Incorporating native plant communities on farms for forage and wildlife

Rotational grazing systems have potential to reduce soil loss and fossil fuel use, and may increase biodiversity by providing a wildlife habitat. Establishing native, warm-season plant communities based on the region\u27s native tallgrass prairie ecosystem as part of a rotational grazing system would benefit graziers by offering higher drought tolerance and pasture production levels in the midsummer months

Program Evaluation of Virginia Beach Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

For this program evaluation project CASA was being evaluated on how efficient their advocacy efforts are towards the abused and neglected children they serve. An impact model was used to evaluate CASA. To gather results and findings the data collections utilized was an interview, survey, and two program impact reports. Over the course of the evaluation it was revealed that CASA is efficient in their advocacy efforts although the agency needed more volunteers, access to training workshops, and possibly the employment of another full-time advocate case manager

Prairie Contour Strips: Demonstrating the importance of custom seed mix design for biological integrity.

This project aims to add native vegetation to the agricultural landscape by establishing demonstration plantings of high quality prairie vegetation on farms and to be a source of information and expertise for a network of skilled practitioners. The ultimate result of the project is to enhance the ability of technical service providers, conservation professionals, landowners, and others who influence land use practices to design high quality seed mixes and plant them successfully

Where Earth and Life Sciences Intersect: Investigations of the Water-Root-Soil Interface

The transition from deep-rooted perennial prairies to annual row crops has profoundly changed our environment. Roots and soils are interdependent: roots extract water and nutrients from the soil while at the same time influencing the hydrology, structure, composition, and biological community of the soil. Through your active participation, we will introduce a set of inquiry-based lessons developed by a collaboration of ecologists, teachers, and naturalists to engage K-12 students in learning about earth and life sciences in the root zone

There will be brief contextual information and a description of the workflow that has been developed for reviewing the files and uploading them to Digital UNC. Known footage includes the Cranford fire from 1948 and an amazing library orientation video from the 1980s. This is a fun presentation showcasing gems from the archives
