Observation of ferromagnetic resonance in strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3)
We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in SrRuO3 using
the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The FMR oscillations in the
time-domain appear in response to a sudden, optically induced change in the
direction of easy-axis anistropy. The high FMR frequency, 250 GHz, and large
Gilbert damping parameter, alpha ~ 1, are consistent with strong spin-orbit
coupling. We find that the parameters associated with the magnetization
dynamics, including alpha, have a non-monotonic temperature dependence,
suggestive of a link to the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Determination of the spin-flip time in ferromagnetic SrRuO3 from time-resolved Kerr measurements
We report time-resolved Kerr effect measurements of magnetization dynamics in
ferromagnetic SrRuO3. We observe that the demagnetization time slows
substantially at temperatures within 15K of the Curie temperature, which is ~
150K. We analyze the data with a phenomenological model that relates the
demagnetization time to the spin flip time. In agreement with our observations
the model yields a demagnetization time that is inversely proportional to T-Tc.
We also make a direct comparison of the spin flip rate and the Gilbert damping
coefficient showing that their ratio very close to kBTc, indicating a common
origin for these phenomena
Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa Cu O grown on top of La Ca MnO
Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus
mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk
properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray
scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between
the in-plane Cu spins in YBa Cu O (YBCO) superconductor when it
is grown on top of ferromagnetic La Ca MnO (LCMO) manganite
layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of
YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed
in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La Ca interfacial
termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct
energetic of CuO chain and CuO plane at the La Ca and
MnO terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer
of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings
suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial
engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized
Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the
competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems.Comment: Please note the change of the title. Text might be slightly different

Ferromagnetic Enhancement of CE-type Spin Ordering in (Pr,Ca)MnO
We present resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) results from small band
width manganites (Pr,Ca)MnO, which show that the CE-type spin ordering (SO)
at the phase boundary is stabilized only below the canted antiferromagnetic
transition temperature and enhanced by ferromagnetism in the macroscopically
insulating state (FM-I). Our results reveal the fragility of the CE-type
ordering that underpins the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in this
system, as well as an unexpected cooperative interplay between FM-I and CE-type
SO which is in contrast to the competitive interplay between the ferromagnetic
metallic (FM-M) state and CE-type ordering.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Comparison of level discrimination, increment detection, and comodulation masking release in the audio- and envelope-frequency domains
In general, the temporal structure of stimuli must be considered to account for certain observations made in detection and masking experiments in the audio-frequency domain. Two such phenomena are (1) a heightened sensitivity to amplitude increments with a temporal fringe compared to gated level discrimination performance and (2) lower tone-in-noise detection thresholds using a modulated masker compared to those using an unmodulated masker. In the current study, translations of these two experiments were carried out to test the hypothesis that analogous cues might be used in the envelope-frequency domain. Pure-tone carrier amplitude-modulation (AM) depth-discrimination thresholds were found to be similar using both traditional gated stimuli and using a temporally modulated fringe for a fixed standard depth (m(s)=0.25) and a range of AM frequencies (4-64 Hz). In a second experiment, masked sinusoidal AM detection thresholds were compared in conditions with and without slow and regular fluctuations imposed on the instantaneous masker AM depth. Release from masking was obtained only for very slow masker fluctuations (less than 2 Hz). A physiologically motivated model that effectively acts as a first-order envelope change detector accounted for several, but not all, of the key aspects of the data

Challenges of Misbehavior Detection in Industrial Wireless Networks
In recent years, wireless technologies are increasingly adopted in many application domains that were either unconnected before or exclusively used cable networks. This paradigm shift towards - often ad-hoc - wireless communication has led to significant benefits in terms of flexibility and mobility. Alongside with these benefits, however, arise new attack vectors, which cannot be mitigated by traditional security measures.
Hence, mechanisms that are orthogonal to cryptographic security techniques are necessary in order to detect adversaries. In traditional networks, such mechanisms are subsumed under the term "intrusion detection system" and many proposals have been implemented for different application domains. More recently, the term "misbehavior detection" has been coined to encompass detection mechanisms especially for attacks in wireless networks.
In this paper, we use industrial wireless networks as an exemplary application domain to discuss new directions and future challenges in detecting insider attacks. To that end, we review existing work on intrusion detection in mobile ad-hoc networks. We focus on physical-layer-based detection mechanisms as these are a particularly interesting research direction that had not been reasonable before widespread use of wireless technology.Peer Reviewe
Advances in small lasers

In recent years there has been significant progress towards reducing the size and improving the characteristics of these devices. This work has been led primarily by the innovative use of new materials and cavity designs. This Review summarizes some of the latest developments, particularly in metallic and plasmonic lasers, improvements in small dielectric lasers, and the emerging area of small bio-compatible or bio-derived lasers. We examine the different approaches employed to reduce size and how they result in significant differences in the final device, particularly between metal- and dielectric-cavity lasers. We also present potential applications for the various forms of small lasers, and indicate where further developments are required.PostprintPeer reviewe
Renal cell cancer without a renal primary
Renal cell carcinoma has been increasing in incidence over the past two decades. Men are affected more than women and metastatic disease at presentation occurs in up to one third of patients. Metastasis can occur to virtually any organ, and involvement of multiple organs is not uncommon. To date, no reports have been found of metastatic disease without a renal primary. We present a case of renal cell cancer initially presenting as a subcutaneous mass with subsequent pancreatic and parotid gland metastases in absence of a primary renal source
