Evaluation of the particle geometry and interphase influence on the filler-matrix debonding process
Incorporation of rigid fillers into polymer matrices represents a widely used technique to obtain improved performance. The mechanical behavior finally obtained is closely related to a wide range of involved factors (filler type and size, internal structure, filler-matrix interaction, among others) and to activated dissipative mechanisms (debonding, plastic void growth, crazing, matrix yielding, etc). In this work, a debonding strength approach was applied for rigid particles (spherical, elliptical and fiber) surrounded by an interphase. The effect of interphase mechanical properties and thickness on the debonding process was investigated. The obtained results suggested a significant influence of the transition rigidity. In general, stiffer interphases promoted higher critical strength values. On the other hand, particle surrounded by a softer transition region displayed higher dissipated energy for all examined particle, except for spheres.Fil: Perez, Ezequiel Martin.
The placement of sound in artistic contexts
There are a range of compositional approaches and techniques to consider when producing work of a sonic nature; from decisions about source material and location, to set-up configurations and sound diffusion. The presented case studies will examine approaches taken by the composer for indoor and outdoor spaces and discuss the artistic intention of each piece within a specified space. The case study examples will range from contemporary theatrical sound designs to sound art performance and audio-visual installations. Comparisons will be made between the various disciplines of sound art in relation to theatre sound in order to seek common ground and the suggestion of a sharing of practice
Hepatitis B virus infection and the immune response: The big questions
Clinical events and the host immune response during hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection are intricately linked. Despite decades of research, important questions concerning the immunopathogenesis of chronic HBV infection remain unanswered. For example, it is unclear which immune parameters facilitate persistence, and if HBV can be completely cleared from the human liver. Recent technological breakthroughs now allow researchers to address these seemingly basic, but essential questions surrounding HBV immunity. It will be important to better define the molecular underpinnings of immune cell function and dysfunction during chronic disease and in controlled infection, with particular focus on the liver, as little information is available on the intrahepatic compartment. In the near future, it may be possible to solve some of the controversy surrounding the immune responses to HBV, and establish the features of both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system required to achieve sustained control of HBV infection
Accessibility 2.0: people, policies and processes
The work of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is described
in a set of technical guidelines designed to maximise accessibility to digital resources. Further activities continue to focus on technical developments, with current discussions exploring the potential merits of use of Semantic Web and Web 2.0 approaches. In this paper we argue that the focus on technologies can be
counter-productive. Rather than seeking to enhance accessibility
through technical innovations, the authors argue that the priority
should be for a user-focussed approach, which embeds best
practices through the development of achievable policies and
processes and which includes all stakeholders in the process of
maximising accessibility. The paper reviews previous work in this area and summarises
criticisms of WAI’s approach. The paper further develops a
tangram model which describes a pluralistic, as opposed to a
universal, approach to Web accessibility, which encourages
creativity and diversity in developing accessible services. Such
diversity will need to reflect the context of usage, including the
aims of a service (informational, educational, cultural, etc.), the
users’ and the services providers’ environment. The paper describes a stakeholder approach to embedding best
practices, which recognises that organisations will encounter
difficulties in developing sustainable approaches by addressing
only the needs of the end user and the Web developer. The paper describes work which has informed the ideas in this paper and plans for further work, including an approach to advocacy and education which coins the “Accessibility 2.0” term to describe a renewed approach to accessibility, which builds on previous work but prioritises the importance of the user. The paper concludes by describing the implications of the ideas described in this paper for WAI and for accessibility practitioner stakeholders
