Enhancement of tumour growth in two syngeneic C3H murine systems by immunization via the intracaecal route.
Over the past 70 years many experiments have been designed to promote tumour growth. These studies were all carried out in allogeneic tumour systems or by artificially influencing the immunization process. In the present study, the growth of syngeneic mammary tumour cells was enhanced by prior immunization via the intracaecal route. Such induced enhancement could be transferred to untreated animals by serum or by spleen cells. Tumour growth was also enhanced in another syngeneic system by immunization via the intestinal route with frozen-thawed ascites tumour cells. The result is in direct contrast to that obtained by similar immunization with live cells, which affords protection against a later challenge
Unbound states in C populated by -decay of the 16.11 MeV state
The reaction has been used to populate the state at an excitation energy of 16.11 MeV in C. -decay
to unbound states in C are identified from analysis of the decay of the
populated daughter states. Due to a new technique, -decay to the 10.8
MeV 1 state is observed for the first time, and transitions to the 9.64 MeV
(3) and 12.71 MeV (1) are confirmed. Unresolved transitions to natural
parity strength at 10 MeV and 11.5-13 MeV are also observed. For all

Initial results from the Caltech/DRSI balloon-borne isotope experiment
The Caltech/DSRI balloonborne High Energy Isotope Spectrometer Telescope (HEIST) was flown successfully from Palestine, Texas on 14 May, 1984. The experiment was designed to measure cosmic ray isotopic abundances from neon through iron, with incident particle energies from approx. 1.5 to 2.2 GeV/nucleon depending on the element. During approximately 38 hours at float altitude, 100,000 events were recorded with Z or = 6 and incident energies approx. 1.5 GeV/nucleon. A Cerenkov - ΔE/ΔX Experiment for Measuring Cosmic-Ray Isotopes from Neon Through Iron
A ballon-borne cosmic-ray experiment has been constructed to measure cosmic-ray isotope masses, It employs a pair of Cerenkov counters and a NaI scintillator stack to determine changes in ΔE in energy and Δγ in Lorentz factor for a traversing or stopping particle. Mass M = ΔE/Δγ. Mass resolution better than 0.3 a.m.u. is expected for incident elements from neon through iron, with incident Lorentz gammas ranging from 2.4 to 3.1, depending on the element. Using data obtained at the Berkeley Bevalac, the mass resolution ∂M ≈ 2 a.m.u., measured for ^(55)Mn ions with incident γ = 2.5
Systematic trends in beta-delayed particle emitting nuclei: The case of beta-p-alpha emission from 21Mg
We have observed beta+-delayed alpha and p-alpha emission from the
proton-rich nucleus 21Mg produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The
assignments were cross-checked with a time distribution analysis. This is the
third identified case of beta-p-alpha emission. We discuss the systematic of
beta-delayed particle emission decays, show that our observed decays fit
naturally into the existing pattern, and argue that the patterns are to a large
extent caused by odd-even effects.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Galaxy Counterparts of metal-rich Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers - I: The case of the z=2.35 DLA towards Q2222-0946
We have initiated a survey using the newly commissioned X-shooter
spectrograph to target candidate relatively metal-rich damped Lyman-alpha
absorbers (DLAs). The spectral coverage of X-shooter allows us to search for
not only Lyman-alpha emission, but also rest-frame optical emission lines. We
have chosen DLAs where the strongest rest-frame optical lines ([OII], [OIII],
Hbeta and Halpha) fall in the NIR atmospheric transmission bands. In this first
paper resulting from the survey, we report on the discovery of the galaxy
counterpart of the z_abs = 2.354 DLA towards the z=2.926 quasar Q2222$-0946.
This DLA is amongst the most metal-rich z>2 DLAs studied so far at comparable
redshifts and there is evidence for substantial depletion of refractory
elements onto dust grains. We measure metallicities from ZnII, SiII, NiII, MnII
and FeII of -0.46+/-0.07, -0.51+/-0.06, -0.85+/-0.06, -1.23+/-0.06, and
-0.99+/-0.06, respectively. The galaxy is detected in the Lyman-alpha, [OIII]
lambda4959,5007 Halpha emission lines at an impact parameter of about 0.8
arcsec (6 kpc at z_abs = 2.354). We infer a star-formation rate of 10 M_sun
yr^-1, which is a lower limit due to the possibility of slit-loss. Compared to
the recently determined Halpha luminosity function for z=2.2 galaxies the
DLA-galaxy counterpart has a luminosity of L~0.1L^*_Halpha. The emission-line
ratios are 4.0 (Lyalpha/Halpha) and 1.2 ([OIII]/Halpha). The Lyalpha line shows
clear evidence for resonant scattering effects, namely an asymmetric,
redshifted (relative to the systemic redshift) component and a much weaker
blueshifted component. The fact that the blueshifted component is relatively
weak indicates the presence of a galactic wind. The properties of the galaxy
counterpart of this DLA is consistent with the prediction that metal-rich DLAs
are associated with the most luminous of the DLA-galaxy counterparts.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Kinematics of Multigrid Monte Carlo
We study the kinematics of multigrid Monte Carlo algorithms by means of
acceptance rates for nonlocal Metropolis update proposals. An approximation
formula for acceptance rates is derived. We present a comparison of different
coarse-to-fine interpolation schemes in free field theory, where the formula is
exact. The predictions of the approximation formula for several interacting
models are well confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. The following rule is
found: For a critical model with fundamental Hamiltonian H(phi), absence of
critical slowing down can only be expected if the expansion of
in terms of the shift psi contains no relevant (mass) term. We also introduce a
multigrid update procedure for nonabelian lattice gauge theory and study the
