    A computer program for calculating symmetrical aerodynamic characteristics and lateral-directional stability derivatives of wing-body combinations with blowing jets

    The necessary information for using a computer program to calculate the aerodynamic characteristics under symmetrical flight conditions and the lateral-directional stability derivatives of wing-body combinations with upper-surface-blowing (USB) or over-wing-blowing (OWB) jets are described. The following new features were added to the program: (1) a fuselage of arbitrary body of revolution has been included. The effect of wing-body interference can now be investigated, and (2) all nine lateral-directional stability derivatives can be calculated. The program is written in FORTRAN language and runs on CDC Cyber 175 and Honeywell 66/60 computers

    Lasing oscillation condition and group delay control in gain-assisted plasmon-induced transparency

    A gain-assisted plasmonic waveguide with two detuned resonators is investigated in the plasmon-induced transparency window. Phase map is employed to study power transmittance and group delay for varying gain coefficients and frequency detunings of the two resonators. The gain coefficient for lasing oscillation condition is analytically shown to vary quadratically with the frequency detuning. In the amplification regime below the lasing threshold, the spectrum implies not only large group delay, but also high transmittance and narrow linewidth. This is in contrast to those in the loss-compensation regime and the passive case in which there always exists a trade-off between the linewidth and the peak transmittance.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Influence of surface passivation on ultrafast carrier dynamics and terahertz radiation generation in GaAs

    The carrier dynamics of photoexcited electrons in the vicinity of the surface of (NH4)2S-passivated GaAs were studied via terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy and optical-pump THz-probe spectroscopy. THz emission spectroscopy measurements, coupled with Monte Carlo simulations of THz emission, revealed that the surface electric field of GaAs reverses after passivation. The conductivity of photoexcited electrons was determined via optical-pump THz-probe spectroscopy, and was found to double after passivation. These experiments demonstrate that passivation significantly reduces the surface state density and surface recombination velocity of GaAs. Finally, we have demonstrated that passivation leads to an enhancement in the power radiated by photoconductive switch THz emitters, thereby showing the important influence of surface chemistry on the performance of ultrafast THz photonic devices.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Applied Physics Letter

    Quantum dense coding in multiparticle entangled states via local measurements

    In this paper, we study quantum dense coding between two arbitrarily fixed particles in a (N+2)-particle maximally-entangled states through introducing an auxiliary qubit and carrying out local measurements. It is shown that the transmitted classical information amount through such an entangled quantum channel usually is less than two classical bits. However, the information amount may reach two classical bits of information, and the classical information capacity is independent of the number of the entangled particles in the initial entangled state under certain conditions. The results offer deeper insights to quantum dense coding via quantum channels of multi-particle entangled states.Comment: 3 pages, no figur

    Price transmission at the micro-level: what accounts for the heterogeneity?

    We use high-frequency scanner data to estimate product-specific price transmission elasticities across product types, between national brands and private labels and across retail chains in the UK. The results provide new insights into the determinants of price transmission including the role of vertical control in the retail chain, the elasticity of retail mark-ups and retailer market power. Using data on 106 orange juice products over 130 weeks for 7 UK retail chains, we highlight significant variation in price transmission by chain and that the characteristics of pricing behaviour and differences in vertical control across are important determinants of price transmission

    A comparison of ground-based and space flight data: Atomic oxygen reactions with boron nitride and silicon nitride

    The effects of atomic oxygen on boron nitride (BN) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) have been studied in low Earth orbit (LEO) flight experiments and in a ground-based simulation facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Both the in-flight and ground-based experiments employed the materials coated over thin (approx 250 Angstrom) silver films whose electrical resistance was measured in situ to detect penetration of atomic oxygen through the BN and Si3N4 materials. In the presence of atomic oxygen, silver oxidizes to form silver oxide, which has a much higher electrical resistance than pure silver. Permeation of atomic oxygen through BN, as indicated by an increase in the electrical resistance of the silver underneath, was observed in both the in-flight and ground-based experiments. In contrast, no permeation of atomic oxygen through Si3N4 was observed in either the in-flight or ground-based experiments. The ground-based results show good qualitative correlation with the LEO flight results, thus validating the simulation fidelity of the ground-based facility in terms of reproducing LEO flight results

    The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in China: A comprehensive meta-analysis

    There are conflicting prevalence estimates of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in mainland China (China thereafter). This study is a comprehensive meta-analysis of the pooled prevalence of ASDs in the general population in China. Study investigators independently conducted a systematic literature search of the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese biomedical literature service system, and Wan Fang. Studies reporting prevalence of ASDs and autism in Chinese population were identified and analysed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis program with the random effects model. Forty-four studies were included in the meta-analysis comprising 2,337,321 subjects of whom 46.66 % were females. The mean age of subjects ranged from 1.6 to 8 years. Based on diagnostic criteria the pooled prevalence of ASDs was 39.23 per 10,000 (95% CI: 28.44-50.03 per 10,000, I2=89.2%); specifically, the prevalence of autism was 10.18 per 10,000 (95% CI: 8.46-11.89 per 10,000, I2=92.5%). Subgroup analyses revealed significant difference in the prevalence of ASDs between genders (72.77 per 10,000 in males vs. 16.45 per 10,000 in females). In conclusion, the prevalence of ASDs and autism in China was found generally lower than those reported in other countries. Further studies are needed to clarify the variation in prevalence

    Automatic first-arrival picking method based on an image connectivity algorithm and multiple time windows

    The use of a computer to automatically pick the first-arrival of a seismic signal is an operation that involves picking and screening the first arrival of the wave according to the criteria established in the manual picking process. To increase the picking accuracy for data with low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we propose a new single-trace boundary detection algorithm. This algorithm includes three steps: (1) calculate the first-arrival characteristic values through multi time windows; (2) take the times corresponding to the maximum characteristic values given by different time windows as intermediate results; (3) compare the intermediate results: if the difference is too large, it is marked the time is abnormal, otherwise the average time of the intermediate results is taken as the first-arrival time. Using this energy boundary detection method, the characteristic values obtained are bi-directionally expanded to allow the use of the trace connectivity algorithm which is improved from the region growing method. Determining the connectivity between the first-arrival characteristic values is a way to simulate how the human eye discriminates true first arrivals. This method significantly improves the elimination of false or abnormal first-arrivals. Next, a small-step fitting algorithm is applied to the remaining first-arrival characteristic values to complete the calculation of the final characteristic values. Based on the retained first-arrival characteristic values, the missing values are assigned by interpolation. The characteristic values are mapped on the original record and finally the first-arrival picking is completed using a small time window. Theoretical results as well as the results obtained from real data demonstrate that the proposed automatic first-arrival picking method effectively improves the accuracy of the first-arrival picking. Finally, the new picking algorithm is presented more efficient than the energy ratio method, as well as cross-correlation method
