Sexual Orientation as Interpretation? Sexual Desires, Concepts, and Choice

Are sexual orientations freely chosen? The idea that someone's sexual orientation is not a choice is very influential in the mainstream LGBT political movement. But do we have good reasons to believe it is not a choice? Going against the orthodoxy, William Wilkerson has recently argued that sexual orientation is partly constituted by our interpretations of our own sexual desires, and we choose these interpretations, so sexual orientation is partly constituted by choice. In this paper I aim to examine the question of whether our interpretations of our own sexual desires are constitutive of our sexual orientations. I will argue that whereas Wilkerson's argument for the claim that sexual orientations are in part constituted by our chosen interpretations of our sexual desires is not sound, there are good reasons for endorsing a weaker claim, namely, that there are different but equally apt descriptions of the same sexual desires, depending on which concepts we have

Norms of Judgement, Naturalism, and Normativism about Content

David Papineau [1999. "Normativity and Judgement." Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society 73 (Sup. Vol.): 16-43.] argues that norms of judgement pose no special problem for naturalism, because all such norms of judgement are derived from moral or personal values. Papineau claims that this account of the normativity of judgement presupposes an account of content that places normativity outside the analysis of content, because in his view any accounts of content that place normativity inside the analysis of content cannot explain the normativity of judgement in the derivative way he proposes. Furthermore, he argues that normative accounts of content along those lines are independently problematic. In this paper I aim to respond to both objections, by arguing that normative accounts of content can be seen as naturalist accounts, even if they place normativity inside the analysis of content; and that normative accounts of content are compatible with a derivative account of norms of judgement of the sort Papineau advocates

Phenomenal concepts: Neither circular nor opaque

In this paper, I focus on an influential account of phenomenal concepts, the recognitional account, and defend it from some recent challenges. According to this account, phenomenal concepts are recognitional concepts that we use when we recognize experiences as 'another one of those.' Michael Tye has argued that this account is viciously circular because the relevant recognitional abilities involve descriptions of the form 'another experience of the same type,' which is also a phenomenal concept. Tye argues that we avoid the circularity worry if we explain the reference-fixing of phenomenal concepts in terms of dispositions to re-identify tokens of the same type without appealing to any further phenomenal concepts. However, he argues, this account is incompatible with the intuitive claim that phenomenal concepts seem to involve rich modes of presentation of their referents. Philip Goff and others have similarly argued that a recognitional account of phenomenal concepts would make phenomenal concepts opaque, that is, unable to reveal anything about their referents, which seems problematic. In this paper, I present a new version of the recognitional account that avoids the circularity worry without entailing that phenomenal concepts are opaque

'Woman' as a politically significant term: A solution to the puzzle

What does woman mean? According to two competing views, it can be seen as a sex term or as a gender term. Recently, Jennifer Saul has put forward a contextualist view, according to which woman can have different meanings in different contexts. The main motivation for this view seems to involve moral and political considerations, namely, that this view can do justice to the claims of trans women. Unfortunately, Saul argues, on further reflection the contextualist view fails to do justice to those moral and political claims that motivated the view in the first place. In this article I argue that there is a version of the contextualist view that can indeed capture those moral and political aims, and in addition, I use this case to illustrate an important and more general claim, namely, that moral and political considerations can be relevant to the descriptive project of finding out what certain politically significant terms actually mean

Una perspectiva innovadora en la formación de administradores: el desarrollo de las inteligencias intra e interpersonales (A new way in training of the managers: development of intra and inter-personal intelligence)

El artículo propone una nueva perspectiva en la formación de los administradores a partir de la identificación de las competencias directivas y de la importancia que en éstas tienen las que derivan de la inteligencia emocional. Después de destacar la importancia de la educación y de la formación en administración en el contexto universitario actual, se definen las competencias requeridas para la administración y se proponen algunas estrategias para mejorar la competitividad de los administradores en las organizaciones. This article lays out a new perspective for training of the managers from the point of view of leadership abilities as well as the emotional intelligence. After stressing the relevance of education and the training in management in the universities, the qualities required for management are noted, and some strategies for improving the competitiveness of the managers are proposed

Estudio comparado

El presente capítulo describe las vinculaciones entre la investigación científica para el estudio de la administración pública y el método comparativo. Se parte de la premisa de que cualquier disciplina científica requiere de un objeto de estudio único y diferente de los demás que integran las ciencias sociales y de que el estudio científico de un objeto, fenómeno o circunstancia requiere también de una metodología sustentada en bases científicas. Para ello se describen brevemente el método científico y el proceso de investigación científica, revisando los tipos de razonamiento y las principales técnicas e instrumentos coadyuvantes a la investigación administrativa. Por último se presentan las características del método comparativo, integrándose dos breves ejemplos de estudio aplicando dicho método al análisis de la competitividad institucional en el caso de tres megaciudades de México (Cd. De México, Guadalajara y Monterrey), y en el caso de 5 municipios urbanos de la zona de Monterrey

Análisis de políticas ambientales en torno a la ecología industrial en México y Cataluña

Castellano: En el marco del daño que ha causado el desarrollo económico al medio ambiente a partir de la Revolución Industrial, así como las consecuentes crisis económicas y sociales que han golpeado a las naciones a lo largo del siglo XX y comienzos del siglo XXI, surge la Ecología Industrial como una propuesta viable y atractiva para que uno de los motores principales de dicho desarrollo como lo es el sector industrial, encuentre en ella una alternativa sustentable con beneficios tanto ambientales como económicos y sociales; intentando así transformarla en una herramienta para un Desarrollo Humano Sustentable. Es bajo esta premisa que el presente trabajo busca analizar y comparar las políticas y experiencias que se han implementado en México y Cataluña en materia ambiental con la intención de detectar aquellas que fomentan o impiden las sinergias propuestas por la Ecología Industrial, así como el impacto que éstas pudieran tener en la creación de proyectos como los parques eco-industriales que de ella emanan. La estructura del trabajo consiste en tres secciones. En la primera se hará una revisión bibliográfica de los temas centrales en la investigación: El problema del cambio climático y el papel del modelo de desarrollo económico, la sustentabilidad y los factores que llevan a la introducción de la Ecología Industrial, así como una revisión de la historia de la Ecología industrial en México y Cataluña. La segunda sección será para analizar las políticas implementadas en tales sitios y determinar el efecto positivo o negativo que tienen a la hora de crear proyectos que promuevan la Ecología Industrial como es el caso de los parques eco-industriales; analizaremos también algunos casos de estudio de proyectos completados y las consecuencias que pudieran haber traído a sus comunidades y entorno. Finalment es compararan les experiències i s’ analitzarem els resultats de la recerca.English: In the context of the damage caused to the environment by the economic development since the Industrial Revolution, as well as the consequent social and economic crises that struck n ations during the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty first, the Industrial Ecology emerges as a viable and appealing proposal for one of the main motors of said development such as the industrial sector, to come across a sustainable alternat ive with environmental, economic and social benefits; in an attempt to turn it into a tool for Sustainable Human Development. It is under this premise that the present work tries to analyze and compare the policies and experiences implemented in Mexico and Catalonia in environmental matters with the intention to pinpoint those which encourage or prevent the synergies proposed by the Industrial Ecology, as well as the impact these could have in the creation of projects such as eco - industrial parks that ar ise from it. The structure of the paper consists in three main sections. In the first one, a bibliographic review will be made of the central topics of the investigation: the problem of climate change and the role of the economic development model in it, sustainability and the factors that lead to the introduction of the Industrial Ecology, as well as a review in the history of Industrial Ecology in Mexico and Catalonia. The second section will be to analyze the policies implemented in such locations and d etermine the positive or negative impact they have when trying to create projects that promote Industrial Ecology as it is seen in eco - industrial parks; also, some case studies will be analyzed of completed projects with the consequences that they might ha ve brought to their surroundings and communities. Finally both experiences will be compared and the results of the research will be discussed

De la Democracia participativa al Gobierno Abierto: hacia una delimitación conceptual.

This article is the product of a literature review, which objective was to reflect on the concept of democracy as a form of political participation of society as a whole. The method of analysis was applied, with a qualitative approach, non-experimental design, under a transversal documentary-bibliographic level. After the documentary review, it was found that: due to the profound transformations that are experienced worldwide as a result of the different social, political and economic movements, they induce a serene and acute reflection on the best ways to organize government institutions and especially the citizen’s role in political systems. It is concluded that the economic, social and technological transformations have caused transcendental reforms in the government model, thus affecting the functioning of modern democracies.El presente artículo es producto de una revisión bibliográfica, cuyo objetivo consistió en reflexionar sobre el concepto de democracia como una forma de participación política de la sociedad en su conjunto. Se aplicó el método de análisis, con un enfoque cualitativo, diseño no experimental, bajo un nivel documental-bibliográfico transversal. Tras la revisión documental se encontró que: debido a las profundas transformaciones que se viven a nivel mundial producto de los distintos movimientos sociales, políticos y económicos, inducen a la reflexión serena y aguda sobre las mejores formas de organizar las instituciones gubernamentales y sobre todo el papel del ciudadano en los sistemas políticos. En el presente capitulo se abordará de manera general.  Se concluye que las transformaciones económicas, sociales y tecnológicas han provocado reformas trascendentales en el modelo de gobierno, afectando de esta manera el funcionamiento de las democracias modernas

Keynesianism, PostKeynesianism and Newkeynesianism: ¿Three different doctrines just one real theory?

During the seventies, Keynesianism faced the most critical decade. It was characterized by some deep critics to the "General Theory", due to the ausence of strong microfoundations and a overdimensionated importance of demand shocks over the role of supply shock in economic theory. Eighties unleash the beginning of a new authors stream; it has as a main purpose to develop an answer to all those critics made during the past decade. In such way, a new stream named the newkeynesianism had appeared. On the other side, the Postkeynesianism seemed to be far from the critics.
