    Etude du répertoire de réponses : une approche dialogique de l'opinion

    Opinion surveys usually settle for measuring opinion, an answer considered to be the participant’s attitude toward the subject. Yet when further questioned, we are able to give several opinions, several answers, that we have internalized from our interactions with others, into a repertoire of responses (Moscovici, 1970). In doing so, we assume the attitude of others (Mead, 1934) thus mediating our relationship to the object (Moscovici, 1984): each position is the result of an internal dialogue, maintained by the subject with others and their responses (Markova, 2005). Our goal in this thesis is to invent a method to understand this repertoire of responses. Thus, in our first two studies, we tested a paradigm that allows us to observe, the multiplicity of responses that are available in our repertoire, as well as their shared and coherent nature. A thirdstudy based on this method, enabled us to observe that the degree of development of the repertoire of responses is related to the involvement of the individual in regard to the object. We were also able to observe the development of a repertoire of responses in a field study lasting over two years, in a small group who discovered a new technology. Generally, this thesis contributes to writing the grammar of the repertoire of responses by presenting a paradigm that emphasizes the varied nature of opinion

    Explicit computation of the electrostatic energy for an elliptical charged disc.

    International audienceThis letter describes a method for obtaining an explicit expression for the electrostatic energy of a charged elliptical infinitely thin disc. The charge distribution is assumed to be polynomial. Such explicit values for this energy are fundamental for assessing the accuracy of boundary element codes. The main tools used are an extension of Copson's method and a diagonalization, given by Leppington and Levine, of the single-layer potential operator associated with the electrostatic potential created by a distribution of charges on the elliptical disc

    Overlapping-gate architecture for silicon Hall bar MOSFET devices in the low electron density regime

    Full text link
    We report the fabrication and study of Hall bar MOSFET devices in which an overlapping-gate architecture allows four-terminal measurements of low-density 2D electron systems, while maintaining a high density at the ohmic contacts. Comparison with devices made using a standard single gate show that measurements can be performed at much lower densities and higher channel resistances, despite a reduced peak mobility. We also observe a voltage threshold shift which we attribute to negative oxide charge, injected during electron-beam lithography processing.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted for Applied Physics Letter

    Health considerations for transgender women and remaining unknowns : a narrative review

    Transgender (trans) women (TW) were assigned male at birth but have a female gender identity or gender expression. The literature on management and health outcomes of TW has grown recently with more publication of research. This has coincided with increasing awareness of gender diversity as communities around the world identify and address health disparities among trans people. In this narrative review, we aim to comprehensively summarize health considerations for TW and identify TW-related research areas that will provide answers to remaining unknowns surrounding TW's health. We cover up-to-date information on: (1) feminizing gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT); (2) benefits associated with GAHT, particularly quality of life, mental health, breast development and bone health; (3) potential risks associated with GAHT, including cardiovascular disease and infertility; and (4) other health considerations like HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, other tumours, voice therapy, dermatology, the brain and cognition, and aging. Although equally deserving of mention, feminizing gender-affirming surgery, paediatric and adolescent populations, and gender nonbinary individuals are beyond the scope of this review. While much of the data we discuss come from Europe, the creation of a United States transgender cohort has already contributed important retrospective data that are also summarized here. Much remains to be determined regarding health considerations for TW. Patients and providers will benefit from larger and longer prospective studies involving TW, particularly regarding the effects of aging, race and ethnicity, type of hormonal treatment (e.g. different oestrogens, anti-androgens) and routes of administration (e.g. oral, parenteral, transdermal) on all the topics we address

    Creating composite indicators with DEA and robustness analysis: The case of the technology achievement index.

    Composite indicators are regularly used for benchmarking countries’ performance, but equally often stir controversies about the unavoidable subjectivity that is connected with their construction. Data Envelopment Analysis helps to overcome some key limitations, viz., the undesirable dependence of final results from the preliminary normalization of sub-indicators, and, more cogently, from the subjective nature of the weights used for aggregating. Still, subjective decisions remain, and such modelling uncertainty propagates onto countries’ composite indicator values and relative rankings. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis are therefore needed to assess robustness of final results and to analyze how much each individual source of uncertainty contributes to the output variance. The current paper reports on these issues, using the Technology Achievement Index as an illustration.Indexes; Indicators; Robustness; Technology;

    The effects of an artificially enhanced clinoptilolite in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

    Background: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders presenting in clinical practice. IBS is a functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain or discomfort is associated with a change in bowel habit and with features of disordered defecation.Methods: IBS candidates were enrolled in the study using the Rome III diagnostic criteria. Participants were identified as IBS-D (diarrhoea dominant), IBS-C (constipation dominant) as well as an IBS-M (mixed group). The participants were randomly assigned; for intention to treat with 750 mg potentiated clinoptilolite three times daily or placebo. The primary endpoint was to determine whether or not the patient experienced adequate relief of symptoms.Results: At the end of treatment 67% and 40% of patients were classified as overall responders in the potentiated clinoptilolite and placebo groups respectively (N=50). After week three of treatment the number of weekly responders was significantly higher (p=0.048) in the potentiated clinoptilolite group compared to the Placebo group, and at week four of treatment the number of weekly responders was borderline significant higher in the potentiated clinoptilolite group (P=0.06). Secondary endpoints were measured but the population size proved too small to realistically obtain statistical significance (p > 0.5).Conclusion: Potentiated clinoptilolite shows clinical benefit, and should be tested further in larger clinical trials. In addition, potentiated clinoptilolite also shows reduced symptoms of IBD-D and IBS-M respectively. It is recommended that clinical response to dose variation should also be further investigated in designated populations of IBS-M and IBS-D patients.Keywords: Irritable Bowel Syndrome; potentiated clinoptilolite; zeolite; randomised controlled trial; efficac
