Solitary Mandibular Lesion as the Presenting Sign of Multiple Myeloma: A Rare Case Report

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare hematological malignancy caused by monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells in the marrow of various bones. It is more common in men in the sixth and seventh decade of life. Patients usually present with bone pain, fatigue, recurrent infections, renal failure and nervous system dysfunction. Rarely, oral lesions may be the initial sign of multiple myeloma presenting with pain, jaw swelling, tooth mobility, multiple punched out radiolucencies and parasthesia. A case of multiple myeloma occurring in a 71 year old male patient who presented with a solitary lesion in the mandible is presented here. This paper highlights the importance of knowing oral manifestations of multiple myeloma and interdisciplinary approach required for early diagnosis

Analysis of in vitro and in vivo sensitivity of oral cancer cells to methotrexate

Aim: The present study was directed on the assessment of the response of treatment-naive oral cancer cells to methotrexate (MTX) in vitro and clinical response to MTX therapy. Methods: A pilot study of in vitro evaluation of MTX response of oral cancer cells from 10 patients was conducted using a cell viability assay to determine the sensitivity/resistance to MTX. Quantitative in vitro data were correlated to the clinical outcome to MTX therapy. Results: A positive correlation was observed between the effect of MTX on tumor cells in vitro and clinical response for 7 out of 10 patients. Conclusions: Observations from the proof-of-principle pilot study suggests that oral cancer cells have intrinsically variable response toMTX. Confirmation ofthese findings with a larger cohort of patients could aid in the development of individualized therapies for this class of malignancy

    Observing Dynamos in Cool Stars

    No full text
The main aim of this paper is to introduce the most important observables that help us to investigate stellar dynamos and compare those to the modeling results. We give an overview of the available observational methods and data processing techniques that are suitable for such purposes, with touching upon examples of inadequate interpretations as well. Stellar observations are compared to the solar data in such a way, which ensures that the measurements are comparable in dimension, wavelength, and timescale. A brief outlook is given to the future plans and possibilities. A thorough review of this topic was published nearly a decade ago (Berdyugina 2005), now we focus on the experience that have been gathered since that time.Comment: 47 pages, accepted for publication in Space Science Review
