of Compton profiles are studied to investigate the Fermi surface breaks. Decent agreement is observed between recent experimental and our calculated values. Our values for the derivatives are found to be in better agreement with experiments than earlier theoretical results. Two-photon momentum density and one- and two-dimensional angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation are also calculated within the same formalism and including the electron-positron enhancement factor.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures TO appear in Physical Review

    Wear Minimization for Cuckoo Hashing: How Not to Throw a Lot of Eggs into One Basket

    We study wear-leveling techniques for cuckoo hashing, showing that it is possible to achieve a memory wear bound of log⁥log⁥n+O(1)\log\log n+O(1) after the insertion of nn items into a table of size CnCn for a suitable constant CC using cuckoo hashing.
