Polymorphic systems with arrays : decidability and undecidability
Polymorphic systems with arrays (PSAs) is a general class of nondeterministic reactive systems. A PSA is polymorphic in the sense that it depends on a signature, which consists of a number of type variables, and a number of symbols whose types can be built from the type variables. Some of the state variables of a PSA can be arrays, which are functions from one type to another. We present several new decidability and undecidability results for parameterised control-state reachability problems on subclasses of PSAs
On model checking data-independent systems with arrays without reset
A system is data-independent with respect to a data type X iff the operations
it can perform on values of type X are restricted to just equality testing. The
system may also store, input and output values of type X. We study model
checking of systems which are data-independent with respect to two distinct
type variables X and Y, and may in addition use arrays with indices from X and
values from Y . Our main interest is the following parameterised model-checking
problem: whether a given program satisfies a given temporal-logic formula for
all non-empty nite instances of X and Y . Initially, we consider instead the
abstraction where X and Y are infinite and where partial functions with finite
domains are used to model arrays. Using a translation to data-independent
systems without arrays, we show that the u-calculus model-checking problem is
decidable for these systems. From this result, we can deduce properties of all
systems with finite instances of X and Y . We show that there is a procedure
for the above parameterised model-checking problem of the universal fragment of
the u-calculus, such that it always terminates but may give false negatives. We
also deduce that the parameterised model-checking problem of the universal
disjunction-free fragment of the u-calculus is decidable. Practical motivations
for model checking data-independent systems with arrays include verification of
memory and cache systems, where X is the type of memory addresses, and Y the
type of storable values. As an example we verify a fault-tolerant memory
interface over a set of unreliable memories.Comment: Appeared in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming, vol. 4, no.

Solving for Micro- and Macro- Scale Electrostatic Configurations Using the Robin Hood Algorithm
We present a novel technique by which highly-segmented electrostatic
configurations can be solved. The Robin Hood method is a matrix-inversion
algorithm optimized for solving high density boundary element method (BEM)
problems. We illustrate the capabilities of this solver by studying two
distinct geometry scales: (a) the electrostatic potential of a large volume
beta-detector and (b) the field enhancement present at surface of electrode
nano-structures. Geometries with elements numbering in the O(10^5) are easily
modeled and solved without loss of accuracy. The technique has recently been
expanded so as to include dielectrics and magnetic materials.Comment: 40 pages, 20 figure
Surface acoustic wave modulation of single photon emission from GaN/InGaN nanowire quantum dots
On-chip quantum information processing requires controllable quantum light
sources that can be operated on-demand at high-speeds and with the possibility
of in-situ control of the photon emission wavelength and its optical
polarization properties. Here, we report on the dynamic control of the optical
emission from core-shell GaN/InGaN nanowire (NW) heterostructures using radio
frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The SAWs are excited on the surface of
a piezoelectric lithium niobate crystal equipped with a SAW delay line onto
which the NWs were mechanically transferred. Luminescent quantum dot (QD)-like
exciton localization centers induced by compositional fluctuations within the
InGaN nanoshell were identified using stroboscopic micro-photoluminescence
(micro-PL) spectroscopy. They exhibit narrow and almost fully linearly
polarized emission lines in the micro-PL spectra and a pronounced anti-bunching
signature of single photon emission in the photon correlation experiments. When
the nanowire is perturbed by the propagating SAW, the embedded QD is
periodically strained and its excitonic transitions are modulated by the
acousto-mechanical coupling, giving rise to a spectral fine-tuning within a
~1.5 meV bandwidth at the acoustic frequency of ~330 MHz. This outcome can be
further combined with spectral detection filtering for temporal control of the
emitted photons. The effect of the SAW piezoelectric field on the QD charge
population and on the optical polarization degree is also observed. The
advantage of the acousto-optoelectric over other control schemes is that it
allows in-situ manipulation of the optical emission properties over a wide
frequency range (up to GHz frequencies).Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1902.0791

Inhibition of a viral enzyme by a small-molecule dimer disruptor.
We identified small-molecule dimer disruptors that inhibit an essential dimeric protease of human Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) by screening an alpha-helical mimetic library. Next, we synthesized a second generation of low-micromolar inhibitors with improved potency and solubility. Complementary methods including size exclusion chromatography and 1H-13C HSQC titration using selectively labeled 13C-Met samples revealed that monomeric protease is enriched in the presence of inhibitor. 1H-15N HSQC titration studies mapped the inhibitor binding site to the dimer interface, and mutagenesis studies targeting this region were consistent with a mechanism where inhibitor binding prevents dimerization through the conformational selection of a dynamic intermediate. These results validate the interface of herpesvirus proteases and other similar oligomeric interactions as suitable targets for the development of small-molecule inhibitors
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering probes the electron-phonon coupling in the spin-liquid kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the N K edge reveals clearly resolved
harmonics of the anion plane vibrations in the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3
spin-liquid insulator. Tuning the incoming light energy at the K edge of two
distinct N sites permits to excite different sets of phonon modes. Cyanide CN
stretching mode is selected at the edge of the ordered N sites which are more
strongly connected to the BEDT-TTF molecules, while positionally disordered N
sites show multi-mode excitation. Combining measurements with calculations on
an anion plane cluster permits to estimate the sitedependent electron-phonon
coupling of the modes related to nitrogen excitation
Logical-mathematical Evaluation Model of Blast-furnace Melting Operation
The logical-mathematical evaluation model of blast-furnace melting operation is represented. The model provides an opportunity to evaluate the normal operation mode of blast furnace and further deviations from this mode such as overdeveloped gas flows (peripheral and central), violation of thermal melting conditions (hot and cold course of melt), violation of smooth descent of burned materials in the furnace (tight furnace operation, higher and lower suspension of burden). The functional capabilities of developed software are represented.

Visualising disease progression on multiple variables with vector plots and path plots.
BACKGROUND: It is often desirable to observe how a disease progresses over time in individual patients, rather than graphing group averages; and since multiple outcomes are typically recorded on each patient, it would be advantageous to visualise disease progression on multiple variables simultaneously. METHODS: A variety of vector plots and a path plot have been developed for this purpose, and data from a longitudinal Huntington's disease study are used to illustrate the utility of these graphical methods for exploratory data analysis. RESULTS: Initial and final values for three outcome variables can be easily visualised per patient, along with the change in these variables over time. In addition to the disease trajectory, the path individual patients take from initial to final observation can be traced. Categorical variables can be coded with different types of vectors or paths (e.g. different colours, line types, line thickness) and separate panels can be used to include further categorical or continuous variables, allowing clear visualisation of further information for each individual. In addition, summary statistics such as mean vectors, bivariate interquartile ranges and convex polygons can be included to assist in interpreting trajectories, comparing groups, and detecting multivariate outliers. CONCLUSION: Vector and path plots are useful graphical methods for exploratory data analysis when individual-level information on multiple variables over time is desired, and they have several advantages over plotting each variable separately.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Site fidelity of Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829Â at Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy; Ionian Sea)
Lack of detailed knowledge on ecological niche, life cycles, spatial distribution, reproductive biology and space use strongly affects the selection of useful tools and measures in the conservation of threatened marine species. Especially for sedentary and slow species, behaviour and movement capacities are supposed to be the most important functional traits. Indeed, behavioural variability concerning available space and the close presence of individuals is considered a crucial trait for the population dynamics assessments, especially when disturbances of various causes are present in the environment. The present study aimed to investigate the site fidelity and degree of movement of Hippocampus guttulatus, an emblematic and threatened Mediterranean seahorse species. With this aim, a number of seahorses were tagged and monitored throughout two years within a limited area of the lagoon of Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy). The studied individuals were initially morphometrically measured for size, sex and life-cycle stage and subsequently monitored through repeated four-month surveys each year. Obtained results indicated high site fidelity regardless of habitat type. Movement pattern was in line with the data on congeneric species, although values were slightly higher. The analyses showed differences in movement degree among different sexes and life-cycle stages and indicated greater mobility of adult females compared to males and juveniles. The investigated parameters showed a great variability suggesting that even small-scale environmental factors can influence the species mobility. Finally, a change in the population structure has been observed, with the loss of large individuals in 2016 and reduced recruitment in 2017. These findings indicated the possible presence of stressors that could lead to the alteration of the seahorse population at Mar Piccolo of Taranto
