    Selective Laser Sintering versus Multi Jet Fusion: A Comprehensive Comparison Study Based on the Properties of Glass Beads-Reinforced Polyamide 12

    Selective laser sintering (SLS) and multi jet fusion (MJF) are the most widespreadpowder bed fusion additive manufacturing techniques for fabricating polymericparts since they offer great designflexibility, productivity, and geometricalaccuracy. However, these technologies differ in the thermal energy source usedto melt the powders as well as the innovative use of printing agents featured inthe latter one to promote material consolidation and to avoid thermal bleeding atthe part contours. The use of a single powder made of glass beads-reinforcedpolyamide 12 (PA12/GB) for the fabrication of MJF and SLS samples makespossible a systematic comparison of the printed parts properties. A thoughtfulanalysis of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the samples revealsdifferences and peculiarities between the two technologies. SLS exhibits lowerporosity and higher mechanical performances when the parts are printed alongthe build plane thanks to the powerful heating ensured by the laser. In contrast,MJF samples show higher mechanical isotropy with greatflexural and tensilebehavior for vertically oriented parts. The role of glass beads in the materialbehavior is defined by their mechanical properties, meaning higher rigidity andlower strength compared to neat PA12, and fracture mechanism

    A Laboratory for the Integration of Geomatic and Geomechanical Data: The Rock Pinnacle ā€œCampanile di Val Montanaiaā€

    This work describes a procedure for building a high-quality 3D model of a rocky pinnacle in the Dolomites, Italy, using Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques. The pinnacle, known as ā€œCampanile di Val Montanaiaā€, is challenging to survey due to its high elevation and sub-vertical cliffs. The construction of the 3D model is the first step in a multi-disciplinary approach to characterize the rock mass and understand its behavior and evolution. This paper discusses the surveying operations, which involved climbing the pinnacle to collect Ground Control Points (GCPs) and using a UAV to capture aerial imagery. The photographs were processed using SfM software to generate point clouds, mesh, and texture, which were then used for rock mass discontinuity mapping. The study compares models of different qualities and point densities to determine the optimal trade-off between processing time and accuracy in terms of discontinuity mapping. The results show that higher quality models allow for more detailed mapping of discontinuities, with some drawbacks due to noise in the case of the densest solution (e.g., increase in frequency of outliers across the point cloud). These pros and cons are also discussed in relation to the computational cost necessary to build the models. The study also examines the limitations and challenges of performing discontinuity mapping in the different models, including subjectivity in interpretation. A further element of interest is the publication of a high-quality 3D georeferenced model of the ā€œCampanile di Val Montanaiaā€ to be used for several potential further applications, such as stability analyses and numerical modeling

    Optical and structural properties of sol-gel derived materials embedded in porous anodic alumina

    Structure composing a xerogel, doped with lanthanide ions (erbium, terbium and europium), embedded in porous anodic alumina (PAA) have been fabricated and their optical and electrical characterisitics have been studied. Erbium photoluminescence at 1.53 Āµm from titania xerogel/PAA was found to increase with the number of xerogel layers and erbium concnetration for the excitation wavelength 532 nm, matching the area of transparency of both titania xerogel and PAA. Visible green and red electroluminescence was observed for terbium- and europium-doped IN2O3 and SnO2 xerogels embedded in porous anodic alumina. The improvement of the electrical properties of the xerogel/PAA cell is discussed, taking into account the observed ability of conducting In2O3:Sn (ITO) nanoparticles to penetrate into the anodic alumina pores

    Green Consumers, Greenwashing and the Misperception of Environmental Quality

    In this paper we analyse a setup where consumers are heterogeneous in the perception of environmental quality. The equilibrium is verified in a setting with horizontal and vertical (green) differentiation. Profits are increasing in the misperception of quality, while, the investment in green quality decreases the more the goods are substitutes. We further consider the introduction of either an emission tax or an environmental standard. The former rises the investment in environmental quality due to the higher cost of production, whereas in equilibrium quality always improves after the introduction of the latter. We show that an optimal environmental standard is an effective regulatory instrument against greenwashing and that the efficacy of the interventions is conditioned to the damage distribution and the aggregate level of emission

    Increasing Dominance - the Role of Advertising, Pricing and Product Design

    Despite the empirical relevance of advertising strategies in concentrated markets, the economics literature is largely silent on the effect of persuasive advertising strategies on pricing, market structure and increasing (or decreasing) dominance. In a simple model of persuasive advertising and pricing with differentiated goods, we analyze the interdependencies between ex-ante asymmetries in consumer appeal, advertising and prices. Products with larger initial appeal to consumers will be advertised more heavily but priced at a higher level - that is, advertising and price discounts are strategic substitutes for products with asymmetric initial appeal. We find that the escalating effect of advertising dominates the moderating effect of pricing so that post-competition market shares are more asymmetric than pre-competition differences in consumer appeal. We further find that collusive advertising (but competitive pricing) generates the same market outcomes, and that network effects lead to even more extreme market outcomes, both directly and via the effect on advertising
