    Multi-user lattice coding for the multiple-access relay channel

    This paper considers the multi-antenna multiple access relay channel (MARC), in which multiple users transmit messages to a common destination with the assistance of a relay. In a variety of MARC settings, the dynamic decode and forward (DDF) protocol is very useful due to its outstanding rate performance. However, the lack of good structured codebooks so far hinders practical applications of DDF for MARC. In this work, two classes of structured MARC codes are proposed: 1) one-to-one relay-mapper aided multiuser lattice coding (O-MLC), and 2) modulo-sum relay-mapper aided multiuser lattice coding (MS-MLC). The former enjoys better rate performance, while the latter provides more flexibility to tradeoff between the complexity of the relay mapper and the rate performance. It is shown that, in order to approach the rate performance achievable by an unstructured codebook with maximum-likelihood decoding, it is crucial to use a new K-stage coset decoder for structured O-MLC, instead of the one-stage decoder proposed in previous works. However, if O-MLC is decoded with the one-stage decoder only, it can still achieve the optimal DDF diversity-multiplexing gain tradeoff in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. As for MS-MLC, its rate performance can approach that of the O-MLC by increasing the complexity of the modulo-sum relay-mapper. Finally, for practical implementations of both O-MLC and MS-MLC, practical short length lattice codes with linear mappers are designed, which facilitate efficient lattice decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed coding schemes outperform existing schemes in terms of outage probabilities in a variety of channel settings.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figure

    Filter and nested-lattice code design for fading MIMO channels with side-information

    Linear-assignment Gel'fand-Pinsker coding (LA-GPC) is a coding technique for channels with interference known only at the transmitter, where the known interference is treated as side-information (SI). As a special case of LA-GPC, dirty paper coding has been shown to be able to achieve the optimal interference-free rate for interference channels with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In the cases where only the channel distribution information at the transmitter (CDIT) is available, LA-GPC also has good (sometimes optimal) performance in a variety of fast and slow fading SI channels. In this paper, we design the filters in nested-lattice based coding to make it achieve the same rate performance as LA-GPC in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Compared with the random Gaussian codebooks used in previous works, our resultant coding schemes have an algebraic structure and can be implemented in practical systems. A simulation in a slow-fading channel is also provided, and near interference-free error performance is obtained.     Peritoneal Dialysis in Infants and Children After Open Heart Surgery

    BackgroundInfants and children who undergo surgical repair of complex congenital heart diseases are prone to developing renal dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors associated with prolonged peritoneal dialysis (PD) and the mortality of pediatric patients with acute renal failure (ARF) after open heart surgery.MethodsFrom June 1999 to May 2007, a total of 542 children underwent open heart surgery for congenital heart disease. Fifteen (2.8%) experienced ARF and seven (1.3%) required PD. The clinical and laboratory variables were compared between the survivor and non-survivor groups of ARF patients that needed PD.ResultsThe non-survivors (n = 3, 43%) had a longer cardiopulmonary bypass time (154 ± 21 vs. 111 ± 8 minutes, p = 0.012) and longer aorta clamping time (92 ± 40 vs. 66 ± 15 minutes, p = 0.010) than the survivors (n = 4, 57%). Before the PD, the pH and base excess of the arterial blood gas analysis in the survivors was much higher than that non-survivors (7.30 ± 0.04 vs. 7.16 ± 0.10, p = 0.039; −5.15 ± 3.13 vs. −12.07 ± 2.9 mmol/L, p = 0.031). Furthermore, the survivors had a shorter interval between the onset of ARF and the day the PD was begun (1.2 ± 0.4 vs. 4.3 ± 1.2 days, p = 0.001), and shorter duration of PD (6.6 ± 2.7 vs. 13.0 ± 3.5 days, p= 0.036) than non-survivors.ConclusionEarly intervention with PD is a safe and effective method for managing patients with ARF after open heart surgery. The cardiopulmonary bypass and aortic clamping duration, time of initiating PD, duration of the PD, sepsis, and relative complications may predict the prognosis of these patients

    Cognitive Radio with Partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter

    In this paper, we present the cognitive radio system design with partial channel state information known at the transmitter (CSIT).We replace the dirty paper coding (DPC) used in the cognitive radio with full CSIT by the linear assignment Gel'fand-Pinsker coding (LA-GPC), which can utilize the limited knowledge of the channel more efficiently. Based on the achievable rate derived from the LA-GPC, two optimization problems under the fast and slow fading channels are formulated. We derive semianalytical solutions to find the relaying ratios and precoding coefficients. The critical observation is that the complex rate functions in these problems are closely related to ratios of quadratic form. Simulation results show that the proposed semi-analytical solutions perform close to the optimal solutions found by brute-force search, and outperform the systems based on naive DPC. Asymptotic analysis also shows that these solutions converge to the optimal ones solved with full CSIT when the K-factor of Rician channel approaches infinity. Moreover, a new coding scheme is proposed to implement the LA-GPC in practice.     Ontology-based Fuzzy Markup Language Agent for Student and Robot Co-Learning

    An intelligent robot agent based on domain ontology, machine learning mechanism, and Fuzzy Markup Language (FML) for students and robot co-learning is presented in this paper. The machine-human co-learning model is established to help various students learn the mathematical concepts based on their learning ability and performance. Meanwhile, the robot acts as a teacher's assistant to co-learn with children in the class. The FML-based knowledge base and rule base are embedded in the robot so that the teachers can get feedback from the robot on whether students make progress or not. Next, we inferred students' learning performance based on learning content's difficulty and students' ability, concentration level, as well as teamwork sprit in the class. Experimental results show that learning with the robot is helpful for disadvantaged and below-basic children.     Sibling recurrence risk ratio analysis of the metabolic syndrome and its components over time

    BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to estimate both cross-sectional sibling recurrence risk ratio (λ(s)) and lifetime λ(s )for the metabolic syndrome and its individual components over time among sibships in the prospectively followed-up cohorts provided by the Genetic Analysis Workshop 13. Five measures included in the operational criteria of the metabolic syndrome by the Adult Treatment Panel III were examined. A method for estimating sibling recurrence risk with correction for complete ascertainment was used to estimate the numerator, and the prevalence in the whole cohort was used as the denominator of λ(s). RESULTS: Considerable variability in the λ(s )was found in terms of different time-points for the cross-sectional definition, the times of fulfilling the criterion for lifetime definition, and different components. Obesity and hyperglycemia had the highest cross-sectional λ(s )of the five components. Both components also had the largest slopes in the linear trend of the lifetime λ(s). However, the magnitudes of the lifetime λ(s )were similar to that of the mean cross-sectional λ(s), which were <2. The results of nonparametric linkage analysis showed only suggestive evidence of linkage between one marker and lifetime diagnosis of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and metabolic syndrome, respectively. CONCLUSION: The λ(s )of the metabolic syndrome and its components varies substantially across time, and the λ(s )of lifetime diagnosis was not necessarily larger than that of a cross-sectional diagnosis. The magnitude of λ(s )does not predict well the maximum LOD score of linkage analysis
