    The Postmodern Church

    Within the past twenty years, the Church (especially in America) has experienced dwindling membership and attendance, along with a host of other problems. Many of these problems are symptomatic of a massive cultural shift toward postmodernism, leading to discontentment with the Church. In attempting to respond to these challenges, the emergent Church has arisen as a major element of American religious culture. Their methodology and doctrine is heavily influenced by postmodernism, which presents a further challenge for Christian leaders and ministers. This paper will survey the challenges facing the Church, will describe the emergent Church’s origin and response to these challenges, and will suggest a Church ministry paradigm that answers the challenges of postmodernism while preserving the integrity of the Gospel message

    The use-value of self-ethnographic research: insider-researcher, supervisor and external examiner perspectives

    This paper aims to explore the challenges of conducting and writing up ethnographic research with a view to debating its use-value to an employing organisation and business education. Arising from Masters level research, conducted by the lead author, this paper explains the context of the research and why it was chosen as an area, examines the challenges involved in doing and writing ethnography and discusses the use-value of ethnographic research to an employing organisation. Arguments relating to whether or not ethnography can or should be ‘objective’ are also considered. In 2009/2010 the lead author, Chloe, conducted a Masters level research project which was supervised by the second author of this paper, Aileen. As the lead tutor on research methods, and Chloe’s supervisor, Aileen encouraged her students to consider self-ethnographic research as a strategy for their practitioner research projects. Elaine, the third author of this paper has also encouraged the use of ethnography as a research strategy. Both Aileen and Elaine have conducted their own self-ethnographic research projects and have reflected on the potential and pitfalls of this research approach for part-time students, (Corley & Eades, 2006). The process of writing this paper has enabled further reflection and joint sense-making as we question some of our taken-for granted understandings by subjecting Chloe’s research process to ‘other’ questions. We consider issues which arose during Chloe’s Masters research process and draw attention to the practical and ethical challenges she experienced whilst conducting and writing up her research. In doing so we address the following research questions: • To what extent can one avoid taken-for-granted assumptions? • Are there particular ethical issues/challenges which are unique to self-ethnographic research? • Is self-ethnographic research useful to employing organisation and business education

    Project Maths academy: Using Khan Academy's exercise platform as an educational aid in a post-primary mathematics classroom

    The focus of this paper is a First Year post-primary mathematics class in which Khan Academy's online exercise platform was used weekly for an academic year. Interviews were conducted with the teacher, and students were surveyed about their opinions of the platform and its usage. Regular classroom observations took place to gain an insight into the context of these opinions. A subsequent survey compared these students’ attitudes towards mathematics classes with those of their peers who were not using the platform. Test scores were compared between three classes (one using Khan Academy; two not) to ascertain whether the platform had any effect on student performance. The platform was found to be an invaluable tool for class management: the teacher was able to provide the capable students with enough work while attending to students in need of support. Students enjoyed their time spent on the platform and the more capable students were able to work at their own pace and tackle more challenging exercises. Test results show that the platform may have a negative effect on student performance in the areas of integers and probability, but a positive effect in coordinate geometry. We comment on the evidence for statistically significant differences in the general results of those using the platform and those not

    Contributing to a revival and a research agenda: the psychology of entrepreneurship

    This paper highlights a renewed interest in the psychology of entrepreneurship which examines a taken-for-granted assumption within Business School programmes, that successful entrepreneurs can be taught. This paper reports the findings of a pilot study which explores the psychological profiles of self-identified entrepreneurs. The pilot study analyses the relationships between personality, motivation, individual demographic factors and entrepreneurial success factors using commercially available personality and motivation psychometrics. In doing so the paper presents a methodological contribution to this emerging area of research and practice. The applications of this research could include the use of these tools in screening processes for funding business start-ups and the focusing of support to aspiring and developing entrepreneurs. Feedback on the proposed approach is welcomed as is discussion with others who are interested in researching the psychology of entrepreneurship and how a better understanding of this inform can economic and social development

    � 2016 Roberts et al. The introduction of femtosecond lasers to cataract surgery has been the major disruptive technology introduced into ophthalmic surgery in the last decade. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery (FLACS) integrates high-resolution anterior segment imaging with a femtosecond laser allowing key steps of cataract surgery to be performed with computer-guided laser accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. Since the introduction of FLACS, there have been significant advances in laser software and hardware as well as surgeon experience, with over 250 articles published in the peer-reviewed literature. This review examines the published evidence relating to the LenSx platform and discusses surgical techniques, indications, safety, and clinical results

    TruncTrimmer: A First Step Towards Automating Standard Bioinformatic Analysis

    Bioinformatic analysis is a time-consuming process for labs performing research on various microbiomes. Researchers use tools like Qiime2 to help standardize the bioinformatic analysis methods, but even large, extensible platforms like Qiime2 have drawbacks due to the attention required by researchers. In this project, we propose to automate additional standard lab bioinformatic procedures by eliminating the existing manual process of determining the trim and truncate locations for paired end 2 sequences. We introduce a new Qiime2 plugin called TruncTrimmer to automate the process that usually requires the researcher to make a decision on where to trim and truncate manually after importing and demultiplexing sequences in the Qiime2 pipeline. By automating this process and removing the need for manual interaction by the researcher, this plugin provides another opportunity to automate another standard bioinformatic analysis procedure
