    Platelets and thrombogenesis--Current concepts

Anticoagulants, although effective in the treatment of venous thrombotic disease, have not been generally helpful in preventing arterial thrombosis. The reason for this disparity may lie in the type of clot formed in each case. In veins a "red thrombus" is formed, consisting of erythrocytes, leukocytes, fibrin, and platelets randomly distributed, whereas in arteries a "white thrombus" consisting mainly of platelets and fibrin strands is the obstructing lesion1. The predominance of platelets in this "white" clot has focused attention on their importance in arterial occlusion and has suggested that therapeutic maneuvers directed at platelet function may be more useful than standard anticoagulant therapy. This review presents the recent advances in the study of platelet morphology and function, and concludes by discussing possible therapeutic avenues.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/34128/1/0000412.pd

Effects of Background Music on the Memory and Interpretation of Ambiguous Movie Scenes

    No full text
The present study investigates the effects of background music on the interpretation and\ud memory of ambiguous movie scenes. Forty-eight subjects watched three short, ambiguous film\ud clips accompanied by either positive, negative, or no music. The subjects were then asked to\ud extrapolate the ending of each film, evaluate the personality and motivations of the main\ud character(s), and complete a series ofbipolar adjective scales about each scene. The subjects\ud were brought back a week later for a surprise memory recognition task to test their memory of\ud certain objects from each scene. Results from the interpretation and adjective rating tasks suggest\ud that relative to a control group (i.e. no music) positive music led to a more positive interpretations\ud and adjective ratings while negative music led to a more negative interpretations and adjective\ud ratings. The results of the "hits" and the "false alarms" from the memory task revealed that\ud subjects remembered more positive items, regardless of the experimental condition. These\ud findings are discussed in terms of the schematic influences of music which in turn suggest a\ud number of ideas for future research

The Hessian Fly and the Illinois Wheat Crop

    Get PDF
The Hessian Fly, an insect that infests practically all of the large wheat-growing areas of the world, was first found in North America on Long Island in 1779 and was probably brought into this country in the straw used by the Hessian Troops sent here during the Revolutionary War. It was first recorded in Illinois in 1844, according to Webster, and it has been a factor in wheat production in this State ever since that time.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe
