    Sunspot motion, flares and type III bursts in McMath 11482

    We have studied a series of flares in McMath 11482, 1972 August 19–22, with particular reference to the basis for the flares and comparison with dekameter radio data. We find that the flares were produced by rapid (∼ 1000 km h⁻¹) westward motion of a large new p spot. Many flares occur just in front of the spot, and they cease when the motion stops. All flares occurring in front of the spot produce type III bursts, while even strong flares elsewhere in the region produce little or no type III. The time of type III emission agrees perfectly with the start of the Hα flare. Thus type III bursts are only produced in favorable configurations. Simultaneous K-line movies are compared with Hα films and show little difference in flare appearance

    The Role of Kinetic Energy Flux in the Convective Urca Process

    The previous analysis of the convective Urca neutrino loss process in degenerate, convective, quasi-static, carbon-burning cores by Barkat and Wheeler omitted specific consideration of the role of the kinetic energy flux. The arguments of Barkat and Wheeler that steady-state composition gradients exist are correct, but chemical equilibrium does not result in net cooling. Barkat and Wheeler included a "work" term that effectively removed energy from the total energy budget that could only have come from the kinetic energy, which must remain positive. Consideration of the kinetic energy in the thermodynamics of the convective Urca process shows that the convective Urca neutrinos reduce the rate of increase of entropy that would otherwise be associated with the input of nuclear energy and slow down the convective current, but, unlike the "thermal" Urca process do not reduce the entropy or temperature.Comment: 16 pages, AAS LaTex, in press, Astrophysical Journal, September 20, Vol 52

    Modelling and performance of Nb SIS mixers in the 1.3 mm and 0.8 mm bands

    We describe the modeling and subsequent improvements of SIS waveguide mixers for the 200-270 and 330-370 GHz bands (Blundell, Carter, and Gundlach 1988, Carter et al 1991). These mixers are constructed for use in receivers on IRAM radiotelescopes on Pico Veleta (Spain, Sierra Nevada) and Plateau de Bure (French Alps), and must meet specific requirements. The standard reduced height waveguide structure with suspended stripline is first analyzed and a model is validated through comparison with scale model and working scale measurements. In the first step, the intrinsic limitations of the standard mixer structure are identified, and the parameters are optimized bearing in mind the radioastronomical applications. In the second step, inductive tuning of the junctions is introduced and optimized for minimum noise and maximum bandwidth. In the 1.3 mm band, a DSB receiver temperature of less than 110 K (minimum 80 K) is measured from 180 through 260 GHz. In the 0.8 mm band, a DSB receiver temperature of less than 250 K (minimum 175 K) is obtained between 325 and 355 GHz. All these results are obtained with room-temperature optics and a 4 GHz IF chain having a 500 MHz bandwidth and a noise temperature of 14 K

    1420 MHz Continuum Absorption Towards Extragalactic Sources in the Galactic Plane

    We present a 21-cm emission-absorption study towards extragalactic sources in the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). We have analyzed HI spectra towards 437 sources with S > 150 mJy, giving us a source density of 0.6 sources per square degree at arcminute resolution. We present the results of a first analysis of the HI temperatures, densities, and feature statistics. Particular emphasis is placed on 5 features with observed spin temperatures below 40 K. We find most spin temperatures in the range from 40 K to 300 K. A simple HI two-component model constrains the bulk of the cold component to temperatures (T_c) between 40 K and 100 K. T_c peaks in the Perseus arm region and clearly drops off with Galactocentric radius, R, beyond that. The HI density follows this trend, ranging from a local value of 0.4 cm^{-3} to less than 0.1 cm^{-3} at R = 20 kpc. We find that HI emission alone on average traces about 75% of the total HI column density, as compared to the total inferred by the emission and absorption. Comparing the neutral hydrogen absorption to CO emission no correlation is found in general, but all strong CO emission is accompanied by a visible HI spectral feature.     Intricate visibility effects from resolved emission of young stellar objects: the case of MWC158 observed with the VLTI

    In the course of our VLTI young stellar object PIONIER imaging program, we have identified a strong visibility chromatic dependency that appeared in certain sources. This effect, rising value of visibilities with decreasing wavelengths over one base, is also present in previous published and archival AMBER data. For Herbig AeBe stars, the H band is generally located at the transition between the star and the disk predominance in flux for Herbig AeBe stars. We believe that this phenomenon is responsible for the visibility rise effect. We present a method to correct the visibilities from this effect in order to allow "gray" image reconstruction software, like Mira, to be used. In parallel we probe the interest of carrying an image reconstruction in each spectral channel and then combine them to obtain the final broadband one. As an illustration we apply these imaging methods to MWC158, a (possibly Herbig) B[e] star intensively observed with PIONIER. Finally, we compare our result with a parametric model fitted onto the data.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Roche-lobe filling factor of mass-transferring red giants - the PIONIER view

    Using the PIONIER visitor instrument that combines the light of the four Auxiliary Telescopes of ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer, we measure precisely the diameters of several symbiotic and related stars: HD 352, HD 190658, V1261 Ori, ER Del, FG Ser, and AG Peg. These diameters - in the range of 0.6 to 2.3 milli-arcseconds - are used to assess the filling factor of the Roche lobe of the mass-losing giants and provide indications on the nature of the ongoing mass transfer. We also provide the first spectroscopic orbit of ER Del, based on CORAVEL and HERMES/Mercator observations. The system is found to have an eccentric orbit with a period of 5.7 years. In the case of the symbiotic star FG Ser, we find that the diameter is changing by 13% over the course of 41 days, while the observations of HD 352 are indicative of an elongation. Both these stars are found to have a Roche filling factor close to 1, as is most likely the case for HD 190658 as well, while the three other stars have factors below 0.5-0.6.     Carbon-poor stellar cores as supernova progenitors

    Exploring stellar models which ignite carbon off-center (in the mass range of about 1.05 - 1.25 Msun, depending on the carbon mass fraction) we find that they may present an interesting SN I progenitor scenario, since whereas in the standard scenario runaway always takes place at the same density of about 2 X 10^9 gr/cm^3, in our case, due to the small amount of carbon ignited, we get a whole range of densities from 1 X 10^9 up to 6 X 10^9 gr/cm^3. These results could contribute in resolving the emerging recognition that at least some diversity among SNe I exists, since runaway at various central densities is expected to yield various outcomes in terms of the velocities and composition of the ejecta, which should be modeled and compared to observations.Comment: 49 pages, 20 figure
