Secondary attachments and adolescent self concept

This study examined the popular notion that crushes or secondary attachments to celebrity figures are an important aspect of self-concept development during adolescence. In a repeated measures design, 79 male and female 5th, 8th, and 11th graders and college sophomores completed a set of personality scales, first describing themselves and later, describing the favorite celebrity. Repeated measures multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) analysis of self-object congruence revealed no significant main or interaction effects for the type of attachment, gender, or age of subject. Significant within subject effects were obtained for the repeated measures factor (self-object congruence). Overall, students perceived their attachment objects to be more agentic, yet less expressive and emotionally vulnerable than themselves. MANOVA analyses indicated that males and older students perceived their attachment objects to be higher in agency than expressivity, whereas females and younger students perceived their attachment objects to be higher in expressivity than agency. These data indicate that the function served by secondary attachments in the development of self-concept may be quite similar for adolescent males and females.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45592/1/11199_2004_Article_BF00288191.pd

    No full text
International audienceThis seminar will focus on the texts written by Brazilian bacteriologist Osvaldo Cruz about his travels in the Amazon in the early twentieth century. Brazilian government sponsored several scientific trips to the country’s interior at the time, with the main interest to incorporate these areas into the larger national project. This had begun during the Brazilian Empire and continued when Brazil became a republic in 1889. Langfeldt’s presentation will start with a short biography of Osvaldo Cruz and an overview of the missions he conducted in the Amazon. Thereafter she will focus on reading the official reports Cruz contributed to write, comparing them with the texts produced by the Brazilian writer Euclides da Cunha, who was in the Amazon at the same period and wrote the classical book about the region, The Amazon: Land without History (1909)

Since the discovery of the Amazon, the region has been represented in different ways, mainly through travelogues. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the representations of the Amazon, from the early twentieth century to the present, through the point of view of Brazilian authors, evaluating to what extent these representations incorporate or reject the point of view of these multiple travel writings. In this context, the analysis focuses on the relationship between literature, science and national identity. The purpose is to examine how these forms of discourse compete in constituting the national ethos in a crucial period of self-determination for Brazil

Since the discovery of the Amazon, the region has been represented in different ways, mainly through travelogues. Concerning the geographical borders of the Brazilian Amazon, they will only be defined in the early twentieth century. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the representations of the Amazon, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present, through the point of view of national authors. In this sense, it is important to analyze how Brazilian literature presented the relation between identity and memory, in competition with other forms of discourse.
