An Annotated Bibliography of Analytical Methods for Alkali Metals
A total of 107 abstracts is presented on analytical methods for alkali metals, as a part of a program for the evaluation of the performance of the primary cold trap from the Enrico Fermi Reactor. The abstracts are arranged into sections dealing with general aspects; sampling and dissolution techniques; and determination of uncombined alkali metal, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other impurities. Bunch Trains for LEP
Since 1995 LEP has been operated with a bunch train scheme which allows head-on collisions of four trains of up to four bunches within a train. The proposal and its implementation are presented, and the consequences for the beam dynamics are discussed in detail. In particular the side effects due to the separation scheme itself and the parasitic beam-beam encounters are computed. The necessity of a self consistent treatment is shown and emphasis is placed on a comparison between the expectations and the observations
Experience with Bunch Train in LEP
Since 1995 LEP is operated with the new bunch train scheme. This scheme allows head-on collisions of four trains of up to four bunches within a train. The first experience with this new scheme and the problems encountered during the commissioning and the operation are reviewed and discussed. The performance of LEP and the results from dedicated experiments are shown and compared with expectations. The modifications and improvements to allow a successful operation at LEP2 energies are discussed and the performance at energies above 80 GeV is presented
A New Framework for Understanding Memories and Preference for Music
What can musical memories tell us about preference, and what can musical preferences tell us about memory? In this article we contrast the two perspectives using a dialogic conversation, drawing on insights brought into relief at the recent Music and Lifetime Memories conference. We use dialogue to present two different bodies of relevant background literature and theory and consider their overlaps, interactions, and contradictions in depth. We then compare our two different approaches to the same dataset – the Desert Island Discs archive – which provide complementary perspectives and insights. We interpret each other’s analyses from our own perspectives, and finally conclude with reflections on future directions for the field
Experience with the LHC beam dump post-operational checks system
After each beam dump in the LHC automatic post-operational checks are made to guarantee that the last beam dump has been executed correctly and that the system can be declared to be ‘as good as new’ before the next injection is allowed. The analysis scope comprises the kicker waveforms, redundancy in kicker generator signal paths and different beam instrumentation measurements. This paper describes the implementation and the operational experience of the internal and external post-operational checks of the LHC beam dumping system during the commissioning of the LHC without beam and during the first days of beam operation
Playlists and time perspective
Research on playlists has focused on how usage is related to technological and music industry variables, and the demographic characteristics of users. However, it also seems reasonable to suspect a psychological component to playlist usage. The present research considered an individual’s propensity to devise and make use of playlists in terms of time perspective. Significant results indicate an emphasis on the time at hand while listening, so that playlist use has a present-orientated time perspective, rather than a future-oriented time perspective. The findings support other recent research illustrating that exercising control over everyday listening is an important aspect of musical behavior in present-day music listening
Design of a high power production target for the Beam Dump Facility at CERN
The Beam Dump Facility (BDF) project is a proposed general-purpose facility
at CERN, dedicated to beam dump and fixed target experiments. In its initial
phase, the facility is foreseen to be exploited by the Search for Hidden
Particles (SHiP) experiment. Physics requirements call for a pulsed 400 GeV/c
proton beam as well as the highest possible number of protons on target (POT)
each year of operation, in order to search for feebly interacting particles.
The target/dump assembly lies at the heart of the facility, with the aim of
safely absorbing the full high intensity Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) beam,
while maximizing the production of charmed and beauty mesons. High-Z materials
are required for the target/dump, in order to have the shortest possible
absorber and reduce muon background for the downstream experiment. The high
average power deposited on target (305 kW) creates a challenge for heat
removal. During the BDF facility Comprehensive Design Study (CDS), launched by
CERN in 2016, extensive studies have been carried out in order to define and
assess the target assembly design. These studies are described in the present
contribution, which details the proposed design of the BDF production target,
as well as the material selection process and the optimization of the target
configuration and beam dilution. One of the specific challenges and novelty of
this work is the need to consider new target materials, such as a molybdenum
alloy (TZM) as core absorbing material and Ta2.5W as cladding.
Thermo-structural and fluid dynamics calculations have been performed to
evaluate the reliability of the target and its cooling system under beam
operation. In the framework of the target comprehensive design, a preliminary
mechanical design of the full target assembly has also been carried out,
assessing the feasibility of the whole target system.Comment: 17 pages, 18 figure
