Adaptive Regularization in Neural Network Modeling
. In this paper we address the important problem of optimizing regularization parameters in neural network modeling. The suggested optimization scheme is an extended version of the recently presented algorithm [24]. The idea is to minimize an empirical estimate -- like the cross-validation estimate -- of the generalization error with respect to regularization parameters. This is done by employing a simple iterative gradient descent scheme using virtually no additional programming overhead compared to standard training. Experiments with feed-forward neural network models for time series prediction and classification tasks showed the viability and robustness of the algorithm. Moreover, we provided some simple theoretical examples in order to illustrate the potential and limitations of the proposed regularization framework. 1 Introduction Neural networks are flexible tools for time series processing and pattern recognition. Western esoterism : Ultimate Sacred Postulates and Ritual Fields
The greater part of Western Esoterism holds beliefs in five important matrices. This branch of esoterism, rooted in a Hermetic milieu, is labelled dialectical esoterism because of the dialectical relationship between the âlowerâ (man, earth) and the âhigherâ (heaven, the divine, God). These five matrices are: I: Purpose (pronoia), rather than karma or sin. II: The dialectical relationship between Man and God (or the divine), including the healing of other people, society and/or the Earth. III: The inter-dependency of Dualism and Monism, including the mind and/or the world as a stairway to heaven. IV: Scientific laws are synonymous with spiritual principles. V: The holistic cosmos, including the concept of âsympathyâ between its parts. The aim of this thesis is to make clear that Western Esoterism is unique because of the presence of the five matrices and deals with both âbeliefsâ (recognition) and âdoingâ (religious practices, e.g. astrology, alchemy, magic and clairvoyance). As a consequence it is also demonstrated that foreign religious ideas and practices can be assimilated because they are transformed and hence adopt new meanings in order to fit the important USP of Western Esoterism
Bio Environmental implications of shipping in the European Arctic
Paper IV of this thesis is not available in Munin.
Paper IV: Larsen, L-H., Cusa, M., Eglund-Newby, S., Berge, J., Renaud, P. E., Falk-Petersen, S., Varpe, Ă.: âFeeding activity and diet of gadoid fish in Svalbard waters
during the polar nightâ. (Manuscript).Ocean shipping has for centuries been essential to mankind, and is the most efficient way of transporting goods across the world. With increasing global temperatures, the Arctic ice cap is reduced in thickness and extent, making Arctic shipping more feasible. The thesis looks into the biological and environmental implications of shipping in the European Arctic Seas. A scenario involving a shipping accident where a merchant vessel running on Marine Diesel Oil is wrecked, provides the input to modelling of the spread of contaminants through a shallow water Arctic marine ecosystem. The modelling exercise is supported by data on accumulation and excretion of PAH in a key predator of the ecosystem, generated through laboratory experiments. Data measured at an actual spill of diesel in the Arctic is also applied. Shipping in a future warmer Arctic is projected to include navigation during polar night, a period poorly covered by biological data. The study presents data on polar night fish feeding activity from five years of January sampling in the waters off Svalbard, indicating high biological activity and potentially similar vulnerability of the ecosystem during polar night as during the light part of the year
