Herbivory increases diversification across insect clades.

    Get PDF
Insects contain more than half of all living species, but the causes of their remarkable diversity remain poorly understood. Many authors have suggested that herbivory has accelerated diversification in many insect clades. However, others have questioned the role of herbivory in insect diversification. Here, we test the relationships between herbivory and insect diversification across multiple scales. We find a strong, positive relationship between herbivory and diversification among insect orders. However, herbivory explains less variation in diversification within some orders (Diptera, Hemiptera) or shows no significant relationship with diversification in others (Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera). Thus, we support the overall importance of herbivory for insect diversification, but also show that its impacts can vary across scales and clades. In summary, our results illuminate the causes of species richness patterns in a group containing most living species, and show the importance of ecological impacts on diversification in explaining the diversity of life

    Behavior Plans and Human Rights

    Get PDF
There are many individuals who are not aware of the rights that all humans have. The focus of this paper is to educate these individuals on individuals with disabilities rights and how they can still be supported without their rights being violated. Individuals with disabilities do not always know and understand what their rights are. This paper will encourage others to advocate on their behalf and kill the myth that individuals with disabilities do not have the same rights as individuals without disabilities. Needs Assessment Of A Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program In The Near Southside Neighborhood In Grand Forks, ND

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the needs of a Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) Program to help the elderly successfully age-in-place in the Near Southside Neighborhood (NSS) in Grand Forks, North Dakota. As aging becomes increasingly an issue of concern, establishing a NHN Program in the NSS would help the elderly remain independent in their own home and community. The NHN Program is a specialized program designed to provide aging services to those who are in need through community engagement. Through surveys, data was collected in the Grand Forks Area and the NSS. The first survey was conducted at the Grand Forks Senior Center to gather information on what aging services are important to help seniors in the Grand Forks Area. The second survey, distributed by mail, was sent to the residents of the NSS. This survey produced a variety of information including; the desire to start a program to help the seniors; what services are necessary; what skills does the neighborhood possess; and interest level of volunteering. These data are the core for the needs assessment to help the elderly in the NSS. It is anticipated that this study will help people understand the need for a NHN Program and will promote community engagement between neighbors and residents within the NSS. Consequently, the NSS will have a chance to review the research and findings to assess whether or not implementation of the NHN Program is feasible

UniverSol: The Birth of a New Genre

    Get PDF
For years, many people have listened to different kinds of music and decided they may not like a certain genre because of how it sounds. The purpose of this project is to bridge the gap between all genres by creating a new genre called “UniverSol”. An extended play (EP) of the UniverSol genre will be created and published on streaming sites such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp, along with a videotape that documents the production experience.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-production-technology/1071/thumbnail.jp

ReportOur project includes a complete kit to be shared by all interested in the IPM project we have produced. Our goal is to better inform students about soil and the organisms in and on the soil and also help them understand that the way we treat soil and plants makes an impact on our environment. The kit contains: An original play for school age children where the audience becomes characters in the play. A ‘how to video’ to help with background material; IPM information and ideas for developing the play, encouraging the facilitators to make it their own production. Reproducible drawings of organism that the audience participants will wear. An activity book (“The Bug-tivity Newspaper”) that is passed out to the audience. It contains IPM and good-bug, bad-bug information, experiments and other fun activities for the family that helps them understand more about our environment and how the choices we make affect it

(In)Hospitable: Refugees as Guests in Germany Today

    Get PDF
This project aims to examine how refugees in Germany are conceptualized by the government and the larger population as ‘guests’, and are seen as beneficiaries of German hospitality. Using Jacques Derrida’s Of Hospitality and Mireille Rosello’s Postcolonial Hospitality as a theoretical framework, and guided by interviews conducted by myself with young male refugees living in Berlin, this project deconstruct the selective hospitality offered by Germany and demonstrate how refugees are conceived as impermanent in German society, and are forced to adhere to set notions of guesthood

Learning Communities: Factors Influencing Faculty Involvement

    Get PDF
The debate in higher education has inspired broad discussion about the quality of undergraduate education. Several of these criticisms have focused on a lack of curricular coherency, an emphasis on research versus teaching, and intellectual isolationism within the academic community. The debate has inspired broad discussion and questions the overall quality of undergraduate education in this country. One attempt by some institutions of higher education to counter these criticisms is through the development of various curricular structures referred to as learning communities. Learning communities represent a structural response to curricular fragmentation by promoting curricular coherence, intellectual and social community, and sense of common purpose within the academic environment. The research on learning communities as been limited in identifying factors which prompt faculty to become involved in this kind of teaching and learning structure. The purpose of this research study is to provide additional insights on variables that influence faculty involvement in learning communities. Three variable sets—faculty background, structural, and organization/environmental—frame the theoretical basis for the research study
