Discovering predictive variables when evolving cognitive models

    Get PDF
A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm is used to evolve models of learning from different theories for multiple tasks. Correlation analysis is performed to identify parameters which affect performance on specific tasks; these are the predictive variables. Mutation is biased so that changes to parameter values tend to preserve values within the population's current range. Experimental results show that optimal models are evolved, and also that uncovering predictive variables is beneficial in improving the rate of convergence

Wave Propagation in Auxetic Tetrachiral Honeycombs

    Get PDF
This paper describes a numerical and experimental investigation on the flexural wave propagation properties of a novel class of negative Poisson's ratio honeycombs with tetrachiral topology. Tetrachiral honeycombs are structures defined by cylinders connected by four tangent ligaments, leading to a negative Poisson's ratio (auxetic) behavior in the plane due to combined cylinder rotation and bending of the ribs. A Bloch wave approach is applied to the representative unit cell of the honeycomb to calculate the dispersion characteristics and phase constant surfaces varying the geometric parameters of the unit cell. The modal density of the tetrachiral lattice and of a sandwich panel having the tetrachiral as core is extracted from the integration of the phase constant surfaces, and compared with the experimental ones obtained from measurements using scanning laser vibrometers

The Schwarzian derivative and the Wiman-Valiron property

    Get PDF
Consider a transcendental meromorphic function in the plane with finitely many critical values, such that the multiple points have bounded multiplicities and the inverse function has finitely many transcendental singularities. Using the Wiman-Valiron method it is shown that if the Schwarzian derivative is transcendental then the function has infinitely many multiple points, the inverse function does not have a direct transcendental singularity over infinity, and infinity is not a Borel exceptional value. The first of these conclusions was proved by Nevanlinna and Elfving via a fundamentally different method

Constituting monetary conservatives via the 'savings habit': New Labour and the British housing market bubble

    Get PDF
The ongoing world credit crunch might well kill off the most recent bubble dynamics in the British housing market by driving prices systematically downwards from their 2007 peak. Nonetheless, the experience of that bubble still warrants analytical attention. The Labour Government might not have been responsible for consciously creating it, but it has certainly grasped the opportunities the bubble has provided in an attempt to enforce a process of agential change at the heart of the British economy. The key issue in this respect is the way in which the Government has challenged the legitimacy of passive welfare receipts in favour of establishing a welfare system based on incorporating the individual into an active asset-holding society. The housing market has taken on new political significance as a means for individuals first to acquire assets and then to accumulate wealth on the back of asset ownership. The ensuing integration of the housing market into an increasingly reconfigured welfare system has permeated into the politics of everyday life. It has been consistent with individuals remaking their political subjectivities in line with preferences for the type of conservative monetary policies that typically keep house price bubbles inflated

Conductive Cellulose Composites with Low Percolation Threshold for 3D Printed Electronics

    Get PDF
We are reporting a 3D printable composite paste having strong thixotropic rheology. The composite has been designed and investigated with highly conductive silver nanowires. The optimized electrical percolation threshold from both simulation and experiment is shown from 0.7 vol. % of silver nanowires which is significantly lower than other composites using conductive nano-materials. Reliable conductivity of 1.19 × 102 S/cm has been achieved from the demonstrated 3D printable composite with 1.9 vol. % loading of silver nanowires. Utilizing the high conductivity of the printable composites, 3D printing of designed battery electrode pastes is demonstrated. Rheology study shows superior printability of the electrode pastes aided by the cellulose\u27s strong thixotropic rheology. The designed anode, electrolyte, and cathode pastes are sequentially printed to form a three-layered lithium battery for the demonstration of a charging profile. This study opens opportunities of 3D printable conductive materials to create printed electronics with the next generation additive manufacturing process

Mechanical Properties of Cheese, Cheese Analogues and Protein Gels in Relation to Composition and Microstructure

Samples of commercial Cheddar cheese, experimental Cheddar cheeses made from heated, ultrafiltration-concentrated mllks, processed cheese analogues and whey protein gels of defined composition were examined microscopically and some fracture and deformation properties were determined. Surfaces of cheese prepared by critical point drying and those examined frozen were comparable in microstructure. As the concentration factor of the milk used for experimental c heesemaking increased, the cheese became more resistant to reversible deformation, the work required to cut with a wire or break wf th a hammer increased and the microstructure showed that the protein matrix was coarser. The force to deform o r work to cut cheese analogues depended on the composition. The work to deform and break whey protein gels depended on the composition , microstructure and testing direction . In genera 1, gels containing more j.l-lactoglobult n were less easy to break and formed tighter gels. Microscopy of surfaces formed by impact fracture indicated that the combination of cutting and cracking may vary between samples
