Crack propagation in pre-strained single layer graphene sheets
a b s t r a c t We use molecular dynamics simulations to delineate crack propagation speed as a function of the crack length and the axial prestrain in a single layer graphene sheet. A covalent bond between two carbon atoms is assumed to break when the bond length has been stretched by 100%. For a pristine single layer graphene sheet the maximum axial force is attained at a nominal axial strain of 15.5%. A pristine graphene sheet is first deformed in tension in the armchair direction to the desired value of the axial strain, and then one or two cracks are simultaneously inserted in it at central locations by breaking the bonds. Five such problems have been studied with four different values of the axial prestrain up to 15.3%. For each problem, crack-tip speeds are found to reach steady state values as the crack elongates. The steady state crack speed increases with an increase in the axial nominal prestrain. The crack propagation is found to be stable in the sense that the value of the J-integral increases with an increase in the crack length. For the same normalized crack length the value of the J-integral increases with an increase in the nominal axial prestrain
Presence of e-EDCs in surface water and effluents of pollution sources in Sai Gon and Dong Nai river basin
© 2016 This study aimed to assess the presence of estrogenic endocrine disrupting compounds (e-EDCs) including estriol, bisphenol A (BPA), atrazine (ATZ), octylphenol, octylphenol diethoxylate, octylphenol triethoxylate, nonylphenol, Nonylphenol triethoxylate (NPE3), nonylphenol diethoxylate (NPE2) and 17β-estradiol in: (i) Sai Gon and Dong Nai river waters which have been major raw water sources for drinking water supply for Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and neighbouring provinces, and (ii) water pollution sources located in their catchment basin. NPE3 and NPE2 were detected in most of the surface water samples. Concentrations of NPE3 were in a range of less than 5.9–235 ng L−1, whereas BPA was detected at significantly high concentrations in the dry season in canals in HCMC. In the upstream of Sai Gon and Dong Nai Rivers, ATZ concentrations were observed at water intake of water treatment plants served for HCMC water supply system. Similarly, high potential risk of NPE2 and NPE3 contamination at Phu Cuong Bridge near Hoa Phu water intake was identified. The significant correlation between NPE2, dissolved organic carbon and total nitrogen was found. Estrogenic equivalent or estrogenic activity of Sai Gon and Dong Nai Rivers was lower than those of the previous studies. Compared with other studies, e-EDCs of pollution in Sai Gon river basin were relatively low
Polyharmonic approximation on the sphere
The purpose of this article is to provide new error estimates for a popular
type of SBF approximation on the sphere: approximating by linear combinations
of Green's functions of polyharmonic differential operators. We show that the
approximation order for this kind of approximation is for
functions having smoothness (for up to the order of the
underlying differential operator, just as in univariate spline theory). This is
an improvement over previous error estimates, which penalized the approximation
order when measuring error in , p>2 and held only in a restrictive setting
when measuring error in , p<2.Comment: 16 pages; revised version; to appear in Constr. Appro
SHREC 2022 Track on Online Detection of Heterogeneous Gestures
This paper presents the outcomes of a contest organized to evaluate methods
for the online recognition of heterogeneous gestures from sequences of 3D hand
poses. The task is the detection of gestures belonging to a dictionary of 16
classes characterized by different pose and motion features. The dataset
features continuous sequences of hand tracking data where the gestures are
interleaved with non-significant motions. The data have been captured using the
Hololens 2 finger tracking system in a realistic use-case of mixed reality
interaction. The evaluation is based not only on the detection performances but
also on the latency and the false positives, making it possible to understand
the feasibility of practical interaction tools based on the algorithms
proposed. The outcomes of the contest's evaluation demonstrate the necessity of
further research to reduce recognition errors, while the computational cost of
the algorithms proposed is sufficiently low.Comment: Accepted on Computer & Graphics journa
TextANIMAR: Text-based 3D Animal Fine-Grained Retrieval
3D object retrieval is an important yet challenging task, which has drawn
more and more attention in recent years. While existing approaches have made
strides in addressing this issue, they are often limited to restricted settings
such as image and sketch queries, which are often unfriendly interactions for
common users. In order to overcome these limitations, this paper presents a
novel SHREC challenge track focusing on text-based fine-grained retrieval of 3D
animal models. Unlike previous SHREC challenge tracks, the proposed task is
considerably more challenging, requiring participants to develop innovative
approaches to tackle the problem of text-based retrieval. Despite the increased
difficulty, we believe that this task has the potential to drive useful
applications in practice and facilitate more intuitive interactions with 3D
objects. Five groups participated in our competition, submitting a total of 114
runs. While the results obtained in our competition are satisfactory, we note
that the challenges presented by this task are far from being fully solved. As
such, we provide insights into potential areas for future research and
improvements. We believe that we can help push the boundaries of 3D object
retrieval and facilitate more user-friendly interactions via vision-language
technologies.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2304.0573
Multimorbidity and its social determinants among older people in southern provinces, Vietnam
Background: Developing countries are poorly equipped for health issues related to ageing populations making multimorbidity challenging. As in Vietnam the focus tends to be on single conditions. Hence little is known about burden of multimorbidity. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and the determinants of multimorbidity among older people in Southern Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two provinces of Southern Vietnam with a sample of 2400 people aged 60 years and older. The presence of chronic disease was ascertained by medical examination done by physicians at commune health stations. Information on social and demographic factors was collected using structured questionnaire. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the factors associated with multimorbidity. Results: Nearly 40 % of older people had multimorbidity. Currently not working, and healthcare utilisation were associated with higher prevalence of multimorbidity. Living in urban areas and being literate were associated with lower prevalence of multimorbidity. Conclusion: The study found a high burden of multimorbidity among illiterate, especially those living in rural areas. This highlights the need for targeted community based programs aimed at reducing the burden of chronic disease
Molecular Gas in the z=1.2 Ultraluminous Merger GOODS J123634.53+621241.3
We report the detection of CO(2-1) emission from the z=1.2 ultraluminous
infrared galaxy (ULIRG) GOODS J123634.53+621241.3 (also known as the
sub-millimeter galaxy GN26). These observations represent the first discovery
of high-redshift CO emission using the new Combined Array for Research in
Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA). Of all high-redshift (z>1) galaxies within
the GOODS-North field, this source has the largest far-infrared (FIR) flux
observed in the Spitzer 70um and 160um bands. The CO redshift confirms the
optical identification of the source, and the bright CO(2-1) line suggests the
presence of a large molecular gas reservoir of about 7x10^10 M(sun). The
infrared-to-CO luminosity ratio of L(IR)/L'(CO) = 80+/-30 L(sun) (K Km/s
pc^2)^-1 is slightly smaller than the average ratio found in local ULIRGs and
high-redshift sub-millimeter galaxies. The short star-formation time scale of
about 70 Myr is consistent with a starburst associated with the merger event
and is much shorter than the time scales for spiral galaxies and estimates made
for high-redshift galaxies selected on the basis of their B-z and z-K colors.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
