Differences between White and Minority students on factors related to persistence: a pilot study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine differences between White and Minority students on factors related to persistence. Persistence is defined as a student who completes a baccalaureate degree within four years or who is still enrolled four years after entering college (Astin, 1977). A total of 848 students were identified for the pilot study. The subjects were both White and Minority undergraduate students (African American, Asian, and Hispanic) enrolled in the College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Spring of 1994 at Iowa State University. Only a total of 115 surveys were returned, a 14 percent return rate; The study examined students\u27 history traits (ACT, high school rank, and college GPA) provided by the registrar\u27s office. Also, factors as stated by the literature that relate to student persistence were examined through the use of a questionnaire created by the researcher; Two hypotheses were of significance (study skills and academic achievement as measured by ACT, high school rank, and college GPA) when using the t-test. The study skills hypothesis indicated that Minorities had a greater preference for studying in groups than Whites. The academic achievement as measured by ACT, high school rank, and college GPA hypothesis indicated that Whites had a higher college GPA than Minorities. In summary, insights and recommendations generated from this pilot study will benefit future studies related to student persistence. The findings point toward some possible consideration for future studies. However, caution is advised in interpreting these findings, due to the low return rate, differences existing in students\u27 backgrounds, and differences may be masked by combining groups

Finalnie, dokonano oceny zgodności pomiędzy zadaniami zaplanowanymi w dokumentacji strategicznej i w budżetach gmin. Pozwoliło to na wskazanie, w jakim stopniu budżety wykorzystywane są do realizacji planów strategicznych gmin. Pośrednio oceniono jakość polityki turystycznej w gminach. The main goal of the paper is to verify, if the municipal budget can be implemented as an instrument of tourism development local policy. Presented case study research were conducted in five selected rural municipalities. Authors analysed budget plans and reports on budget execution. Furthermore, municipal expenditures on tourism development were clearly identified. The analysis of tourism development local plans and strategies was necessary. Finally, authors assessed compatibility of budget tasks with strategic plans at a local level. Therefore, local tourism policy could be partially evaluated

Mots clés: Migration de projectile, Traumatisme par arme à feu, Traumatisme crânienEnglish Title: Spontaneous migration of intracranial bullet: clinical pattern and management a case reportEnglish AbstractHead gunshot injuries are serious. The clinical features are variable and may have some characteristics. The authors report a case of spontaneous intracranial bullet migration occurred after a head gunshot injury during a hunt party. It was revealed by a secondary neurological deterioration and confirmed by imaging. The 24 year old patient underwent surgery and the recovery was satisfactory. Keywords: Gunshot injury, Head Injury, Migration of bulle

Registration Loss Learning for Deep Probabilistic Point Set Registration

Probabilistic methods for point set registration have interesting theoretical properties, such as linear complexity in the number of used points, and they easily generalize to joint registration of multiple point sets. In this work, we improve their recognition performance to match state of the art. This is done by incorporating learned features, by adding a von Mises-Fisher feature model in each mixture component, and by using learned attention weights. We learn these jointly using a registration loss learning strategy (RLL) that directly uses the registration error as a loss, by back-propagating through the registration iterations. This is possible as the probabilistic registration is fully differentiable, and the result is a learning framework that is truly end-to-end. We perform extensive experiments on the 3DMatch and Kitti datasets. The experiments demonstrate that our approach benefits significantly from the integration of the learned features and our learning strategy, outperforming the state-of-the-art on Kitti.
