    Intentionality: Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque

    Exploring intentionality from an externalist perspective, I distinguish three kinds of intentionality in the case of seeing, which I call transparent, translucent, and opaque respectively. I then extend the distinction from seeing to knowing, and then to believing. Having explicated the three-fold distinction, I then critically explore some important consequences that follow from granting that there are transparent and translucent intentional states and these intentional states are mental states. These consequences include: first, that existential opacity is neither the mark of intentionality nor of the mental; second, that Sellars has not shown that all intentionality is non-relational; third, that a key Quinean argument for semantic indeterminacy rests on a false premise; fourth, that perceptual experience is intentional on Alston’s Theory of Appearing; fifth, that either some mental causation is more than internal physiological causation or some mental states are epiphenomenal

    International audienceThis paper describes new superparamagnetic nanoparticles bearing dextran-grafted porphyrins with effective cellular uptake properties. They average 110 nm in diameter and are composed of a 5 nm iron oxide core coated with protoporphyrin grafted dextrans. These particles show good magnetic properties, are avidly incorporated into cultured cancer cell lines, and thus present a great potential for cellular imaging and photodynamic therapy applications

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.3390/f15020304Generally, soils of arid and semi-arid regions have low water retention properties due to high sand and low organic carbon contents. This study aimed at quantifying the effect of date palm-based organic amendments (OAs) on the water retention properties of two soils (sandy loam and silty loam), as well as the influence of sand supplementation (0.5–2 mm) on the magnitude of the effect of OAs. Different grain size distributions were obtained by adding sand to natural soils. For this purpose, sand was added to the two soils (1/3 and 2/3) and different soil-OA combinations were tested at a dose of 3% by mass: compost alone, biochar alone and a mixture of biochar and compost (50:50 in mass), in addition to unamended control soils. Soil water contents were measured at nine matric potentials ranging from the saturation to the permanent wilting point. Biochar was more efficient than compost at improving soil water retention. The effect of organic amendments on water retention increased with sand content. In most cases, soil water content values were significantly higher for biochar-amended soils than for unamended or compost-amended soils. The weakness of the effect of compost addition (if alone) was probably due to its properties and notably its high mineral content and electrical conductivity. Soil sand supplementation led to higher differences between the OA-amended soils and unamended soils. Changes in available water capacity reached +26% and +80% in a sandy loamy soil enriched with 2/3 sand and amended with compost and with biochar, respectively, compared to the unamended soil. These results show that sand content (and more generally, soil texture) influences the effect of OA application. Thus, the application of biochar from date palm residues in soil seems to be an effective solution to improve the water retention properties of coarse textured soils and contribute to optimizing the use of water resources in irrigated areas

    L'élevage transforme l'azote des végétaux en produits animaux et en rejette une partie sous forme de déjections, qui peuvent être utilisées comme engrais. Toutefois le développement des productions animales a conduit dans certains territoires à une concentration des apports et rejets d'azote, et une pollution des eaux, du sol et de l'atmosphère. Cette problématique est traitée depuis une vingtaine d'années par les politiques européennes. Que sait-on aujourd'hui de la dynamique des flux d'azote issus des élevages ? Quelles sont les pistes et les échelles pertinentes d'action pour réduire les émissions et leurs impacts sur l'environnement tout en préservant la compétitivité des productions animales ? Ces questions ont motivé de la part des ministères en charge de l'Agriculture et de l'Ecologie, au printemps 2010, une demande d'expertise scientifique collective auprès de l'INRA pour disposer d'un bilan des connaissances sur les différents flux d'azote associés aux activités d'élevage.     Clostridium botulinum type C, D, C/D, and D/C: An update

    Clostridium botulinum is the main causative agent of botulism, a neurological disease encountered in humans as well as animals. Nine types of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) have been described so far. Amongst these “toxinotypes,” the A, the B and E are the most frequently encountered in humans while the C, D, C/D and D/C are mostly affecting domestic and wild birds as well as cattle. In France for instance, many cases and outbreaks are reported in these animal species every year. However, underestimation is very likely at least for avifauna species where the detection of dead animals can be challenging. Knowledge about BoNTs C, D, C/D, and D/C and the diseases they cause in animals and humans is still scarce and unclear. Specifically, the potential role of animal botulism outbreaks in cattle and poultry as a source of human illness needs to be further assessed. In this narrative review, we present the current knowledge about toxinotypes C, D, C/D, and D/C in cattle and poultry with, amongst various other aspects, their epidemiological cycles. We also discuss the zoonotic potential of these toxinotypes and some possible ways of risk mitigation. An adapted and effective management of botulism outbreaks in livestock also requires a better understanding of these less common and known toxinotypes
