Effect of short-term probiotic Enterococcus faecium SF68 dietary supplementation in overweight and obese cats without comorbidities
Obesity in cats is associated with metabolic abnormalities and increased susceptibility to diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Studies in mouse models and human beings have shown that probiotics can reduce food intake, promote weight loss and improve metabolic profile. Studies assessing the effects of probiotics on these same parameters are absent in cats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if probiotic Enterococcus faecium strain SF68 dietary supplementation reduces food intake, promotes weight loss and improves metabolic profile in overweight and obese cats without comorbidities. Twenty overweight and obese specific pathogen-free cats without comorbidities were acclimatised to a dry diet for four weeks. After exclusion of four cats for unrelated reasons, eight cats received a daily oral probiotic for eight weeks and eight control cats received no probiotic. All cats were fed ad libitum with food intake measured daily and bodyweight weekly. Blood was collected at three time points: after four weeks of acclimatisation to the diet, after eight weeks of intervention and after six weeks of washout for measurement of glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, fructosamine, insulin, leptin, total adiponectin and deuterium oxide for body composition. There were no differences in food intake, metabolic parameters and body composition between the probiotic and control groups after eight weeks of intervention and six weeks of washout (P≥0.050). Short-term use of E faecium SF68 dietary supplementation had no significant effect on food intake, bodyweight, body composition or metabolic parameters in overweight and obese specific pathogen-free cats without comorbidities
Exact String Solutions in Nontrivial Backgrounds
We show how the classical string dynamics in -dimensional gravity
background can be reduced to the dynamics of a massless particle constrained on
a certain surface whenever there exists at least one Killing vector for the
background metric. We obtain a number of sufficient conditions, which ensure
the existence of exact solutions to the equations of motion and constraints.
These results are extended to include the Kalb-Ramond background. The
-brane dynamics is also analyzed and exact solutions are found. Finally, we
illustrate our considerations with several examples in different dimensions.

Analysis of data systems requirements for global crop production forecasting in the 1985 time frame
Data systems concepts that would be needed to implement the objective of the global crop production forecasting in an orderly transition from experimental to operational status in the 1985 time frame were examined. Information needs of users were converted into data system requirements, and the influence of these requirements on the formulation of a conceptual data system was analyzed. Any potential problem areas in meeting these data system requirements were identified in an iterative process
A Short Note on the Potential for a Momentum Based Investment Strategy in Sector ETFs
The focus of this research is on the enhanced one-year average annual return performance of Select Sector SDPR EFFs with the highest average annual realized return over the previous five-year period [MaxRet strategy]. From 2004 through 2015, the MaxRet strategy generates a higher average annual total return than an equal weight portfolio [EW strategy] of the same sector funds. The average annual return for the MaxRet strategy is 14.13% compared to 9.75% for the EW strategy. In addition, the coefficient of variation [CV] for the MaxRet and EW strategies are 1.52 and 1.59 respectively. The MaxRet strategy, therefore, is a more efficient strategy in that it generates less standard deviation risk per unit of average annual return than the EW strategy over the study period. Measures of downside risk further support the enhanced out-of-sample performance of the MaxRet strategy
Low-background temperature sensors fabricated on parylene substrates
Temperature sensors fabricated from ultra-low radioactivity materials have
been developed for low-background experiments searching for neutrinoless
double-beta decay and the interactions of WIMP dark matter. The sensors consist
of electrical traces photolithographically-patterned onto substrates of
vapor-deposited parylene. They are demonstrated to function as expected, to do
so reliably and robustly, and to be highly radio-pure. This work is a
proof-of-concept study of a technology that can be applied to broad class of
electronic circuits used in low-background experiments
Non-linear optomechanical measurement of mechanical motion
Precision measurement of non-linear observables is an important goal in all
facets of quantum optics. This allows measurement-based non-classical state
preparation, which has been applied to great success in various physical
systems, and provides a route for quantum information processing with otherwise
linear interactions. In cavity optomechanics much progress has been made using
linear interactions and measurement, but observation of non-linear mechanical
degrees-of-freedom remains outstanding. Here we report the observation of
displacement-squared thermal motion of a micro-mechanical resonator by
exploiting the intrinsic non-linearity of the radiation pressure interaction.
Using this measurement we generate bimodal mechanical states of motion with
separations and feature sizes well below 100~pm. Future improvements to this
approach will allow the preparation of quantum superposition states, which can
be used to experimentally explore collapse models of the wavefunction and the
potential for mechanical-resonator-based quantum information and metrology

Continuous star cluster formation in the spiral NGC 45
We determined ages for 52 star clusters with masses < 10^6 solar masses in
the low surface brightness spiral galaxy NGC 45. Four of these candidates are
old globular clusters located in the bulge. The remaining ones span a large age
range. The cluster ages suggest a continuous star/cluster formation history
without evidence for bursts, consistent with the galaxy being located in a
relatively unperturbed environment in the outskirts of the Sculptor group.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. To appear in "Island Universes - Structure and

Null Strings in Schwarzschild Spacetime
The null string equations of motion and constraints in the Schwarzschild
spacetime are given. The solutions are those of the null geodesics of General
Relativity appended by a null string constraint in which the "constants of
motion" depend on the world-sheet spatial coordinate. Because of the extended
nature of a string, the physical interpretation of the solutions is completely
different from the point particle case. In particular, a null string is
generally not propagating in a plane through the origin, although each of its
individual points is. Some special solutions are obtained and their physical
interpretation is given. Especially, the solution for a null string with a
constant radial coordinate moving vertically from the south pole to the
north pole around the photon sphere, is presented. A general discussion of
classical null/tensile strings as compared to massless/massive particles is
given. For instance, tensile circular solutions with a constant radial
coordinate do not exist at all. The results are discussed in relation to

Computer and photogrammetric general land use study of central north Alabama
The object of this report is to acquaint potential users with two computer programs, developed at NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center. They were used in producing a land use survey and maps of central north Alabama from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) digital data. The report describes in detail the thought processes and analysis procedures used from the initiation of the land use study to its completion, as well as a photogrammetric study that was used in conjunction with the computer analysis to produce similar land use maps. The results of the land use demonstration indicate that, with respect to computer time and cost, such a study may be economically and realistically feasible on a statewide basis
Mapping the Asymmetric Thick Disk I. A Search for Triaxiality
A significant asymmetry in the distribution of faint blue stars in the inner
Galaxy, Quadrant 1 (l = 20 to 45 degrees) compared to Quadrant 4 was first
reported by Larsen & Humphreys (1996). Parker et al (2003, 2004) greatly
expanded the survey to determine its spatial extent and shape and the
kinematics of the affected stars. This excess in the star counts was
subsequently confirmed by Juric et al. (2008) using SDSS data. Possible
explanations for the asymmetry include a merger remnant, a triaxial Thick Disk,
and a possible interaction with the bar in the Disk. In this paper we describe
our program of wide field photometry to map the asymmetry to fainter magnitudes
and therefore larger distances. To search for the signature of triaxiality, we
extended our survey to higher Galactic longitudes. We find no evidence for an
excess of faint blue stars at l > 55 degrees including the faintest magnitude
interval. The asymmetry and star count excess in Quadrant 1 is thus not due to
