    Absorption Cross Sections of NH_3, NH_2D, NHD_2, and ND_3 in the Spectral Range 140-220 nm and Implications for Planetary Isotopic Fractionation

    Cross sections for photoabsorption of NH_3, NH_2D, NHD_2, and ND_3 in the spectral region 140-220 nm were determined at ~298 K using synchrotron radiation. Absorption spectra of NH_2D and NHD_2 were deduced from spectra of mixtures of NH_3 and ND_3, of which the equilibrium concentrations for all four isotopologues obey statistical distributions. Cross sections of NH_2D, NHD_2, and ND_3 are new. Oscillator strengths, an integration of absorption cross sections over the spectral lines, for both A ← X and B ← X systems of NH_3 agree satisfactorily with previous reports; values for NH_2D, NHD_2, and ND_3 agree with quantum chemical predictions. The photolysis of NH_3 provides a major source of reactive hydrogen in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere of giant planets such as Jupiter. Incorporating the measured photoabsorption cross sections of NH_3 and NH_2D into the Caltech/JPL photochemical diffusive model for the atmosphere of Jupiter, we find that the photolysis efficiency of NH_2D is lower than that of NH_3 by as much as 30%. The D/H ratio in NH_2D/NH_3 for tracing the microphysics in the troposphere of Jupiter is also discussed

    A blockchain-IoT platform for the smart pallet pooling management

    Pallet management as a backbone of logistics and supply chain activities is essential to supply chain parties, while a number of regulations, standards and operational constraints are considered in daily operations. In recent years, pallet pooling has been unconventionally advocated to manage pallets in a closed-loop system to enhance the sustainability and operational effectiveness, but pitfalls in terms of service reliability, quality compliance and pallet limitation when using a single service provider may occur. Therefore, this study incorporates a decentralisation mechanism into the pallet management to formulate a technological eco-system for pallet pooling, namely Pallet as a Service (PalletaaS), raised by the foundation of consortium blockchain and Internet of things (IoT). Consortium blockchain is regarded as the blockchain 3.0 to facilitate more industrial applications, except cryptocurrency, and the synergy of integrating a consortium blockchain and IoT is thus investigated. The corresponding layered architecture is proposed to structure the system deployment in the industry, in which the location-inventory-routing problem for pallet pooling is formulated. To demonstrate the values of this study, a case analysis to illustrate the human–computer interaction and pallet pooling operations is conducted. Overall, this study standardises the decentralised pallet management in the closed-loop mechanism, resulting in a constructive impact to sustainable development in the logistics industry

    The role of transesophageal echocardiography in the diagnosis and management of children and young adults with valvar diseases of the left heart

    Summary The role of transesophageal echocardiography in the diagnosis and management of left-sided cardiac valvar disease in children and young adults was assessed in terms of whether additional information (over transthoracic echocardiography) could be obtained, and whether the added information contributed to the better management of the patients. Between January 1991 to August 1992, 27 consecutive patients were studied. Their age ranged from 2.5 to 20 years (mean 12.7), with body weights ranging between 12 and 60 kg (mean 35.6). Twelve of the children suffered from atrioventricular valvar disease, 13 had predominant aortic valvar lesions and two had mixed valvar pathologies. Additional information was obtained by transesophageal over that of transthoracic echocardiography in 18 children (67%). Transesophageal echocardiography clarified the etiologies or mechanism of valvar regurgitation in eight and seven children with atrioventricular and aortic pathologies, respectively. The technique correctly diagnosed severe mitral regurgitation underestimated by conventional technique, detected a missed eccentric aortic regurgitant jet and convincingly excluded bacterial vegetations in one case each. The investigation contributed to the better management of three children (11%) by providing information that allowed the appropriate choice of therapy. Transesophageal echocardiography, therefore, is a useful technique for the diagnosis and management of valvar disease of the left heart in children and young adults.published_or_final_versio

    Absorption cross sections of HCl and DCl at 135-232 nanometers: implications for photodissociation on Venus

    Cross sections for photoabsorption of HCl and DCl are determined in the spectral region of 135-232 nm using radiation from a synchrotron light source. At wavelengths near the onset of absorption (λ > 200 nm), cross sections of HCl are approximately 5-10 times larger than those of DCl. These data are used to calculate rates of photodissociation of HCl and DCl in the Venusian atmosphere. For the entire wavelength region measured, the rate of photodissociation of DCl is only 16% that of HCl. The difference in rates of photodissociation contributes to the exceptionally large [D]/[H] ratio of the Venusian atmosphere

    Preparation of photocatalysts of TiO2 and Ag-TiO2 was carried out by coprecipitation method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, EDX, and XRF analysis. The disinfection of E. coli, a model indicator organism for the safe water supply, was investigated by using TiO2 and Ag-TiO2 under different light sources. The treatment efficacy for the inactivation of E. coli would be UV/Ag-TiO2; visible/Ag-TiO2; dark/Ag-TiO2; UV (all 100%) \u3e UV/TiO2 (99%) \u3e visible/TiO2 (96%) \u3e dark/TiO2 (87%) \u3e visible (23%) \u3e dark (19%). The order of disinfection efficiency by their corresponding kinetic initial apparent rate constants, , (min−1) would be UV/Ag-TiO2; visible/Ag-TiO2 (both 6.67) \u3e UV (6.6) \u3e dark/Ag-TiO2 (6.56) \u3e UV/TiO2 (1.62) \u3e visible/TiO2 (1.08) \u3e dark/TiO2 (0.7) \u3e visible (0.28) \u3e dark (0.03). The application of TiO2 doped with silver strongly improved the ability of disinfection treatment. The study of mineralization of E. coli by measurement of TOC (total organic carbon) removal percentage showed that the visible light may effectively be applied for the disinfection unit of water and wastewater treatment system by using photocatalysts of Ag-TiO2
