On the Representation of the Visual Arts at NWSA

What commitment is the Association prepared to make to women\u27s studies in the visual arts? Judging from the 1981 Convention the question is not an easy one to answer. On the one hand, the program promised several exhibits and eight sessions involving visual materials; on the other, several of these plans were canceled or rendered ineffective by scheduling probl ems. The art gallery was closed, I was told, because the exhibit of tree-spirit masks failed to materialize and the space was too large for Brenda Verner\u27s Americana. Betty La Duke\u27s etchings and drawings were displayed in the busy Women\u27s Center lounge without adequate documentation. I never located the woodcuts by Blyth e Follet-Colon. Six of the eight sessions were scheduled in conflict with each other. The only session on Asian women artists was canceled. I assume that all these problems were the result of unfortunate but unavoidable circumstances. But my real concern is this: only two (or at most three) of the 272 sessions actually discussed works of art created by minority women. Surely such works should have been closer to the center of our attention at a Convention devoted to the task of understanding the effects of racism. Surely the works are not so well known that we can afford to pass over them without comment

Have No Fear! White Ladies are Here!: Interrogating the Image and Institutionalization of White Womanhood in the Classroom

    Get PDF
Using an interdisciplinary approach, this project examines how the American conception of white womanhood has informed and molded perceptions of what makes a “good” teacher. By examining historical and contemporary film-based discourses around white womanhood, it is clear that teaching has been transformed into another form of mothering, tying the teaching field to the white woman. This discursive connection is made seemingly permanent through the institutionalization of the white woman in the classroom. This paper will then begin to explore how this process has affected the larger educational system. Ultimately, this project hopes to encourage white women in education to reflect and understand how their choices fit into a larger discourse

Development of a Web-Based Information System for Benchmarking of Safety Assessment Approaches for Research Reactors

A benchmarking of current safety assessment approaches (deterministic and probabilistic) has been performed for about 30 research reactor installations in Europe, the USA and South Africa. The results show significant discrepancies in practices for similar types of reactors, mainly due to different regulatory requirements. The results are discussed with a view to identify future improvements on an international level, e.g. in the context of the recently published IAEA Code of Conduct on the Safety of Research Reactors and could form the basis of a future Working Group in the area, trying to find harmonisation areas, together with the European Research Reactor Operators Group (RROG).JRC.F.4-Nuclear design safet

The subtitle of this collection raises a question: Is it wise to mix various genres and also authors from very different tribes and then to limit this mixture by the arbitrary geographical borders of a state

Lebenswissenschaftler?

Remember that ludicrous question, Why are there no great women artists ? As we strolled through Women Artists: 1550-1950, a show at New York\u27s Brooklyn Museum this month, we kept asking ourselves another question—where have all these paintings been? Hidden, lost, obscured in some cases for centuries, they have now been gathered by Ann Sutherland Harris and Linda Nochlin, many from private collections, others from the holdings of some of the best museums here and abroad. Harris and Nochlin deserve praise for the care with which they selected work of both high quality and extraordinary variety. We longed only for more: more work by the 83 artists, many of whom are represented only by a single painting, and more artists—at least another 150 are listed in the catalogue but do not appear in the exhibition
