The Economic Theory of Production Conceals Opportunities for Sustainability Improvement
In analyses of action options regarding sustainability, the economic theory of production is often used as a conceptual starting point. We contend that this theory is deficient, even counterproductive. Especially, we argue that effective options exist for sustainability improvement that are not visible in this theory, and thus will not be taken into consideration when comparing alternative options based on it. We argue that the fundamental problem of the economic theory of production is that it cannot explain the formation of either cost or value in an adequate way. This situation seems to have been caused by the foci and assumptions of the “marginalist turn” of economics, starting from 1870, especially the denial to consider any internal organization of production other than that caused by prices and costs, the assumption of optimal efficiency, and the assumption of ends as given. The shortcomings of the economic theory of production are demonstrated through a case study on plasterboard (also known as drywall) installation. We show how practices for installation of these products, as advocated in lean construction, would not have been suggested or visible in a “sustainability” analysis based on economic theory
BOSS Great Wall: morphology, luminosity, and mass
We study the morphology, luminosity and mass of the superclusters from the
BOSS Great Wall (BGW), a recently discovered very rich supercluster complex at
the redshift . We have employed the Minkowski functionals to quantify
supercluster morphology. We calculate supercluster luminosities and masses
using two methods. Firstly, we used data about the luminosities and stellar
masses of high stellar mass galaxies with .
Secondly, we applied a scaling relation that combines morphological and
physical parameters of superclusters to obtain supercluster luminosities, and
obtained supercluster masses using the mass-to-light ratios found for local
rich superclusters. We find that the BGW superclusters are very elongated
systems, with shape parameter values of less than . This value is lower
than that found for the most elongated local superclusters. The values of the
fourth Minkowski functional for the richer BGW superclusters (
and ) show that they have a complicated and rich inner structure. We
identify two Planck SZ clusters in the BGW superclusters, one in the richest
BGW supercluster, and another in one of the poor BGW superclusters. The
luminosities of the BGW superclusters are in the range of , and masses in the range of . Supercluster luminosities and masses obtained
with two methods agree well. We conclude that the BGW is a complex of massive,
luminous and large superclusters with very elongated shape. The search and
detailed study, including the morphology analysis of the richest superclusters
and their complexes from observations and simulations can help us to understand

Social support, problem solving, and the longitudinal course of newlywed marriage
Married couples (N = 172) were observed as newlyweds and again one year later while engaging in 2 problem-solving and 2 personal support discussions. Microanalytic coding of these conversations was used to examine associations between problem-solving and social support behaviors over one year and their relative contributions to 10-year trajectories of self-reported relationship satisfaction and dissolution. Results demonstrated that initially lower levels of positive support behaviors and higher levels of negative support behaviors predicted 1-year increases in negative emotion displayed during problem-solving conversations. Emotions coded from the initial problem-solving conversations did not predict 1-year changes in social support behaviors. Controlling for emotions displayed during problem-solving interactions eliminated or reduced associations between initial social support behaviors and (a) later levels of satisfaction and (b) relationship dissolution. These findings corroborate models that prioritize empathy, validation, and caring as key elements in the development of intimacy (e.g., Reis & Shaver, 1988), and they suggest that deficits in these domains foreshadow deterioration in problem-solving and conflict management. Implications for integrating support and problem-solving in models of relationship change are outlined, as are implications for incorporating social support in education programs for developing relationships
One species in eight : DNA barcodes from type specimens resolve a taxonomic quagmire
Each holotype specimen provides the only objective link to a particular Linnean binomen. Sequence information from them is increasingly valuable due to the growing usage of DNA barcodes in taxonomy. As type specimens are often old, it may only be possible to recover fragmentary sequence information from them. We tested the efficacy of short sequences from type specimens in the resolution of a challenging taxonomic puzzle: the Elachista dispunctella complex which includes 64 described species with minuscule morphological differences. We applied a multistep procedure to resolve the taxonomy of this species complex. First, we sequenced a large number of newly collected specimens and as many holotypes as possible. Second, we used all >400 bp examine species boundaries. We employed three unsupervised methods (BIN, ABGD, GMYC) with specified criteria on how to handle discordant results and examined diagnostic bases from each delineated putative species (operational taxonomic units, OTUs). Third, we evaluated the morphological characters of each OTU. Finally, we associated short barcodes from types with the delineated OTUs. In this step, we employed various supervised methods, including distance-based, tree-based and character-based. We recovered 658 bp barcode sequences from 194 of 215 fresh specimens and recovered an average of 141bp from 33 of 42 holotypes. We observed strong congruence among all methods and good correspondence with morphology. We demonstrate potential pitfalls with tree-, distance- and character-based approaches when associating sequences of varied length. Our results suggest that sequences as short as 56bp can often provide valuable taxonomic information. The results support significant taxonomic oversplitting of species in the Elachista dispunctella complex.Peer reviewe
Emergence of Symmetry in Complex Networks
Many real networks have been found to have a rich degree of symmetry, which
is a very important structural property of complex network, yet has been rarely
studied so far. And where does symmetry comes from has not been explained. To
explore the mechanism underlying symmetry of the networks, we studied
statistics of certain local symmetric motifs, such as symmetric bicliques and
generalized symmetric bicliques, which contribute to local symmetry of
networks. We found that symmetry of complex networks is a consequence of
similar linkage pattern, which means that nodes with similar degree tend to
share similar linkage targets. A improved version of BA model integrating
similar linkage pattern successfully reproduces the symmetry of real networks,
indicating that similar linkage pattern is the underlying ingredient that
responsible for the emergence of the symmetry in complex networks.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
In search of sleep biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease: K-Complexes do not discriminate between patients with mild cognitive impairment and healthy controls
The K-complex (KC) is one of the hallmarks of Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep. Recent observations point to a drastic decrease of spontaneous KCs in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, no study has investigated when, in the development of AD, this phenomenon starts. The assessment of KC density in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a clinical condition considered a possible transitional stage between normal cognitive function and probable AD, is still lacking. The aim of the present study was to compare KC density in AD/ MCI patients and healthy controls (HCs), also assessing the relationship between KC density and cognitive decline. Twenty amnesic MCI patients underwent a polysomnographic recording of a nocturnal sleep. Their data were compared to those of previously recorded 20 HCs and 20 AD patients. KCs during stage 2 NREM sleep were visually identified and KC densities of the three groups were compared. AD patients showed a significant KC density decrease compared with MCI patients and HCs, while no differences were observed between MCI patients and HCs. KC density was positively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Binaural interaction and the octave illusion
The auditory octave illusion arises when dichotically presented tones, one octave apart, alternate rapidly between the ears. Most subjects perceive an illusory sequence of monaural tones: A high tone in the right ear (RE) alternates with a low tone, incorrectly localized to the left ear (LE). Behavioral studies suggest that the perceived pitch follows the RE input, and the perceived location the higher-frequency sound. To explore the link between the perceived pitches and brain-level interactions of dichotic tones, magnetoencephalographic responses were recorded to 4 binaural combinations of 2-min long continuous 400- and 800-Hz tones and to 4 monaural tones. Responses to LE and RE inputs were distinguished by frequency-tagging the ear-specific stimuli at different modulation frequencies. During dichotic presentation, ipsilateral LE tones elicited weaker and ipsilateral RE tones stronger responses than when both ears received the same tone. During the most paradoxical stimulus—high tone to LE and low tone to RE perceived as a low tone in LE during the illusion—also the contralateral responses to LE tones were diminished. The results demonstrate modified binaural interaction of dichotic tones one octave apart, suggesting that this interaction contributes to pitch perception during the octave illusion.Peer reviewe
Predicting Space Weather Effects on Close Approach Events
The NASA Robotic Conjunction Assessment Risk Analysis (CARA) team sends ephemeris data to the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC) for conjunction assessment screening against the JSpOC high accuracy catalog and then assesses risk posed to protected assets from predicted close approaches. Since most spacecraft supported by the CARA team are located in LEO orbits, atmospheric drag is the primary source of state estimate uncertainty. Drag magnitude and uncertainty is directly governed by atmospheric density and thus space weather. At present the actual effect of space weather on atmospheric density cannot be accurately predicted because most atmospheric density models are empirical in nature, which do not perform well in prediction. The Jacchia-Bowman-HASDM 2009 (JBH09) atmospheric density model used at the JSpOC employs a solar storm active compensation feature that predicts storm sizes and arrival times and thus the resulting neutral density alterations. With this feature, estimation errors can occur in either direction (i.e., over- or under-estimation of density and thus drag). Although the exact effect of a solar storm on atmospheric drag cannot be determined, one can explore the effects of JBH09 model error on conjuncting objects' trajectories to determine if a conjunction is likely to become riskier, less risky, or pass unaffected. The CARA team has constructed a Space Weather Trade-Space tool that systematically alters the drag situation for the conjuncting objects and recalculates the probability of collision for each case to determine the range of possible effects on the collision risk. In addition to a review of the theory and the particulars of the tool, the different types of observed output will be explained, along with statistics of their frequency
Circadian pattern and burstiness in mobile phone communication
The temporal communication patterns of human individuals are known to be
inhomogeneous or bursty, which is reflected as the heavy tail behavior in the
inter-event time distribution. As the cause of such bursty behavior two main
mechanisms have been suggested: a) Inhomogeneities due to the circadian and
weekly activity patterns and b) inhomogeneities rooted in human task execution
behavior. Here we investigate the roles of these mechanisms by developing and
then applying systematic de-seasoning methods to remove the circadian and
weekly patterns from the time-series of mobile phone communication events of
individuals. We find that the heavy tails in the inter-event time distributions
remain robustly with respect to this procedure, which clearly indicates that
the human task execution based mechanism is a possible cause for the remaining
burstiness in temporal mobile phone communication patterns.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
The interaction of lean and building information modeling in construction
Lean construction and Building Information Modeling are quite different initiatives, but both are having profound impacts on the construction industry. A rigorous analysis of the myriad specific interactions between them indicates that a synergy exists which, if properly understood in theoretical terms, can be exploited to improve construction processes beyond the degree to which it might be improved by application of either of these paradigms independently. Using a matrix that juxtaposes BIM functionalities with prescriptive lean construction principles, fifty-six interactions have been identified, all but four of which represent constructive interaction. Although evidence for the majority of these has been found, the matrix is not considered complete, but rather a framework for research to
explore the degree of validity of the interactions. Construction executives, managers, designers and developers of IT systems for construction can also benefit from the framework as an aid to recognizing the potential synergies when planning their lean and BIM adoption strategies
