    BIBS: A Lecture Webcasting System

    The Berkeley Internet Broadcasting System (BIBS) is a lecture webcasting system developed and operated by the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center. The system offers live remote viewing and on-demand replay of course lectures using streaming audio and video over the Internet. During the Fall 2000 semester 14 classes were webcast, including several large lower division classes, with a total enrollment of over 4,000 students. Lectures were played over 15,000 times per month during the semester. The primary use of the webcasts is to study for examinations. Students report they watch BIBS lectures because they did not understand material presented in lecture, because they wanted to review what the instructor said about selected topics, because they missed a lecture, and/or because they had difficulty understanding the speaker (e.g., non-native English speakers). Analysis of various survey data suggests that more than 50% of the students enrolled in some large classes view lectures and that as many as 75% of the lectures are played by members of the Berkeley community. Faculty attitudes vary about the virtues of lecture webcasting. Some question the use of this technology while others believe it is a valuable aid to education. Further study is required to accurately assess the pedagogical impact that lecture webcasts have on student learning

    Higher order residual analysis for nonlinear time series with autoregressive correlation structures

    The paper considers nonlinear time series whose second order autocorrelations satisfy autoregressive Yule-Walker equations. The usual linear residuals are then uncorrelated, but not independent, as would be the case for linear autoregressive processes. Two such types of nonlinear model are treated in some detail; random coefficient autoregression and multiplicative autoregression. The proposed analysis involves crosscorrelation of the usual linear residuals and their squares. This function is obtained for the two types of model considered, and allows differentiation between models with the same autocorrelation structure in the same class. For the random coefficient models it is shown that one side of the crosscorrelation function is zero, giving a useful signature of these processes. The non-zero features of the crosscorrelations are informative of the higher order dependency structure.     Biomechanical Model for Evaluation of Pediatric Upper Extremity Joint Dynamics During Wheelchair Mobility

    Pediatric manual wheelchair users (MWU) require high joint demands on their upper extremity (UE) during wheelchair mobility, leading them to be at risk of developing pain and pathology. Studies have examined UE biomechanics during wheelchair mobility in the adult population; however, current methods for evaluating UE joint dynamics of pediatric MWU are limited. An inverse dynamics model is proposed to characterize three-dimensional UE joint kinematics and kinetics during pediatric wheelchair mobility using a SmartWheel instrumented handrim system. The bilateral model comprises thorax, clavicle, scapula, upper arm, forearm, and hand segments and includes the sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, elbow and wrist joints. A single 17 year-old male with a C7 spinal cord injury (SCI) was evaluated while propelling his wheelchair across a 15-meter walkway. The subject exhibited wrist extension angles up to 60°, large elbow ranges of motion and peak glenohumeral joint forces up to 10% body weight. Statistically significant asymmetry of the wrist, elbow, glenohumeral and acromioclavicular joints was detected by the model. As demonstrated, the custom bilateral UE pediatric model may provide considerable quantitative insight into UE joint dynamics to improve wheelchair prescription, training, rehabilitation and long-term care of children with orthopedic disabilities. Further research is warranted to evaluate pediatric wheelchair mobility in a larger population of children with SCI to investigate correlations to pain, function and transitional changes to adulthood

    The Earned Income Tax Credit and Rural Families: Differences between Participants and Non-participants

    The differences between rural low-income mothers who were participants and non-participants in the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) were examined. One-third of the 224 eligible mothers in a multi-state study did not claim the tax credit. Non-participants were more likely to be Hispanic, less educated, with larger families, borrowing money from family, and living in more rural counties. Participating mothers, on the other hand, were more food secure, perceived their household income as being adequate, reported recent improvements in their economic situation, were satisfied with life, and lived in states with a state EITC. Analysis of qualitative data revealed that rural mothers had many misconceptions about the EITC.     The abdomen of Drosophila: does planar cell polarity orient the neurons of mechanosensory bristles?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the adult abdomen of <it>Drosophila</it>, the shafts of mechanosensory bristles point consistently from anterior to posterior. This is an example of planar cell polarity (PCP); some genes responsible for PCP have been identified. Each adult bristle is made by a clone of four cells, including the neuron that innervates it, but little is known as to how far the formation or positions of these cells depends on PCP. The neurons include a single dendrite and an axon; it is not known whether the orientation of these processes is influenced by PCP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We describe the development of the abdominal mechanosensory bristles in detail. The division of the precursor cell gives two daughters, one (pIIa) divides to give rise to the bristle shaft and socket cell and the other (pIIb) generates the neuron, the sheath and the fifth cell. Although the bristles and their associated shaft and socket cells are consistently oriented, the positioning and behaviour of the neuron, the sheath and the fifth cell, as well as the orientation of the axons and the dendritic paths, depend on location. For example, in the anterior zone of the segment, the axons grow posteriorly, while in the posterior zone, they grow anteriorly. Manipulating the PCP genes can reverse bristle orientation, change the path taken by the dendrite and the position of the cell body of the neuron. However, the paths taken by the axon are not affected.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PCP genes, such as <it>starry night </it>and <it>dachsous </it>orient the bristles and position the neuronal cell body and affect the shape of the dendrites. However, these PCP genes do not appear to change the paths followed by the sensory axons, which must, therefore, be polarised by other factors.</p

    Mapping High-velocity H-alpha and Lyman-alpha Emission from Supernova 1987A

    We present new {\it Hubble Space Telescope} images of high-velocity H-α\alpha and Lyman-α\alpha emission in the outer debris of SN~1987A. The H-α\alpha images are dominated by emission from hydrogen atoms crossing the reverse shock. For the first time we observe emission from the reverse shock surface well above and below the equatorial ring, suggesting a bipolar or conical structure perpendicular to the ring plane. Using the Hα\alpha imaging, we measure the mass flux of hydrogen atoms crossing the reverse shock front, in the velocity intervals (-7,500~<<~VobsV_{obs}~<<~-2,800 km s1^{-1}) and (1,000~<<~VobsV_{obs}~<<~7,500 km s1^{-1}), MH˙\dot{M_{H}} = 1.2~×\times~103^{-3} M_{\odot} yr1^{-1}. We also present the first Lyman-α\alpha imaging of the whole remnant and new ChandraChandra X-ray observations. Comparing the spatial distribution of the Lyman-α\alpha and X-ray emission, we observe that the majority of the high-velocity Lyman-α\alpha emission originates interior to the equatorial ring. The observed Lyman-α\alpha/H-α\alpha photon ratio, \langleR(Lα/Hα)R(L\alpha / H\alpha)\rangle \approx~17, is significantly higher than the theoretically predicted ratio of \approx 5 for neutral atoms crossing the reverse shock front. We attribute this excess to Lyman-α\alpha emission produced by X-ray heating of the outer debris. The spatial orientation of the Lyman-α\alpha and X-ray emission suggests that X-ray heating of the outer debris is the dominant Lyman-α\alpha production mechanism in SN 1987A at this phase in its evolution.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.
