FMCW rail-mounted SAR: Porting spotlight SAR imaging from MATLAB to FPGA
In this work, a low-cost laptop-based radar platform derived from the MIT open courseware has been implemented. It can perform ranging, Doppler measurement and SAR imaging using MATLAB as the processor. In this work, porting the signal processing algorithms onto a FPGA platform will be addressed as well as differences between results obtained using MATLAB and those obtained using the FPGA platform. The target FPGA platforms were a Virtex6 DSP kit and Spartan3A starter kit, the latter was also low-cost to further reduce the cost for students to access radar technology

Documenting Antarctic Alteration of Eucrites
When meteorites were discovered in Antarctica, it was anticipated that terrestrial alteration would be at a minimum because of their deepfreeze storage where chemical reaction rates would be low. However, early compositional and petrologic studies established the presence of terrestrial alteration phases (e.g., [1, 2]). These were especially prevalent in chondrites because metal and troilite are most susceptible to terrestrial alteration [3]. Howardites, eucrites and diogenites (HEDs) are less prone to alteration because they have low abundances of metal and troilite. Nevertheless, investigations of HED meteorites document a wide array of mineralogical, compositional and isotopic effects of terrestrial alteration (e.g., [4-8]). Studies of the mineralogical effects of alteration [4] were done with old scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology which could only image small regions at a time. The micro-context of alteration phases was revealed, but larger-scale context was difficult to establish. Here we demonstrate the utility of wholethin-section X-ray mapping of eucrites by modern SEMs to document large-scale distributions of alteration materials which serve to evaluate sample freshness, highlight regions for detail study, and facilitate testing a hypothesis for alteration of eucrites [8
Expressive Stream Reasoning with Laser
An increasing number of use cases require a timely extraction of non-trivial
knowledge from semantically annotated data streams, especially on the Web and
for the Internet of Things (IoT). Often, this extraction requires expressive
reasoning, which is challenging to compute on large streams. We propose Laser,
a new reasoner that supports a pragmatic, non-trivial fragment of the logic
LARS which extends Answer Set Programming (ASP) for streams. At its core, Laser
implements a novel evaluation procedure which annotates formulae to avoid the
re-computation of duplicates at multiple time points. This procedure, combined
with a judicious implementation of the LARS operators, is responsible for
significantly better runtimes than the ones of other state-of-the-art systems
like C-SPARQL and CQELS, or an implementation of LARS which runs on the ASP
solver Clingo. This enables the application of expressive logic-based reasoning
to large streams and opens the door to a wider range of stream reasoning use

The impact of motor symptoms on self-reported anxiety in Parkinson's disease
OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is commonly endorsed in Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly affects quality of life. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) is often used but contains items that overlap with common PD motor symptoms (e.g., “hands trembling”). Because of these overlapping items, we hypothesized that PD motor symptoms would significantly affect BAI scores.
METHODS: One hundred non-demented individuals with PD and 74 healthy control participants completed the BAI. PD motor symptoms were assessed by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Factor analysis of the BAI assessed for a PD motor factor, and further analyses assessed how this factor affected BAI scores.
RESULTS: BAI scores were significantly higher for PD than NC. A five-item PD motor factor correlated with UPDRS observer-rated motor severity and mediated the PD-control difference on BAI total scores. An interaction occurred, whereby removal of the PD motor factor resulted in a significant reduction in BAI scores for PD relative to NC. The correlation between the BAI and UPDRS significantly declined when controlling for the PD motor factor.
CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that commonly endorsed BAI items may reflect motor symptoms such as tremor instead of, or in addition to, genuine mood symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of considering motor symptoms in the assessment of anxiety in PD and point to the need for selecting anxiety measures that are less subject to contamination by the motor effects of movement disorders.Published versio
