Elliptical instability in hot Jupiter systems

Several studies have already considered the influence of tides on the evolution of systems composed of a star and a close-in companion to tentatively explain different observations such as the spin-up of some stars with hot Jupiters, the radius anomaly of short orbital period planets and the synchronization or quasi-synchronization of the stellar spin in some extreme cases. However, the nature of the mechanism responsible for the tidal dissipation in such systems remains uncertain. In this paper, we claim that the so-called elliptical instability may play a major role in these systems, explaining some systematic features present in the observations. This hydrodynamic instability, arising in rotating flows with elliptical streamlines, is suspected to be present in both planet and star of such systems, which are elliptically deformed by tides. The presence and the influence of the elliptical instability in gaseous bodies, such as stars or hot Jupiters, are most of the time neglected. In this paper, using numerical simulations and theoretical arguments, we consider several features associated to the elliptical instability in hot-Jupiter systems. In particular, the use of ad hoc boundary conditions makes it possible to estimate the amplitude of the elliptical instability in gaseous bodies. We also consider the influence of compressibility on the elliptical instability, and compare the results to the incompressible case. We demonstrate the ability for the elliptical instability to grow in the presence of differential rotation, with a possible synchronized latitude, provided that the tidal deformation and/or the rotation rate of the fluid are large enough. Moreover, the amplitude of the instability for a centrally-condensed mass of fluid is of the same order of magnitude as for an incompressible fluid for a given distance to the threshold of the instability. Finally, we show that the assumption of the elliptical instability being the main tidal dissipation process in eccentric inflated hot Jupiters and misaligned stars is consistent with current data.Comment: Icarus (2013) http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2012.12.01

La littérature canadienne‑anglaise pour la jeunnesse en traduction québécoise : analyse discursive de la politique éditoriale et de la réception critique des « Deux Solitudes/Jeunesse » (1980-1992)

La Littérature canadienne-anglaise pour la jeunesse en traduction québécoise: analyse discursive de la politique éditoriale et de la réception critique des « Deux Solitudes/Jeunesse » (1980-1992). La collection « Les Deux Solitudes/Jeunesse », publiée aux éditions Pierre Tisseyre à Montréal, est un cas exemplaire de traduction de littérature canadienne-anglaise pour la jeunesse en français, puisque c'est la seule qui se donne pour objectif de faire connaître au Québec les « oeuvres marquantes » du Canada anglais. L'étude fait l'historique de la collection (1980-1992) et analyse le discours justificatif et les choix éditoriaux. Le contenu discursif des textes traduits est comparé à celui des textes publiés en français au Québec durant la même période. La dernière partie examine la réception critique de la collection dans les revues spécialisées: la reconnaissance ou non du statut de traduction du texte, les paramètres d'évaluation utilisés par les critiques. La conclusion met l'accent sur une évolution, dans les choix de traduction comme dans la réception critique, du discours de la différence vers un discours de la communauté d'expérience des jeunes. Cette tendance assimilatrice est particulièrement perceptible dans la traduction des renvois intertextuels et des références culturelles, dont l'analyse est esquissée et qui sera poursuivie dans un autre cadre.English-Canadian Children's Literature translated in Québec: Discourse Analysis of the Editorial Policy and Critical Reception of the Series "Deux Solitudes/Jeunesse" (1980-1992) — "Deux Solitudes/Jeunesse," published by Pierre Tisseyre in Montréal, provides a particularly interesting case-study for the translation of English-Canadian children's literature into French, because it is the only series which has as its mandate to provide Québec with the most important works of English Canada. The article discusses the history of the series (1980-1992) and analyses the justifications for editorial choices. The content of the translated texts is compared to that of texts published in French in Québec during the same period. The last part examines the critical reception of the collection in specialized journals, in particular whether the text is recognized as a translation or not, and how evaluation criteria are used by the critics. The conclusion stresses the movement towards discourse — both in the choices of texts to translate and in critical reception — which underlines the common experience of young people, rather than the differences. The assimilative tendency is particularly noticeable in the translation of cultural and intertextual references

Identités régionales et évolutions génériques dans le roman policier italien contemporain

International audienceOwing to its last success, italian detective fiction is today confronted with the question of its renewal. Wavering between a reiteration of narrative ingredients and a minimization of a serial world, it comferms however the increasing importance of the scenery of the plot. The description of a particular territory gives traditionally to the ‘giallo' a specificity which concerns the straight relations that detective stories have with the referent. Representing a common denominator between several works or guaranteeing the taking root of the novel into reality, geographic references are naturally connected to the evolution of the genre. The concept of regional identity is still present in contemporary detective fiction. Nevertheless, it tends sometimes to be dissociated from the criminal dimension of the novel. It coincides from now with a multitude of approaches and goes to relativize the opportunity to give a subjective view of reality. In the same way, it focuses the attention on the literary creation and on the peculiar writer's searches.Fort de ses succès passés, le roman policier italien se trouve aujourd'hui à nouveau confronté à la problématique de son renouvellement. Oscillant entre réitération d'ingrédients narratifs dont le lecteur est coutumier et prise de distance par rapport à un univers sériel, il confirme néanmoins au fil des publications l'importance accordée aux décors de l'intrigue. L'évocation d'un site, d'un territoire donné confère traditionnellement au ‘giallo' une spécificité touchant aux relations étroites que la littérature policière entretient avec le référent. Qu'elles représentent un dénominateur commun entre plusieurs œuvres ou qu'elles garantissent l'ancrage du récit dans la réalité, les références géographiques se trouvent naturellement liées à la question de l'évolution du genre. La notion d'identité régionale est d'ailleurs toujours présente dans l'imaginaire policier contemporain. Cependant, elle tend parfois à se dissocier de la dimension criminelle du roman. Elle coïncide désormais avec une multitude d'approches et concourt ainsi à relativiser l'idée de restitution objective du réel.
