Maximum entropy methods for texture synthesis: theory and practice

Recent years have seen the rise of convolutional neural network techniques in exemplar-based image synthesis. These methods often rely on the minimization of some variational formulation on the image space for which the minimizers are assumed to be the solutions of the synthesis problem. In this paper we investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, another framework to deal with this problem using an alternate sampling/minimization scheme. First, we use results from information geometry to assess that our method yields a probability measure which has maximum entropy under some constraints in expectation. Then, we turn to the analysis of our method and we show, using recent results from the Markov chain literature, that its error can be explicitly bounded with constants which depend polynomially in the dimension even in the non-convex setting. This includes the case where the constraints are defined via a differentiable neural network. Finally, we present an extensive experimental study of the model, including a comparison with state-of-the-art methods and an extension to style transfer

If simplified, every information retrieval problem can be solved when the information need implied by its expression has been identified. We are interested in the criteria used in realising a good information retrieval problem expression. We have listed these criteria through some principles and maxims which first characterized the communication between two persons are applied. We choose to use the gricean maxims because they are the most favoured for this type of situation. Secondly, we have tried to identify some others principles that can be used to realise a good information retrieval problem expression. The principles by Grice can not resolve all forms of error associated with this particular form of communication. In our work, we defined three other principles namely: adhesion principle, reformulation principle, memorization principle. We give some examples of situations where the principles we have formulated are not applicable and the consequences. We present the possible applications of our new model: MIRABEL, which can help in the description of information retrieval problem from. It also compels its user to use essential good expression principle implicitly

Étude pétrographique des collections « gréco-bouddhiques » du musée Guimet

The analyse takes over the work started in 1962-1963 by Liliane Courtois with the sculptures of the so-called Graeco-buddhist school in Northwest India, a school which developed under the Great Kushans (1st - 3rd cent. A.D.) Starting with a much richer line of samples (196 pieces have been collected), it takes into account the nowadays available data about geology of Afghanistan and North Pakistan. The results confirm the homogeneity of the material used in Gandhara art, to which is related the group of schists from Hadda. This group includes nearly identical rocks - the only exceptions are related to Swat, with chloritite as a case apart. Opposite is the group of pieces from Kapiça, the plain of Begram close to Kabul.L'analyse reprend l'étude engagée en 1962-1963 par Liliane Courtois, sur les sculptures de cette école « gréco-bouddhique » du nord-ouest de l'Inde, qui s'épanouit au temps des grands Kouchans (Ier-IIIe siècle). Partant d'un corpus beaucoup plus développé (196 échantillons prélevés), elle bénéficie des données nouvelles, disponibles aujourd'hui, sur la géologie de l'Afghanistan et du nord de l'actuel Pakistan. Étude des terres, enduits et mortiers provenant de l'île de Failaka

Parmi les structures archéologiques découvertes sur l'île de Failaka et datant de l'âge du Bronze, une partie est constituée de mortiers, enduits ou plâtres. Ces matériaux ont été utilisés en revêtement de sol ou de murs, en comblement des joints de pierre, ou encore dans le fond des canalisations et caniveaux. L'objet de cette étude est la caractérisation d'un ensemble d'échantillons, représentatif des différents matériaux rencontrés sur le site. Cette caractérisation nous permettra de connaître les matières premières mises en œuvre ainsi que les techniques de préparation.
