De Ecologische Hoofdstructuur is de kapstok waar het Nederlandse natuurbeleid aan is opgehangen. Maar de gewone burger staat mijlenver af van dit beleidsconcept. Die waardeert vooral het beleven van landschap, met relatieve rust, ruimte, stilte en donkerte. Dat de EHS dat ook biedt zou meer voor het voetlicht mogen komen, om zo het draagvlak voor natuurbeleid overeind te houde

Assessment of tonotopically organised subdivisions in human auditory cortex using volumetric and surface-based cortical alignments

Although orderly representations of sound frequency in the brain play a guiding role in the investigation of auditory processing, a rigorous statistical evaluation of cortical tonotopic maps has so far hardly been attempted. In this report, the group-level significance of local tonotopic gradients was assessed using mass-multivariate statistics. The existence of multiple fields on the superior surface of the temporal lobe in both hemispheres was shown. These fields were distinguishable on the basis of tonotopic gradient direction and may likely be identified with the human homologues of the core areas AI and R in primates. Moreover, an objective comparison was made between the usage of volumetric and surface-based registration methods. Although the surface-based method resulted in a better registration across subjects of the grey matter segment as a whole, the alignment of functional subdivisions within the cortical sheet did not appear to improve over volumetric methods. This suggests that the variable relationship between the structural and the functional characteristics of auditory cortex is a limiting factor that cannot be overcome by morphology-based registration techniques alone. Finally, to illustrate how the proposed approach may be used in clinical practice, the method was used to test for focal differences regarding the tonotopic arrangements in healthy controls and tinnitus patients. Gelderse stilte?; onderzoek naar de stiltebeleving van recreanten

Via 190 interviews met wandelaars en fietsers is antwoord gekregen op de centrale vraag hoe recreanten stilte beleven in de provincie Gelderland. De interviews zijn in en nabij drie stiltegebieden gehouden. Tijdens het interview is het geluid ter plaatse gemeten. Het blijkt dat hoe hoger het gemiddelde geluidsniveau (Laeq) is, hoe lager de waardering voor het geluid. Jongeren blijken ook kritischer te zijn ten aanzien van de geluidswaardering dan ouderen. Andere factoren spelen geen rol bij de stiltebeleving. Tot circa 40 dB(A) is de waardering goed. Een geluidsniveau dat hoger is dan 50 dB(A) krijgt een zeer lage waardering

MMP-2 and MMP-9 in normal mucosa are independently associated with outcome of colorectal cancer patients.

BackgroundUpregulation of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in various cancers has been associated with worse survival of the patients.MethodsWe assessed MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal colorectal mucosa from colorectal cancer patients in relation to the course of the disease.ResultsA high protein expression of MMP-2 as well as MMP-9 in normal mucosa was found to be correlated with worse 5-year survival. The combination of both parameters was an even stronger prognostic factor. These protein levels were found not to be related to the corresponding single nucleotide polymorphisms of MMP-2 (-1306C>T) and MMP-9 (-1562C>T). Multivariate analyses indicated that the MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal mucosa are prognostic for survival, independent of TNM classification.ConclusionMMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal mucosa are indicative of the course of disease in colorectal cancer patients

The prognostic significance of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and tumour protein levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was evaluated in 215 colorectal cancer patients. Single-nucleotide polymorphism MMP-2(-1306T) and high MMP-2 levels were significantly associated with worse survival. Extreme tumour MMP-9 levels were associated with poor prognosis but SNP MMP-9(-1562C>T) was not. Tumour MMP levels were not determined by their SNP genotypes

De ambitie van Staatsbosbeheer is om een groot deel van haar plannen voor de jeugd te realiseren in achttien groene gebieden in dichtbevolkte delen van ons land, de zogenaamde Recreatie-om-de-stad (Rods)-gebieden. Recreatie om de stad is een jong, maar veelbelovend initiatief: de ambitie voor de achttien gebieden ligt hoog: de omvang moet uitbreiden van 2.500 naar 5.000 hectare, de gebieden moeten straks vrij toegankelijk zijn, goed bereikbaar én intensief en op uiteenlopende manieren te gebruiken zijn voor verschillende doelgroepen. Drie van de achttien Rods-gebieden fungeren de komende jaren als etalagegebied. Dat zijn het Diemerbos bij Amsterdam-Zuidoost, het Gagelbos aan de noordrand van Utrecht en de aangesloten gebieden de Balij en het Bieslandse Bos tussen Zoetermeer, Nootdorp, Pijnacker en Delft. Staatsbosbeheer is met name geïnteresseerd in de kansen voor groene BSO in de etalagegebieden
