Antiferromagnetic spin Seebeck Effect
We report on the observation of the spin Seebeck effect in antiferromagnetic
MnF. A device scale on-chip heater is deposited on a bilayer of Pt (4
nm)/MnF (110) (30 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a MgF (110)
substrate. Using Pt as a spin detector layer it is possible to measure
thermally generated spin current from MnF through the inverse spin Hall
effect. The low temperature (2 - 80 K) and high magnetic field (up to 140 kOe)
regime is explored. A clear spin flop transition corresponding to the sudden
rotation of antiferromagnetic spins out of the easy axis is observed in the
spin Seebeck signal when large magnetic fields (>9 T) are applied parallel the
easy axis of the MnF thin film. When magnetic field is applied
perpendicular to the easy axis, the spin flop transition is absent, as
expected

Comparison of Illumina and 454 Deep Sequencing in Participants Failing Raltegravir-Based Antiretroviral Therapy
Background: The impact of raltegravir-resistant HIV-1 minority variants (MVs) on raltegravir treatment failure is unknown. Illumina sequencing offers greater throughput than 454, but sequence analysis tools for viral sequencing are needed. We evaluated Illumina and 454 for the detection of HIV-1 raltegravir-resistant MVs. Methods: A5262 was a single-arm study of raltegravir and darunavir/ritonavir in treatment-naïve patients. Pre-treatment plasma was obtained from 5 participants with raltegravir resistance at the time of virologic failure. A control library was created by pooling integrase clones at predefined proportions. Multiplexed sequencing was performed with Illumina and 454 platforms at comparable costs. Illumina sequence analysis was performed with the novel snp-assess tool and 454 sequencing was analyzed with V-Phaser. Results: Illumina sequencing resulted in significantly higher sequence coverage and a 0.095% limit of detection. Illumina accurately detected all MVs in the control library at ≥0.5% and 7/10 MVs expected at 0.1%. 454 sequencing failed to detect any MVs at 0.1% with 5 false positive calls. For MVs detected in the patient samples by both 454 and Illumina, the correlation in the detected variant frequencies was high (R2 = 0.92, P<0.001). Illumina sequencing detected 2.4-fold greater nucleotide MVs and 2.9-fold greater amino acid MVs compared to 454. The only raltegravir-resistant MV detected was an E138K mutation in one participant by Illumina sequencing, but not by 454. Conclusions: In participants of A5262 with raltegravir resistance at virologic failure, baseline raltegravir-resistant MVs were rarely detected. At comparable costs to 454 sequencing, Illumina demonstrated greater depth of coverage, increased sensitivity for detecting HIV MVs, and fewer false positive variant calls
HIV patients treated with low-dose prednisolone exhibit lower immune activation than untreated patients
HIV-associated general immune activation is a strong predictor for HIV disease progression, suggesting that chronic immune activation may drive HIV pathogenesis. Consequently, immunomodulating agents may decelerate HIV disease progression. In an observational study, we determined immune activation in HIV patients receiving low-dose (5 mg/day) prednisolone with or without highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) compared to patients without prednisolone treatment. Lymphocyte activation was determined by flow cytometry detecting expression of CD38 on CD8(+) T cells. The monocyte activation markers sCD14 and LPS binding protein (LBP) as well as inflammation markers soluble urokinase plasminogen activated receptor (suPAR) and sCD40L were determined from plasma by ELISA. CD38-expression on CD8+ T lymphocytes was significantly lower in prednisolone-treated patients compared to untreated patients (median 55.40% [percentile range 48.76-67.70] versus 73.34% [65.21-78.92], p = 0.0011, Mann-Whitney test). Similarly, we detected lower levels of sCD14 (3.6 μg/ml [2.78-5.12] vs. 6.11 μg/ml [4.58-7.70]; p = 0.0048), LBP (2.18 ng/ml [1.59-2.87] vs. 3.45 ng/ml [1.84-5.03]; p = 0.0386), suPAR antigen (2.17 μg/ml [1.65-2.81] vs. 2.56 μg/ml [2.24-4.26]; p = 0.0351) and a trend towards lower levels of sCD40L (2.70 pg/ml [1.90-4.00] vs. 3.60 pg/ml [2.95-5.30]; p = 0.0782). Viral load in both groups was similar (0.8 × 105 ng/ml [0.2-42.4 × 105] vs. 1.1 × 105 [0.5-12.2 × 105]; p = 0.3806). No effects attributable to prednisolone were observed when patients receiving HAART in combination with prednisolone were compared to patients who received HAART alone.\ud
Patients treated with low-dose prednisolone display significantly lower general immune activation than untreated patients. Further longitudinal studies are required to assess whether treatment with low-dose prednisolone translates into differences in HIV disease progression

The January 1979 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum opens with a summary of Anchorage Superior Court Judge Victor D. Carlson's decision in the case of Sundberg v. State, in which he ruled AS 12.15.080, 'Means to Effect Arrest,' unconstitutional to the extent that it permits a peace officer to use deadly force to apprehend a suspect who is not a threat to anyone's life. Carlson declared Russel Sundberg's arrest for burglary unlawful due to use of excessive force and suppressed the evidence resulting from the arrest. The executive director of the Alaska Parole Board describes the importance of parole guidelines in light of the provision for such guidelines in the newly enacted Revised Alaska Criminal Code (effective January 1, 1980). A a new program in Anchorage for the prevention and prosecution of bad check writers is described.
