There and back again. Heidegger and Tolkien on technology
The purpose of this paper is to analyze Tolkien’s and Heidegger’s thoughts on technology with the aim of justifying that the metaphysical/ontological position of the second brings problems regarding the solution of the problem concerning technology that can be easily solved if one opts for a Tolkienian approach to the problem, that is, from a rather mundane or everyday dimension of humanity (or “hobbitry”, to be more precise). The purpose of this paper is to analyze Tolkien’s and Heidegger’s thoughts on technology with the aim of justifying that the metaphysical/ontological position of the second brings problems regarding the solution of the problem concerning technology that can be easily solved if one opts for a Tolkienian approach to the problem, that is, from a rather mundane or everyday dimension of humanity (or “hobbitry”, to be more precise)
The Role of Knowledge Management in Supply Chain Management: A Literature Review
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to examine the state of knowledge management research in
supply chain management from three standpoints, methodological approach, supply chain
management area, and knowledge management processes.
Design/methodology/approach: To achieve this, a systematic review is conducted over the
period 2000-2014 on the basis of a qualitative content analysis.
Findings: Major results showed that knowledge management can be viewed as a leverage
mechanism for: (i) supply chain integration; (ii) the enhancement of intra and inter-relations across
the supply chain; (iii) supply chain strategy alignment; and (iv) the reinforcement of knowledge
transfer in product development. Some supply chain management areas such as reverse logistics,
inventory management, forecasting/demand planning, outsourcing, and risk management have
been explored only to some extent. Furthermore, knowledge transfer is being studied in the
majority of the articles, mainly by both case study and survey approach; mathematical models and
simulation techniques are used in very limited articles. Findings concerning theoretical
perspectives and managerial issues are also described. Research limitations/implications: The limitation of our study encompasses the aspects of
search period (2000-2014), selection of search databases (Web of Science and SCOPUS and
language selection (English).
Practical implications: The exhibition of the KM processes within the SC context may help
practitioners and managers interested in implementing KM initiatives to replicate the
methodologies in order to increase the possibilities of a successful KM adoption.
Originality/value: The systematic review will contribute to the understanding of the present
state of research in the knowledge management theory, with focus on the supply chain, as there
are no state-of-knowledge studies that report a systematic literature review approach.Peer Reviewe
Stellar-Mass Black Holes in the Solar Neighborhood
We search for nearby, isolated, accreting, ``stellar-mass'' (3 to
) black holes. Models suggest a synchrotron spectrum in visible
wavelengths and some emission in X-ray wavelengths. Of 3.7 million objects in
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, about 150,000 objects have
colors and properties consistent with such a spectrum, and 87 of these objects
are X-ray sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Thirty-two of these have been
confirmed not to be black-holes using optical spectra. We give the positions
and colors of these 55 black-hole candidates, and quantitatively rank them on
their likelihood to be black holes. We discuss uncertainties the expected
number of sources, and the contribution of blackholes to local dark matter.Comment: Replaced with version accepted by ApJ. 40 pages, 8 figure
Introduction: There are no studies in Chile that quantify the prevalence of pre-sarcopenic obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of pre-sarcopenic obesity in Chilean elderly people.
Methodology: 240 people ≥ 60 years from the Chilean National Health Survey 2016-2017 were included. Pre-sarcopenia was estimated with the handgrip test and obesity was defined using waist circumference. As a sensitivity analysis, obesity was classified in a subsample of 129 people using the BMI. Based on the obesity and muscle strength criteria, the participants were categorized as: normal; obese/ normal; normal/pre-sarcopenia and obesity/pre-sarcopenia.
Results: 22.6% of the population presented obesity/pre-sarcopenia using waist circumference as a diagnostic parameter. The prevalence of pre-sarcopenic obesity was higher in women (22.9%), in older people (33.0%), with urban residence (22.8%), and lower educational levels (37.3%). By incorporating the BMI as an obesity criterion, a decrease in the prevalence of pre-sarcopenic obesity (12.2%) and a higher percentage of women with this phenotype were identified.
Conclusions: The prevalence of pre-sarcopenic obesity was identified in 22.6% of the older Chilean population included. Considering the role of obesity and sarcopenia in the development of non-communicable diseases, its identification and early detection could allow the creation of interventions that favor the survival and health of the elderly.
