Impact of Agency Costs on Firm Performance: Evidence from Vietnam
An assumption in agency costs theory is that agency costs can exert a negative impact on firm performance. In this study, we examine the impact of agency costs on firm performance of Vietnamese listed companies. Our sample includes 736 companies in Vietnam during the period om 2010 to 2015. We find that agency costs exert a negative impact on firm performance. Our results are robust to alternative econometric models, including an instrumental variables technique and a system generalized method of moment model. In addition, we show that a debt instrument can be a useful tool to reduce the negative impact of agency costs on firm performance
A multi-dimensional free market and income inequality in developing Asia: How does the quality of governance matter?
This paper empirically examines how a free market, a governance quality, and their interaction simultaneously affect income inequality in 23 Asian developing countries over the period 2000-2019. Especially, different dimensions of a free market proxied by various components of economic freedom are analysed. Results show that the overall economic freedom and three of its components including labour freedom, trade freedom, and investment freedom reduce income inequality; but other components including business freedom, monetary freedom, and financial freedom widen income inequality. Meanwhile, the governance quality not only decreases income inequality, but also intensifies the beneficial impacts of the overall economic freedom and those respective components of economic freedom on income equality. Notably, at certain thresholds of governance quality, the detrimental impacts of business freedom, monetary freedom, and financial freedom on income equality turn into the advantageous ones. The findings consolidate the appropriate combination of free market with specific dimensions and the governance quality in boosting the equality of income distribution in Asian developing countries
Symmetry-invariant quantum machine learning force fields
Machine learning techniques are essential tools to compute efficient, yet
accurate, force fields for atomistic simulations. This approach has recently
been extended to incorporate quantum computational methods, making use of
variational quantum learning models to predict potential energy surfaces and
atomic forces from ab initio training data. However, the trainability and
scalability of such models are still limited, due to both theoretical and
practical barriers. Inspired by recent developments in geometric classical and
quantum machine learning, here we design quantum neural networks that
explicitly incorporate, as a data-inspired prior, an extensive set of
physically relevant symmetries. We find that our invariant quantum learning
models outperform their more generic counterparts on individual molecules of
growing complexity. Furthermore, we study a water dimer as a minimal example of
a system with multiple components, showcasing the versatility of our proposed
approach and opening the way towards larger simulations. Our results suggest
that molecular force fields generation can significantly profit from leveraging
the framework of geometric quantum machine learning, and that chemical systems
represent, in fact, an interesting and rich playground for the development and
application of advanced quantum machine learning tools.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Vietnamese children and adults' perceptions of genealogy's role in family tradition education
When one studies their ancestors, they acquire information and documentation about their marriages,
births, and deaths as far back as possible, through their parents, grandparents, and great
grandparents, as well as information and documentation about their children and grandchildren. In
particular, the purpose of this study is to examine the perspectives of Vietnamese children and adults
regarding the significance of genealogy in traditional family education in the country of Vietnam. One
hundred and ninety-nine persons participated in the survey. In a questionnaire, they answered eight
questions regarding the lives of their forefathers and foremothers. When this research came to a close,
it was determined that the perceptions of Vietnamese children and adults about the function of
genealogy in traditional family education fell into one of two categories: "below average" and "above
average." All of the findings from this research are critical in terms of establishing family traditions in
the minds of future generations
New Advances in the Treatment of Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterised by an extremely poor overall survival (OS) compared to other solid tumours. As the incidence of the disease is rising and the treatment options are limited, PDAC is projected to be the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States by 2030. A majority of patients are not eligible for curative resection at the time of diagnosis, and those that are resected will often relapse within the first few years after surgery. Summary: Until recently, the nucleoside analogue gemcitabine has been the standard of care for patients with non-resectable PDAC with only marginal effects on OS. In 2011, the gemcitabine-free FOLFIRINOX regimen (folinic acid, fluorouracil, irinotecan and oxaliplatin) showed a significant survival advantage for patients with metastatic PDAC in a phase III trial. In 2013, the Metastatic Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Trial phase III trial with nano-formulated albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) in combination with gemcitabine also resulted in a significant survival extension compared to gemcitabine monotherapy. However, both intensified therapy regimens show a broad spectrum of side effects and patients need to be carefully selected for the most appropriate protocol. Key Message: In this study, recent advances in the chemotherapeutic options available to treat metastatic PDAC and their implications for today's treatment choices are reviewed
Habenaria diphylla (Nimmo) Dalzell (Orchidaceae), new record for the flora of Vietnam
Habenaria diphylla (Nimmo) Dalzell is reported for the first time as a new discovery for the flora of Vietnam based on the specimens collected in Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. The present study provided the detailed characteristics of the species including detailed photographs of the morphological characteristics, the cross section of the leaf, inflorescence axis and root. Furthermore, the information about the species, including distribution, habitat, ecology and conservation status were also provided
Atomic position localization via dual measurement
We study localization of atomic position when a three-level atom interacts
with a quantized standing-wave field in the Ramsey interferometer setup. Both
the field quadrature amplitude and the atomic internal state are measured to
obtain the atomic position information. It is found that this dual measurement
scheme produces an interference pattern superimposed on a diffraction-like
pattern in the atomic position distribution, where the former pattern
originates from the state-selective measurement and the latter from the field
measurement. The present scheme results in a better resolution in the position
localization than the field-alone measurement schemes. We also discuss the
measurement-correlated mechanical action of the standing-wave field on the atom
in the light of Popper's test.Comment: 6.5 pages and 5 figure
