Tarski monoids: Matui's spatial realization theorem
We introduce a class of inverse monoids, called Tarski monoids, that can be
regarded as non-commutative generalizations of the unique countable, atomless
Boolean algebra. These inverse monoids are related to a class of etale
topological groupoids under a non-commutative generalization of classical Stone
duality and, significantly, they arise naturally in the theory of dynamical
systems as developed by Matui. We are thereby able to reinterpret a theorem of
Matui on a class of \'etale groupoids as an equivalent theorem about a class of
Tarski monoids: two simple Tarski monoids are isomorphic if and only if their
groups of units are isomorphic. The inverse monoids in question may also be
viewed as countably infinite generalizations of finite symmetric inverse
monoids. Their groups of units therefore generalize the finite symmetric groups

First detection of a low-mass stellar halo around the young open cluster Eta Chamaeleontis
We have identified several lithium-rich low-mass (0.08<M<0.3 Msun) stars
within 5.5 deg of the young open cluster Eta Chamaeleontis, nearly four times
the radius of previous search efforts. Of these stars we propose 4 new probable
cluster members, and 3 possible members requiring further investigation. These
findings are consistent with a dynamical origin for the current configuration
of the cluster, without the need to invoke an abnormal Initial Mass Function
deficient in low-mass objects. Candidates were selected on the basis of DENIS
and 2MASS photometry, NOMAD astrometry and extensive follow-up spectroscopy.Comment: 5 Pages. 5 Figures and 1 Table. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Troubling Vulnerability: Designing with LGBT Young People's Ambivalence Towards Hate Crime Reporting
HCI is increasingly working with ?vulnerable? people yet there is a danger that the label of vulnerability can alienate and stigmatize the people such work aims to support. We report our study investigating the application of interaction design to increase rates of hate crime reporting amongst Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender young people. During design-led workshops participants expressed ambivalence towards reporting. While recognizing their exposure to hate crime they simultaneously rejected ascription as victim as implied in the act of reporting. We used visual communication design to depict the young people?s ambivalent identities and contribute insights on how these fail and succeed to account for the intersectional, fluid and emergent nature of LGBT identities through the design research process. We argue that by producing ambiguous designed texts, alongside conventional qualitative data, we ?trouble? our design research narratives as a tactic to disrupt static and reductive understandings of vulnerability within HCI
Episodic disk accretion in the halo of the 'old' Pre-Main Sequence cluster Eta Chamaeleontis
We present multi-epoch medium-resolution observations of two M4.5 candidate
members in the halo of the ~8 Myr Eta Chamaeleontis open cluster. Over six
months of observations both stars exhibited variations in their H-alpha line
profiles on timescales of days to months, with at least one episode of
substantial activity attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. We
derive an accretion rate ~10^-8.7 Msun/yr for this event, with a rate of
~10^-10.6 Msun/yr in quiescence. Episodic accretion like that observed here
means existing surveys of accreting Weak-lined T-Tauri Stars in young clusters
are likely incomplete and that gas dissipation timescales calculated from the

Renal fibrosis in feline chronic kidney disease: known mediators and mechanisms of injury
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common medical condition of ageing cats. In most cases the underlying aetiology is unknown, but the most frequently reported pathological diagnosis is renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Renal fibrosis, characterised by extensive accumulation of extra-cellular matrix within the interstitium, is thought to be the final common pathway for all kidney diseases and is the pathological lesion best correlated with function in both humans and cats. As a convergent pathway, renal fibrosis provides an ideal target for the treatment of CKD and knowledge of the underlying fibrotic process is essential for the future development of novel therapies. There are many mediators and mechanisms of renal fibrosis reported in the literature, of which only a few have been investigated in the cat. This article reviews the process of renal fibrosis and discusses the most commonly cited mediators and mechanisms of progressive renal injury, with particular focus on the potential significance to feline CKD
Quantum oscillations in topological superconductor candidate CuBiSe
Quantum oscillations are generally studied to resolve the electronic
structure of topological insulators. In CuBiSe, the prime
candidate of topological superconductors, quantum oscillations are still not
observed in magnetotransport measurement. However, using torque magnetometry,
quantum oscillations (the de Hass - van Alphen effect) were observed in
CuBiSe . The doping of Cu in BiSe increases the
carrier density and the effective mass without increasing the scattering rate
or decreasing the mean free path. In addition, the Fermi velocity remains the
same in CuBiSe as that in BiSe. Our results imply that
the insertion of Cu does not change the band structure of BiSe.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Einstein Manifolds As Yang-Mills Instantons
It is well-known that Einstein gravity can be formulated as a gauge theory of
Lorentz group where spin connections play a role of gauge fields and Riemann
curvature tensors correspond to their field strengths. One can then pose an
interesting question: What is the Einstein equations from the gauge theory
point of view? Or equivalently, what is the gauge theory object corresponding
to Einstein manifolds? We show that the Einstein equations in four dimensions
are precisely self-duality equations in Yang-Mills gauge theory and so Einstein
manifolds correspond to Yang-Mills instantons in SO(4) = SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R
gauge theory. Specifically, we prove that any Einstein manifold with or without
a cosmological constant always arises as the sum of SU(2)_L instantons and
SU(2)_R anti-instantons. This result explains why an Einstein manifold must be
stable because two kinds of instantons belong to different gauge groups,
instantons in SU(2)_L and anti-instantons in SU(2)_R, and so they cannot decay
into a vacuum. We further illuminate the stability of Einstein manifolds by

Diagnosing faults in autonomous robot plan execution
A major requirement for an autonomous robot is the capability to diagnose faults during plan execution in an uncertain environment. Many diagnostic researches concentrate only on hardware failures within an autonomous robot. Taking a different approach, the implementation of a Telerobot Diagnostic System that addresses, in addition to the hardware failures, failures caused by unexpected event changes in the environment or failures due to plan errors, is described. One feature of the system is the utilization of task-plan knowledge and context information to deduce fault symptoms. This forward deduction provides valuable information on past activities and the current expectations of a robotic event, both of which can guide the plan-execution inference process. The inference process adopts a model-based technique to recreate the plan-execution process and to confirm fault-source hypotheses. This technique allows the system to diagnose multiple faults due to either unexpected plan failures or hardware errors. This research initiates a major effort to investigate relationships between hardware faults and plan errors, relationships which were not addressed in the past. The results of this research will provide a clear understanding of how to generate a better task planner for an autonomous robot and how to recover the robot from faults in a critical environment
Chemical analysis of charged Li/SO(sub)2 cells
The initial focus of the program was to confirm that charging can indeed result in explosions and constitute a significant safety problem. Results of this initial effort clearly demonstrated that cells do indeed explode on charge and that charging does indeed constitute a real and severe safety problem. The results of the effort to identify the chemical reactions involved in and responsible for the observed behavior are described
Two universal results for Wilson loops at strong coupling
We present results for Wilson loops in strongly coupled gauge theories. The
loops may be taken around an arbitrarily shaped contour and in any field theory
with a dual IIB geometry of the form M x S^5. No assumptions about
supersymmetry are made. The first result uses D5 branes to show how the loop in
any antisymmetric representation is computed in terms of the loop in the
fundamental representation. The second result uses D3 branes to observe that
each loop defines a rich sequence of operators associated with minimal surfaces
in S^5. The action of these configurations are all computable. Both results
