    Changing between virtual reality and real-world adversely affects memory recall accuracy

    Context-dependency effects on memory exist, whereby people’s context influences their ability to accurately recall items from memory. This effect was not previously studied when considering virtual reality as an environmental context. We show that adverse effects on recall of memorized items exist when changing between virtual and real environments. The effect was not present when memorizing and recall were both done in VR; it appears to be caused by the change of environmental context. This previously unknown effect may impact how we use VR for memorization tasks, particularly when accurate recall of memorized information in a real environment is important. In a memory-recall experiment (n = 51) participants that underwent a context change involving VR after memorizing performed significantly worse on 24-h later item recall than those who did not change context (17% lower accuracy, p p = 0.001).Computer Systems, Imagery and Medi

    Microbial content generation for natural terrains in computer games

    Procedural content generation (PCG) has been applied since several decades to fulfill various game-related design needs. Besides bio-inspired methods, living (non-human) organisms were used in computer games for various purposes, such as behavior generation, data gathering, and player education. No living organisms were used for the generation of virtual terrains in games. Such an approach to terrain generation could benefit from morphological similarity between natural terrains and colonies of microbial organisms, real-time development of terrains over time, and educational opportunities. We successfully executed an experiment in which we used growing bacterial and fungal cultures for generating naturally appearing virtual terrains in real-time.     Trust me on this one: conforming to conversational assistants

    Conversational artificial agents and artificially intelligent (AI) voice assistants are becoming increasingly popular. Digital virtual assistants such as Siri, or conversational devices such as Amazon Echo or Google Home are permeating everyday life, and are designed to be more and more humanlike in their speech. This study investigates the effect this can have on one’s conformity with an AI assistant. In the 1950s, Solomon Asch’s already demonstrated the power and danger of conformity amongst people. In these classical experiments test persons were asked to answer relatively simple questions, whilst others pretending to be participants tried to convince the test person to give wrong answers. These studies were later replicated with embodied robots, but these physical robots are still rare. In light of our increasing reliance on AI assistants, this study investigates to what extent an individual will conform to a disembodied virtual assistant. We also investigate if there is a difference between a group that interacts with an assistant that communicates through text, one that has a robotic voice and one that has a humanlike voice. The assistant attempts to subtly influence participants’ final responses in a general knowledge quiz, and we measure how often participants change their answer after having been given advice.     Exploring AI and islam in Indonesian education: an anthropological inquiry

    Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim nation, finds itself at a pivotal juncture in the realm of technological advancement. Recognizing the profound impact of emerging technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), on its trajectory is of utmost importance. While AI and Islamic beliefs may initially seem distinct, they share a common theme: an orientation toward envisioning future possibilities. Employing a blend of multimodal and mixed research methods, our objective is to scrutinize and draw comparisons between narratives and visual representations of AI's influence on religious prospects, particularly within the higher education landscape of Indonesia. We propose to investigate the curriculum, teaching practices and careers of young AI-professionals at Indonesia's oldest secular state university, namely Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), as well as Indonesia's first Islamic state university, namely Universitas Islamic Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta (UIN-JKT). Notably, both institutions have recently introduced AI programs, making them rare in this regard. In this STEM-focused context, shedding light on the societal implications of AI education within Islam takes on heightened significance, with a focus on challenging Western-centric perspectives and contributing to a decolonization-centered research narrative.     "Disciples of the Heinous Path: Exploring Label Structure in Heavy Metal Genres"

    Heavy Metal is a popular sub culture, and in itself is highly tribalized, which makes it an interesting domain to research how cultures and sub cultures relate and evolve. To study this, we scrape the Encyclopaedia Metallum heavy metal music archive website to generate a large scale networked data set. Bands are linked through shared musicians, and each band can be labelled with multiple user contributed genres. By applying Word2Vec on genre co-occurences, and hierarchical network clustering on the band collaboration graph, we gain insight into how music genres relate to each other. While the Word2Vec results show some interesting patterns with regards to the observed clusters, the hierarchical clustering proves to be more inconclusive, partially caused by factors beyond genre that generate the network.     Microbial Transformations of Nitrogen, Sulfur, and Iron Dictate Vegetation Composition in Wetlands: A Review

    The majority of studies on rhizospheric interactions focus on pathogens, mycorrhizal symbiosis, or carbon transformations. Although the biogeochemical transformations of N, S, and Fe have profound effects on vegetation, these effects have received far less attention. This review, meant for microbiologists, biogeochemists, and plant scientists includes a call for interdisciplinary research by providing a number of challenging topics for future ecosystem research. Firstly, all three elements are plant nutrients, and microbial activity significantly changes their availability. Secondly, microbial oxidation with oxygen supplied by radial oxygen loss from roots in wetlands causes acidification, while reduction using alternative electron acceptors leads to generation of alkalinity, affecting pH in the rhizosphere, and hence plant composition. Thirdly, reduced species of all three elements may become phytotoxic. In addition, Fe cycling is tightly linked to that of S and P. As water level fluctuations are very common in wetlands, rapid changes in the availability of oxygen and alternative terminal electron acceptors will result in strong changes in the prevalent microbial redox reactions, with significant effects on plant growth. Depending on geological and hydrological settings, these interacting microbial transformations change the conditions and resource availability for plants, which are both strong drivers of vegetation development and composition by changing relative competitive strengths. Conversely, microbial composition is strongly driven by vegetation composition. Therefore, the combination of microbiological and plant ecological knowledge is essential to understand the biogeochemical and biological key factors driving heterogeneity and total (i.e., microorganisms and vegetation) community composition at different spatial and temporal scales

    Investigating the composition and recruitment of the mycobacterial ImuA'-ImuB-DnaE2 mutasome

    A DNA damage-inducible mutagenic gene cassette has been implicated in the emergence of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis during anti-tuberculosis (TB) chemotherapy. However, the molecular composition and operation of the encoded 'mycobacterial mutasome' - minimally comprising DnaE2 polymerase and ImuA ' and ImuB accessory proteins - remain elusive. Following exposure of mycobacteria to DNA damaging agents, we observe that DnaE2 and ImuB co-localize with the DNA polymerase III beta subunit (beta clamp) in distinct intracellular foci. Notably, genetic inactivation of the mutasome in an imuB(AAAAGG) mutant containing a disrupted beta clamp-binding motif abolishes ImuB-beta clamp focus formation, a phenotype recapitulated pharmacologically by treating bacilli with griselimycin and in biochemical assays in which this beta clamp-binding antibiotic collapses pre-formed ImuB-beta clamp complexes. These observations establish the essentiality of the ImuB-beta clamp interaction for mutagenic DNA repair in mycobacteria, identifying the mutasome as target for adjunctive therapeutics designed to protect anti-TB drugs against emerging resistance.Microscopic imaging and technolog
