F. John's stability conditions vs. A. Carasso's SECB constraint for backward parabolic problems
In order to solve backward parabolic problems F. John [{\it Comm. Pure. Appl.
Math.} (1960)] introduced the two constraints "" and where satisfies the backward heat equation for
with the initial data
The {\it slow-evolution-from-the-continuation-boundary} (SECB) constraint has
been introduced by A. Carasso in [{\it SIAM J. Numer. Anal.} (1994)] to attain
continuous dependence on data for backward parabolic problems even at the
continuation boundary . The additional "SECB constraint" guarantees a
significant improvement in stability up to In this paper we prove that
the same type of stability can be obtained by using only two constraints among
the three. More precisely, we show that the a priori boundedness condition
is redundant. This implies that the Carasso's SECB condition
can be used to replace the a priori boundedness condition of F. John with an
improved stability estimate. Also a new class of regularized solutions is
introduced for backward parabolic problems with an SECB constraint. The new
regularized solutions are optimally stable and we also provide a constructive

The Look-back Time Evolution of Far-Ultraviolet Flux from the Brightest Cluster Elliptical Galaxies at z < 0.2
We present the GALEX UV photometry of the elliptical galaxies in Abell
clusters at moderate redshifts (z < 0.2) for the study of the look-back time
evolution of the UV upturn phenomenon. The brightest elliptical galaxies (M_r <
-22) in 12 remote clusters are compared with the nearby giant elliptical
galaxies of comparable optical luminosity in the Fornax and Virgo clusters. The
sample galaxies presented here appear to be quiescent without signs of massive
star formation or strong nuclear activity, and show smooth, extended profiles
in their UV images indicating that the far-UV (FUV) light is mostly produced by
hot stars in the underlying old stellar population. Compared to their
counterparts in nearby clusters, the FUV flux of cluster giant elliptical
galaxies at moderate redshifts fades rapidly with ~ 2 Gyrs of look-back time,
and the observed pace in FUV - V color evolution agrees reasonably well with
the prediction from the population synthesis models where the dominant FUV
source is hot horizontal-branch stars and their progeny. A similar amount of
color spread (~ 1 mag) in FUV - V exists among the brightest cluster elliptical
galaxies at z ~ 0.1, as observed among the nearby giant elliptical galaxies of

Morphological changes of injected calcium phosphate cement in osteoporotic compressed vertebral bodies
SUMMARY: This study was undertaken to investigate the radiologic and clinical outcomes of vertebroplasty with calcium phosphate (CaP) cement in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The morphological changes of injected CaP cement in osteoporotic compressed vertebral bodies were variable and unpredictable. We suggest that the practice of vertebroplasty using CaP should be reconsidered.
INTRODUCTION: Recently, CaP, an osteoconductive filler material, has been used in the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures. However, the clinical results of CaP-cement-augmented vertebrae are still not well established. The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical results of vertebroplasty with CaP by evaluating the morphological changes of CaP cement in compressed vertebral bodies.
METHODS: Fourteen patients have been followed for more than 2 years after vertebroplasty. The following parameters were reviewed: age, sex, T score, compliance with osteoporosis medications, visual analog scale score, compression ratio, subsequent compression fractures, and any morphological changes in the filler material.
RESULTS: The morphological changes of injected CaP included reabsorption, condensation, bone formation (osteogenesis), fracture of the CaP solid hump, and heterotopic ossification. Out of 14 patients, 11 (78.6%) developed progression of the compression of the CaP-augmented vertebral bodies after vertebroplasty.
CONCLUSIONS: The morphological changes of the injected CaP cement in the vertebral bodies were variable and unpredictable. The compression of the CaP-augmented vertebrae progressed continuously for 2 years or more. The findings of this study suggest that vertebroplasty using CaP cement should be reconsidered.ope

A Microhomology-Mediated Break-Induced Replication Model for the Origin of Human Copy Number Variation
Chromosome structural changes with nonrecurrent endpoints associated with genomic disorders offer windows into the mechanism of origin of copy number variation (CNV). A recent report of nonrecurrent duplications associated with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease identified three distinctive characteristics. First, the majority of events can be seen to be complex, showing discontinuous duplications mixed with deletions, inverted duplications, and triplications. Second, junctions at endpoints show microhomology of 2–5 base pairs (bp). Third, endpoints occur near pre-existing low copy repeats (LCRs). Using these observations and evidence from DNA repair in other organisms, we derive a model of microhomology-mediated break-induced replication (MMBIR) for the origin of CNV and, ultimately, of LCRs. We propose that breakage of replication forks in stressed cells that are deficient in homologous recombination induces an aberrant repair process with features of break-induced replication (BIR). Under these circumstances, single-strand 3′ tails from broken replication forks will anneal with microhomology on any single-stranded DNA nearby, priming low-processivity polymerization with multiple template switches generating complex rearrangements, and eventual re-establishment of processive replication

Interaction of Temperature and Light in the Development of Freezing Tolerance in Plants
Abstract Freezing tolerance is the result of a wide range
of physical and biochemical processes, such as the induction
of antifreeze proteins, changes in membrane composition,
the accumulation of osmoprotectants, and changes
in the redox status, which allow plants to function at low
temperatures. Even in frost-tolerant species, a certain period
of growth at low but nonfreezing temperatures, known
as frost or cold hardening, is required for the development
of a high level of frost hardiness. It has long been known
that frost hardening at low temperature under low light
intensity is much less effective than under normal light
conditions; it has also been shown that elevated light
intensity at normal temperatures may partly replace the
cold-hardening period. Earlier results indicated that cold
acclimation reflects a response to a chloroplastic redox
signal while the effects of excitation pressure extend
beyond photosynthetic acclimation, influencing plant
morphology and the expression of certain nuclear genes
involved in cold acclimation. Recent results have shown
that not only are parameters closely linked to the photosynthetic
electron transport processes affected by light
during hardening at low temperature, but light may also
have an influence on the expression level of several other
cold-related genes; several cold-acclimation processes can
function efficiently only in the presence of light. The
present review provides an overview of mechanisms that
may explain how light improves the freezing tolerance of
plants during the cold-hardening period
IL28B SNP rs12979860 Is a Critical Predictor for On-Treatment and Sustained Virologic Response in Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Genotype-1 Infection
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of interleukin-28B (IL28B) have received considerable interest for their association with sustained virological response (SVR) when treating patients of genotype-1 hepatitis C virus (GT1-HCV) chronic infection with pegylated interferon and ribavirin (PegIFN/RBV). This study was to investigate the predictive power of IL28B SNPs for on-treatment responses and SVR in treatment-naïve patients with GT1-HCV chronic infection.We analyzed ten SNPs of IL28B in 191 treatment-naïve patients with GT1-HCV chronic infection who received PegIFN/RBV. In these patients, rapid virological response (RVR), early virological response (EVR) and SVR were achieved in 69.6%, 95.8% and 68.6% of the patients, respectively. Multivariate analysis (odds ratio; 95% confidence interval; P value) indicated age (0.96; 0.93-0.99; 0.012), low baseline viral load (4.65; 2.23-9.66; <0.001) and CC genotype of rs12979860 (7.74; 2.55-23.53; <0.001) but no other SNPs were independent predictors for SVR. In addition, none of the ten SNPs examined were associated with baseline viral load and stages of liver fibrosis. Regarding RVR, low baseline viral load (2.83; 1.40-5.73; 0.004) and CC genotype of rs12979860 (10.52; 3.45-32.04; <0.001) were two critical predictors. As for EVR, only CC genotype of rs12979860 (36.21; 6.68-196.38; <0.001) was the predictor. Similarly, for end of treatment response (ETR), CC genotype of rs12979860 (15.42; 4.62-51.18; <0.001) was the only predictor. For patients with RVR, only low baseline viral load (3.90; 1.57-9.68; 0.003) could predict the SVR. For patients without RVR, only rs12979860 (4.60; 1.13-18.65; 0.033) was the predictor for SVR.rs12979860 is the critical predictor for RVR, EVR, ETR and SVR in treatment-naïve patients of GT1-HCV chronic infection. Furthermore, this SNP is the only predictor for SVR in patients without RVR. These results have provided evidence that rs12979860 is the ideal IL28B SNP for genetic testing in treating patients of GT1-HCV chronic infection
