[Review of] Samuel Selvon. Moses Ascending

    Get PDF
Sam Selvon\u27s fifth novel Moses Ascending addresses the ethnic experience with dual prongs: linguistic and racial. Although the situation of the novel is not new -- the plight of the subject come to the motherland -- having been treated by George Lamming and others, this handling of the basic theme is: all the sacred cows fall before Selvon\u27s iconoclastic pen. Moses, the I protagonist, is but a faintly veiled, highly disillusioned Selvon who dares look at the present world situation: the emperor has no clothes

[Review of] Ian Smart. Central American Writers of West Indian Origin: A New Hispanic Literature

    Get PDF
Ian Smart has made, as he himself asserts in the Author\u27s Foreword, a very limited approach to the very complex body of literature written by Central American authors of West Indian origin. In fact one wonders if indeed his most insistent premises are verifiable: the region comprises one cultural area in which common factors have forged a more or less common way of looking at life ... share an identifiable Weltanschauung. His emphasis lies on the commonness of the West Indian experiences which he perceives to be African. To be sure, there are many critics who would take issue with him, some of whom he does allude to. The truth is that he treads on perilous, indeed highly controversial, ground. Many critics would indeed demand that we look at the nuances of differences among the authors as a way of perceiving the complexity of the Caribbean experience. To be sure, there has been a shared history to a point, but it is this very juncture which makes all the difference. Generally, critically speaking, one is concerned more with those areas of differences, no matter how minute, which do indeed distinguish one entity from another

This book is a collection of papers originally presented at the 1982 Eighth International Economic History Conference held in Budapest. As the title suggests, the volume incorporates a wide range of geographical areas and historical time periods. This multidisciplinary study represents a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives and thus highlights issues and concerns from various disciplinary perspectives. The twenty-two essays in the volume include macro and micro case studies on several continents with authors from several countries. It makes information from many languages available to the English reader. In a sense there is almost an encyclopedic treatment of various migrating groups and methods of analyzing their migrating experience

Canadian Multiculturalism Ideology: Mere Tolerance or Full Acceptance

    Get PDF
September 11, 2001 will forever be etched in the memory of Canadians who were deeply affected by the events of that day. This cataclysmic occurrence had a pivotal place not only upon the private troubles of those directly related but also upon the public issues and the consequent public policies of all of us who may not have been as directly touched. Such a life-changing experience will impinge upon the politics of our entire nation. The terrorist act was a political statement at one level which must be addressed politically as well It is noteworthy, given this context of the terrorist attack in the nation to the South, that October 8, 2001 represented the thirtieth anniversary of the political declaration of multiculturalism as a public state policy within Canada What difference does the official policy discourse and ideology of multiculturalism make in the political response to the ethnocultural and racial diversity within and without its national borders

Archeological Investigations at the Laredo Cemetery Site (41WB22), Webb County, Texas

    Get PDF
Archeological involvement in the exhumation of relatively recent historic cemeteries is a new development in Texas. Traditionally, archeologists have directed their attention toward the burial practices of aboriginal peoples and have shied away from any dealings with the excavations of late nineteenth and early twentieth century cemeteries. This trend has continued despite an ever-increasing awareness of and concern with changing modes of historic and recent tombstone embellishment on the part of archeologists, cultural anthropologists and historians. In practice, tombstones have been studied sporadically but the tasks of relocation and reinterment of the physical human remains have been left to undertakers and professional cemetery movers. The present report authored by Mary Jane McReynolds describes the results of limited archeological investigations at the Laredo Cemetery Site (4lWB22j in the City of Laredo, Texas. The investigations resulted from an emergency situation in which a forgotten cemetery was rediscovered in the midst of a construction project. The need for rapid action precluded the development of a thorough problemoriented research design and consequently led to the adoption of a severely limited scope of investigations. Despite ! these problems, Ms. McReynolds has presented significant new data for archeologists in terms of coffin styles, coffin decorations, and artifacts associated with various interments. While the report is not intended to be exhaustive, it does recount some of the problems encountered in this type of investigation and provides general suggestions for directing future research in historic cemetery sites
