ODESWS, A Semantic Web Service Development

    Get PDF
ODE SWS is a development environment to design Semantic Web Services (SWS) at the knowledge level. ODE SWS describe the service following a problem-solving approach in which the SWS are modeled using tasks, to represent the SWS functional features, and methods, to describe the SWS internal structure. In this paper, we describe the ODE SWS architecture and the capabilities of its graphical interface, which enables users to design SWS independently of the semantic markup language used to represent them

In this paper, we describe the ODESWS graphical interface (called SWSDesinger). This interface enables users to design SWS independently of the semantic markup language in which the service will be implemented, and once the design has been export the service to an SWS implementation languag

A Framework for Design and Composition of Semantic Web Services

    Get PDF
Semantic Web Services (SWS) are Web Services (WS) whose description is semantically enhanced with markup languages (e.g., OWL-S). This semantic description will enable external agents and programs to discover, compose and invoke SWSs. However, as a previous step to the specification of SWSs in a language, it must be designed at a conceptual level to guarantee its correctness and avoid inconsistencies among its internal components. In this paper, we present a framework for design and (semi) automatic composition of SWSs at a language-independent and knowledge level. This framework is based on a stack of ontologies that (1) describe the different parts of a SWS; and (2) contain a set of axioms that are really design rules to be verified by the ontology instances. Based on these ontologies, design and composition of SWSs can be viewed as the correct instantiation of the ontologies themselves. Once these instances have been created they will be exported to SWS languages such as OWL-S

Methods of isolation and identification of pathogenic and potential pathogenic bacteria from skins and tannery effluents

Currently there is no standard protocol available within the leather industry to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria from hides, skins or tannery effluent. This study was therefore carried out to identify simple but effective methods for isolation and identification of bacterial pathogens from the effluent and skins during leather processing. Identification methods based on both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were investigated. Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as indicator bacteria to evaluate the isolation and identification methods. Decontaminated calfskins were inoculated with a pure culture of the above mentioned bacterial species followed by a pre-tanning and chromium tanning processes. Effluent samples were collected and skins were swabbed at the end of each processing stage. Bacterial identification was carried out based on the phenotypic characteristics; such as colony appearance on selective solid media, cell morphology following a standard Gram-staining and spore staining techniques, and biochemical reactions, e.g., the ability of a bacterial species to ferment particular sugars and ability to produce certain enzymes. Additionally, an identification system based on bacterial phenotypic characteristics, known as Biolog® system was applied. A pulsed-filed gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method for bacterial DNA fingerprinting was also evaluated and used for the identification of the inoculated bacteria. The methods described in the study were found to be effective for the identification of pathogenic bacteria from skins and effluent

Reconsidering the Reading Motivation of Adolescent Latinx Multilingual Learners

    Get PDF
In this article, the authors reconsider traditional concepts of reading motivation to arrive at practical teaching approaches to enhance the reading motivation, engagement, and achievement of adolescent Latinx multilingual leanrers in both traditonal and online learning environments. Focusing on the bioecological Process-Person-Context-Time Model and Expectancy-Value Theory, specific factors that influence the reading motivation of Latinx multilingual learners are discussed along with practical instructional strategies for both traditional and online/virtual classrooms. They also highlight the utility of a strengths-based pedagogy vis-a-vis the growing inequities that surround Latinx multilingual leaners. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for reading motivation practice

On the survivability and detectability of terrestrial meteorites on the moon

Materials blasted into space from the surface of early Earth may preserve a unique record of our planet's early surface environment. Armstrong et al. (2002) pointed out that such materials, in the form of terrestrial meteorites, may exist on the Moon and be of considerable astrobiological interest if biomarkers from early Earth are preserved within them. Here, we report results obtained via the AUTODYN hydrocode to calculate the peak pressures within terrestrial meteorites on the lunar surface to assess their likelihood of surviving the impact. Our results confirm the order-of-magnitude estimates of Armstrong et al. (2002) that substantial survivability is to be expected, especially in the case of relatively low velocity (ca. 2.5 km/s) or oblique (≤45°) impacts, or both. We outline possible mechanisms for locating such materials on the Moon and conclude that searching for them would be a scientifically valuable activity for future lunar exploration

A Study on the Precursors for Gastronomic Satisfaction of Tourists in Malaysia

    Get PDF
This paper aims to contextualize the idea of food tourism, not only as an attention-grabbing field of research, but in the contention that it can be utilized as a wider theoretical lens to propose a system for rationally identifying preferences of food / gastronomy / culinary tourists. This paper will make an attempt to put forward the insights currently underpinning the latest progress towards a more culturally responsive and critically orientated tourism research. More to the point, this study will be able to facilitate the practitioners to gain insights on the factors affecting satisfaction of tourists which will in turn lead to a boost in visits by foreign tourists to Malaysia. A conceptual framework consisting of 4 independent variables and 1 dependent variable has been proposed. Since there are limited numbers of studies on Gastronomy tourism in Malaysia, there is a need to study this significant topic
