    The Necessity of Moral Marxism

    Get PDF
Doesn’t Marxism need morality? This article takes a look at anti-moral and moral approaches available to Marxists. The Anti-moralist Allen W. Wood believes Marxists make value judgments based on non-moral goods. But this non-moral goods category, when applied, allows for lots of ambiguity concerning goods. Worse, theories that mention non-moral goods usually relate such goods to self-interest, but how can it be in one’s self interest to postpone individual self-satisfaction?—what Marxism theoretically entails. Also, doesn’t the Marxist need an ought, thereby making her or her a moralist? The question becomes which direction should moral Marxism take? An appeal to natural rights? Utilitarian? Kantian? Such options can meet Marxism’s central tenets, but Marxism itself cannot tell us what the right choice is. But that is not a problem. The important thing is that Marxism is compatible with some moral systems in such a way that all such systems compel persons to embrace the Marxist rationality

Distal Femoral Osteotomy with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy: A Multifaceted Therapeutic Approach

    Get PDF
Background and Purpose: The surgical procedure known as a distal femoral osteotomy has been shown to be effective in treating valgus deformities of the knee with osteoarthritis in younger, active patients. But with any procedure, unsuspected complications such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) can make rehabilitation for the patients and their therapists challenging. This study focuses on taking a multifaceted approach to treating all of the underlying impairments of a patient with recurring knee pathologies and an underlying secondary diagnosis of CRPS. Case Description: The patient is a 38-year-old female who has had multiple surgeries on her left knee, the most recent of which being a left distal femoral osteotomy. She has also experienced symptoms of CRPS after each of her surgeries, causing her to have muscle weakness and extreme sensitivity to touch in her left leg. Discussion: The patient\u27s CRPS made it difficult to perform any interventions that involved touching her skin. Thus, it was crucial to get her sensitivity under control in order to make significant progress in dealing with her other impairments. This case study demonstrates the importance of taking all of a patient\u27s comorbidities into account when making a treatment plan

Borges and the Basques: Notes on Reading an Invisible Literature

    Get PDF
Critics and readers sometimes unnecessarily limit the scope of what is to be counted as “Basque literature” to texts originally composed in Euskera. In the present study I argue for a hermeneutics of Basque literature that does not seek to identify Basque literature by means of the language of composition, theme, or any particular biographical information about the author. Taking the work of Jorge Luis Borges as a touchstone—and , in particular, his canonical short story, “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote”—I sketch a strategy for reading Basque literature from a minimalist perspective that takes the identity of a Basque literary text to be a function of its capacity to read from a Basque perspective, broadly defined

Sensational Hiking: Collaborating with Community Organizations to Provide Sensory Information to Enhance the Trail Evaluation Process

    Get PDF
Accessibility is about more than just physical access to places where people live, work, and play. It’s also about having access to sufficient information to make an informed decision. Community organization Access Recreation, is setting the precedent for providing information regarding nature and hiking trails so people of all abilities can enjoy outdoor recreation. An occupational therapy practitioner enhanced their efforts by educating them on sensory systems, and how deficits in this area may impact the hiking experience of a client with sensory processing disorder, or sensory sensitivities. Occupational therapy practitioners across the world can join similar efforts and utilize these resources with clients with a range of limitations. The therapeutic effects of nature are well known, and pairing physical exercise or therapy interventions with exposure to natural environments could be more beneficial than traditional therapies, or offer a new context to learn in

Time-Series Intervention Analysis Using ITSACORR: Fatal Flaws

    Get PDF
The ITSACORR method (Crosbie, 1993, 1995) is evaluated for the analysis of two-phase interrupted time-series designs. It is shown that each component of the ITSACORR framework (including the structural model, the design matrix, the autocorrelation estimator, the ultimate parameter estimation scheme, and the inferential method) contains fatal flaws

INSCO Group Seal Stamping Process Design

It is not unusual for a company to miss out on potential profits simply because they cannot produce a desired quantity with the equipment they own. In some instances, a manufacturers process is streamlined to the point where overproduction becomes a possibility. Efficient companies have the luxury of being able to meet demand quotas, stockpile product for future orders, and spend time on research and development projects. How well a system is designed can either lift a company to monopolistic power or quickly send it into bankruptcy. Businesses that rely on manufacturing products as means of revenue must stick to a very precise set of specifications as a model but be able to flex to a changing market or any problems that may arise. The project in question focuses on the Insco Niantic Group in Lincoln, Rhode Island. The company produces a variety of mechanical seal components such as o-rings, gaskets, and other miscellaneous products. Insco does not produce considerably large batches of a single type of seal because their customer base only requests small batches of custom made seals. This prevents the company from being able to stockpile product for later dates because it is impossible to anticipate demand of such a volatile commodity. Instead of designing a system to pump out large quantities of seals, it would be a better idea to design a system that can quickly change what product is being produced. The most time consuming portion of a batch of any size is the preparation period. During prep time, the seal presses must be loaded with the appropriate die punch, controlling program, and calibrated to prevent failure. Raw material must also be sized down to a width that the seal press is capable of handling. In short the goal of this project is not to increase production speed but rather upgrade the rate at which different products can be produced

thesisThe South Fork of the Ogden River area is in eastern Weber County , Utah approximately two miles east of the town of Huntsville and comprises a portion of the northcentral Wasatch Mountains. The rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre- cambrian to Quaternary. The Precambrian consists of quart- zite, quartzitic sandstone, arkosite, and phyllite (10,000-feet) ; the Cambrian rocks are meta-quartzite', limestone, dolomite and shale (3500 feet); the Ordovician is limestone5 dolomite and shale (600+feet); the Silurian rocks are largely arenaceous dolomite (243- feet); the Devonian is dolomite, arenaceous limestone and dolomite, sandstone, and shale (1144 feet); the Mississippian system is represented largely by limestone and sandstone (3300- feet); the Pennsylvanian is limestone and sandstone. The Eocene Knight (?) formation, which once covered the entire area, is a cobble and boulder conglomerate with sandstone lenses; Quaternary deposits consist of Lake Bonneville sediments and alluvium. The Upper Cambrian and base of the Ordovician are not exposed in the area. The Paleozoic strata were found to correlate with the formations of the Logan auadrangle. Detailed measured sections are included. Except for minor disconformities, sedimentation was probably continuous from Precambrian to Pennsylvanian time. No evidence for an unconformity could be found at the base of the Cambrian. The area is located very near the southern limit of Ordovician and Silurian deposition; neither system is represented in the Uinta Mountains to the south. The most important structural feature of the area is a north-trending syncline. The trace of the Willard (?) thrust is believed to be exposed in the western part of the area near Ogden Valley

Implications of Customer and Entrepreneurial Orientations for SME Growth

    Get PDF
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to empirically investigate how the business orientations of customer orientation (CO) (represented by responsiveness to customers) and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) (represented by proactiveness, innovativeness and risk‐taking) impact the growth of SMEs. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a quantitative empirical approach, using structural equation modeling with the software package AMOS to analyze the results of 660 surveyed SMEs from Austria. Findings – This analysis reveals that EO is positively related to SME growth but CO shows a negative association with growth. Moreover, this analysis suggests that SMEs grow the most if they exhibit high EO and low CO. Research limitations/implications – This analysis shows that CO, interpreted as a purely responsive and reactive construct, cannot be considered a strategy that leads to sustainable SME growth. If an SME desires growth, EO is needed to fuel these growth aspirations. In spite of these findings however, this study shows that SMEs tend to respond to a scarcity of financial resources with more CO and less EO, which then leads to less or even negative growth. Practical implications – Sustainable firm growth seems impossible without an EO. However, this does not mean that CO is not of any value for SMEs. Being non‐entrepreneurially oriented does not mean that a firm is automatically customer oriented. So, it is not only about implementing CO or EO since there is still the third option: implementing neither. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the ongoing scholarly conversation on the value of different orientations to firms and takes the view that the conversation on CO and EO has mis‐specified business performance in seeking to understand their performance consequences. By looking at firm growth, relevant to the longer‐term performance of a firm, EO might drive growth because of its emphasis on innovation to renew the firm's growth trajectory whereas CO might stifle growth owing to its myopic focus. Thus, this study addresses calls in the business and entrepreneurship literatures to more fully understand how SMEs can capture value from their customer and entrepreneurial orientations

Differing Air Traffic Controller Responses to Similar Trajectory Prediction Errors: An Interrupted Time-Series Analysis of Controller Behavior

    Get PDF
A Human-In-The-Loop simulation was conducted in January of 2013 in the Airspace Operations Laboratory at NASAs Ames Research Center. The simulation airspace included two en route sectors feeding the northwest corner of Atlantas Terminal Radar Approach Control. The focus of this paper is on how uncertainties in the studys trajectory predictions impacted the controllers ability to perform their duties. Of particular interest is how the controllers interacted with the delay information displayed in the meter list and data block while managing the arrival flows. Due to wind forecasts with 20-knot over-predictions and 20-knot under-predictions, delay value computations included errors of similar magnitude, albeit in opposite directions. However, when performing their duties in the presence of these errors, did the controllers issue clearances of similar magnitude, albeit in opposite directions
