Solubility of nickel in slags equilibrated with Ni-S melt
To provide thermodynamic data for converting the nickel matte to liquid nickel, an experimental study was conducted in the phase equilibrium between the Ni-S melt and FeOX-SiO2, FeOX-CaO or CaO-Al2O3 based slag melted in a magnesia crucible at 1773 and 1873 K. pSO2 was controlled at 10.1 kPa while pO2 and pS2 ranged between those where NiO precipitated and Ni3S2 formed, respectively. The nickel content in the slag and the sulfur content in the metal at given pO2 and pS2 were smallest for the CaO-Al2O3 based slag. Both decreased with increasing temperature. At 1873 K, the content of nickel in the CaO-Al2O3 based slag at pO2 of 10 Pa (near the precipitation of NiO) was 4%, while the content of sulfur in alloy is 0.4 mass %. Thus, the CaO-Al2O3 base slag at 1873 K would be suitable for direct converting of Ni3S2 to metallic nickel. The distribution behavior of nickel between the slag and the Ni-S melt was discussed based on the concept of oxidic and sulfidic dissolution
Patterns of MUC1 tissue expression defined by an Anti-MUC1 cytoplasmic tail monoclonal antibody in breast cancer
Our aim was to determine the pattern of expression of MUC1 mucin cytoplasmic tail (MUC1 CT) in breast carcinoma. A total of 98 invasive breast adenocarcinoma tumor samples were assayed by immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. The pattern of reaction was classified as membrane, cytoplasmic, or mixed. Subcellular fractions were prepared after SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. The antibodies employed were anti-MUC1 CT (CT2 monoclonal antibody, MAb) and C595 MAb against the extracellular MUC1 core protein. With the CT2 MAb, IHC showed a high percentage of positive staining in 93% of specimens, with membrane staining the most common pattern observed. C595 MAb was reactive in 73% of specimens. Similar percentages of membrane and cytoplasmic staining were found, mainly in a mixed pattern. Western blotting showed different bands. With the CT2 MAb, the membrane fraction showed the most intense reaction; a strong band of reaction was detected at approximately <30 kD. With the C595 MAb, in most cases a double band at 200 kD was found. In breast epithelium, the pattern of MUC1 CT expression may constitute an indicator of MUC1 production because it does not depend on glycosylation. Material implication of Chileâs economic growth: combining material flow accounting (MFA) and structural decomposition analysis
Over the last three decades, the economic integration of the Chilean economy into global markets has been taking place at a rapid pace. For example, in 1986, exports represented 29% of GDP while in 1996 they had increased to 38% of GDP. This period of time was characterized by strong economic growth with an average annual growth rate of about 10%. From a physical perspective, material requirements more than doubled from 220 to 500 million tons of direct material inputs (DMI) during the same decade (the rate of material growth requirements was around 13% per year).
The main objective of this study is to explain the changes in DMI by using a structural decomposition analysis (SDA). The changes in material flow accounting (MFA) were broken down into the effects caused by changes in resource use per unit of output (material intensity effect), changes between and within sectors (structural change effect), changes in the composition of final demand (mix effect), changes due to shifting shares of domestic final demand and export categories (category effect) and finally changes in the overall level of economic activities (level effects). The results, as a percentage of the total level of DMI used in 1986, indicate that economic growth was the major source of material changes (109%). The material intensity and category effects explained 31% and 14% of the increase, respectively. The increase in the material intensity is mainly due to a declining quality of ores in copper production. However, these components were partly compensated by the structure (â 14%) and mix (â 13%) effects. Therefore, for a Southern American country such as Chile, the main causes of these changes in material consumption have been a combination of the nature of economic growth along with an increase in export production and material intensity of production
Thinking political sociology: beyond the limits of post-Marxism
This article is concerned with post-Marxism and materialism in the work of Judith Butler, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. As âpost-Marxistsâ these writers use âmaterialâ in a variety of ways, all of which indicate limits and constraints. The article focuses on one version of âmaterialismâ in this work, a version that is more implied than elaborated, in which âmaterialâ is equivalent to institutionalized performativity or sedimented discourse: to âobjectiveâ social structures and institutions. Post-Marxists often use âthe socialâ as equivalent to âmaterialâ in this sense, to gesture towards the context in which politics succeeds or fails. I argue that the speciïŹcities of âthe socialâ cannot be theorized from within the terms of post-Marxism itself and that Butler and Laclau acknowledge this limitation in their most recent work. I therefore conclude that post-Marxism needs a supplement that I call political sociology. This is a dangerous supplement in the Derridean sense: a necessary addition that destabilizes the value post-Marxism gives to the distinction between âsocialâ and âpoliticalâ in which the latter is the privileged term
